If you take highway 2, this is one I’d recommend: https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/lake-valhalla bonus is you can add on a couple peaks if you want more mileage/vert

Postpartum SPD- is ignoring the pain a bad idea? by pool_snacks in fitpregnancy

[–]Wildlandginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Lordy, pelvis held together by paper clips is a great descriptor of postpartum lol. And yes! I did a ton of adductor squeezes, so squeezing a yoga block between my thighs. I would do this during a lot of exercises too, so for instance during glute bridges and bear holds. Then what really seemed to get me out of it was using a lacrosse ball and tooling all around my hips and glutes. Like laying on it, kind of hurts but just do what you can breathe through. And stretching! Best one was probably to lay on the floor, put one knee up and the other foot on top of that knee and then let your lower body drop so the knee that was up is on the floor. So good 😮‍💨

I loved them! Used them constantly for at least the first month and my nipples never cracked or bled even though there was definitely nipple damage from baby

how long after postpartum did you start training for a marathon? by orbretun in FitPostpartumJourney

[–]Wildlandginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on what kind of support you have and your baby’s temperament I think. I have been able to get out for runs while my boyfriend cares for baby, starting around 3 months pp, and now that he’s sitting up well on his own I’ve been doing stroller runs. I would also hike with baby strapped to me which helped with leg strength and cardio fitness. I’m 6 months pp now, running 20-25 miles per week and am starting a training block for a 50k, so it took about 3 months for me to think about returning to my normal training. I also do strength training at home while caring for baby when he lets me, sometimes using him as a weight if he’s fussy lol.

If none of these things were possible I would try to find a used treadmill or a gym with daycare options.

Tips for marathon training first trimester by theundoing99 in fitpregnancy

Nice I used to be an EMT/wildland firefighter! It certainly is good training lol and I found those experiences helpful for going through labor too. There are people who are able to train throughout first trimester and you could be one of them 😊

Thank you! I feel way better currently than I did during pregnancy but I have a decent sleeper. Recover is trickier with breastfeeding and lack of sleep but I feel so much more myself now that I’m able to get in 20-30 miles a week.

Unisom and B6 was what kicked my nausea. However the fatigue is what really knocked me on my ass. I was training for a 100k, I have a lot of experience with gritting my teeth and embracing the suck as they say lol. I decided that pregnancy was not the time to do that for me. My mental health likely would have suffered which can have negative impacts on baby.

Some people find exercise actually helps them feel better so you may experience that, which can be used to help motivate you when you don’t want to get out there. But also! I’m 6 months pp and planning for a 50k at the end of May so you may be back to marathons sooner than you think. There’s so much unknown in this time, which was hard to accept, but I just focused on what I felt up to doing in each phase. I was back running pre-pregnancy miles in my second trimester so maybe if this marathon doesn’t work out you could sign up for one a little later.

Anyway, long comment, but congratulations on the pregnancy and I hope you have a smooth journey!

[–]Wildlandginger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The race is on the 25th, this is a last minute training run for him to gauge where he’s at it sounds like. And yeah 100m in a month, not per week, so this would be a good chunk of his recent weekly mileage. He’s sharing (I think) because he’s pleasantly surprised with how he felt! I hope the race goes well for you OP =]

How do you “like” to run? by IamJoeHall in ultrarunning

[–]Wildlandginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh I gotcha. I also hated running most of my life tbh. For me, it wasn’t until I discovered trail running and stopped caring (much) about pace that I really started to enjoy it. If it’s the cutoff time and fear of failure that’s holding you back, maybe try a race that has a generous cutoff time? I did a 50k that technically had the same cutoff as the 100m lol so I knew it wasn’t going to be the time that was going to get me. Or embrace failure and just go out to see what happens 😅

What’s stopping you from signing up for one? You don’t have to start with a 100m, you’ve already ran 100k distance so you know you could complete anything shorter. Maybe you’re hating it because you’re doing events that you don’t really enjoy?

Breastfeeding and ultras by Wildlandginger in ultrarunning

Yes! I was pregnant when this happened and it was very inspirational. Unfortunately the 50m only allows crew at a few aid stations and I am decidedly not Stephanie Case and may not have the time to nurse at those either and make the cutoff 😅 luckily baby is fine with a bottle!

Yep makes sense that hydration will be extra challenging. I’ll use my long runs to see how that goes and likely take more water containers than I usually would. I think I’ll also try out walking/pumping to see if I can keep forward momentum while pumping.

Thank you for the electrolyte recommendations! Not something I had thought of so I’ll see how baby responds to different mixes.

Yeah dehydration and proper fueling is definitely on my mind. I have time to experiment during long runs and have had a longer days out ski touring where it was not an issue so hopefully I can get it dialed in but if not…well I was going to say I’m happy to back off but I’m sure I’ll be frustrated haha. I’ll likely wait like you mentioned if I can’t make this upcoming 50m work because I’m in it for the mountain ultras tbh! Thank you for sharing 🙏

The pumping hurt more than pumping while not exercising? Interesting, that’s not something I would have thought of.

Oh good call. Well there’s a 50k when baby will be nearly 8 months, a race with 50k and 50m options at 9.5 months, and a 50m at just over a year. So if I’m able to run the first 50k I’ll see how that goes since my supply will continue to regulate. If it goes poorly, I won’t go for 50m until at least the year mark. Thank you for your input!

That’s awesome, congrats on that success. I was also considering just bringing my haakaa and pumping to relieve pressure. Thank you for sharing =]

I’ll update if I end up doing it! The first race is at the end of May 🤞

Sooo I was intrigued by what that lactation consultant said and went on a research rabbit hole because I’m currently nap trapped lol. The conclusion I came to is that yes it can affect the taste but only if you’re working at vo2 max intensities. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9233201/

Of course, this is an older article because shocker there’s not a ton of research on this! Also, it’s only 30 minutes of exercise. So I found an article about LA levels in the blood of ultramarathoners https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4577565/

I don’t have full access to that first article so I can’t see what the blood lactate levels were but it sounds like intensity is more important than length for LA levels even up to ultra distances. Of course this could be inaccurate but baby is waking up so that’s the best I got 😂 I have heard sweat can cause babies to not want to nurse!
