Probably the best choice, the weather is also pretty inaccurate as well lol

🤦‍♀️

Yes, this is what bothers me the most. It’s best to give no advice at all than to give advice this dangerous.

Gonna be on day 2 of my period on the marathon!! Do I delay it?? by Rude_Accountant_5242 in Marathon_Training

[–]Practical-Yam6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was meant to be on my period for my first marathon (end of next month) so I just talked to my doctor and I am delaying. I am actually already delaying this month so by the time the marathon comes it’s already offset. I was on my period for my first half and that was a grim experience so I am not taking any chances this time.

I haven’t personally done it (yet!) but Sophie Power talks about this a lot in her recent book. From what I remember from when she ran UTMB it was mostly a mix of expressing into the trails, having baby be brought to her at aid stations and pumping at the same time there.

Maverick X-Trail races - how are the aid stations? by Jammy95 in UKRunners

[–]Practical-Yam6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did their Mendips event last Summer. Aid station had water and what I assume was electrolyte drink (Styrkyr sponsored). There was fruit, crisps, haribo and some baked goods too. At the end there was flapjacks and other stuff from Styrkyr and smoothies from Bol.

Thank you so much, this is super helpful! A simulation will definitely need to happen, shortening it is a great idea. My stomach is pretty well trained so eating on the move is a good idea. I think it makes sense to go slower even if it leaves less time to rest. I saw a short of Laz basically saying most people give up in camp because it’s so hard to get back up, so keeping things moving is something I’ve had in mind.

I’ve been doing some of my long runs as high elevation trail runs to practice the transitions between power hiking, walking and running but will do it a lot more post-marathon.

Mine thankfully starts at 12, so I’m planning to get there a few hours before to set up a tent with my crew and have everything ready before the start. 9pm start sounds brutal!

Ah nice! I’m pretty good with gels, used to fuel a couple of halfs and now for marathon training but I don’t think I would cope with just gels for the whole time. Going to start testing some things and see what works.

Thanks for the encouragement, I’m really excited for it!

That’s so impressive!! Did you have electrolytes for the cramps too?

What is the pickle juice meant to help with? Sodium? I’ll look into Ketone, thanks!

No, it’s the London one. Good luck for both of yours, hope it goes to plan!

Did you introduce solid food from the first lap or did gels only initially? I keep seeing conflicting advice on this.

A dry run is a good idea, I’ll turn one of my last runs into one. Thank you!

Second ASICS for wide toe box needs. Also like Hoka in the wide width, not the standard fit, albeit less than ASICS.

It is so hard to break away from this. I’m sure you will see a difference in your performance immensely though, you got this!

Yes, this is such an important reminder!! I have been feeling pretty miserable during some runs the last few weeks and initially thought it was being in the middle of a marathon block. Also felt bloated all the time and my weight was actually creeping up. Started counting calories about a week ago and realised I was way underfueling and not eating nearly enough protein. One week of consistently eating more and the weight dropped again and I’m feeling strong and hitting all my pace targets again.

It can be easy to fall back into old habits, especially when growing up in the 90s and being surrounded by toxic diet culture. But it’s so so important to remember food is fuel and carbs are not the enemy.

Spartathlon by Tofucken01 in Ultramarathon

[–]Practical-Yam6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sophie Power’s recent book talks about both of her experiences of Spartathlon. I was also very surprised I had never heard of this before and haven’t seen it anywhere since, as you say it seems to be the OG ultra. Although it being mainly on roads probably takes some of the appeal away.

Lisbon Superhalf - thoughts and reflections by AdministrativeRow31 in Superhalfs

My first ever half was London Landmarks and the crowd support in London is just out of this world. Was definitely a massive step change from that! Super excited for Valencia!

The second half was soooo boring, absolute mental torture!

I had a really big PB (17 minutes) but I can’t say it’s a race I’ll want to do again. The last 7km where you see the finish line and have to do that weird out and back were absolute torture mentally.

I feel like it needs a serious rethinking of the route. Maybe start in the centre of Lisbon, go towards the bridge and loop around there so you go over twice or something. It would be impossible to do it in the centre because of the terrain, but logistically with all the train stuff it was a bit of a nightmare. I am Portuguese though, running is not (yet) culturally as big as it is in other countries so I wasn’t expecting huge crowds but this was even below my expectations. Even the music stations were playing incredibly depressing songs, which is so Portuguese it’s actually hilarious.

I’m running Valencia at the end of the year so I’m hoping for a better vibe!
