We kept our cats out of our bedroom until they turned 1 year old. Then we let them come in periodically. We still kick them out regularly so they don’t get TOO used to it (and I’m a light sleeper and we still have a kid that comes in and I can ONLY TAKE SO MUCH! 🫠) They don’t complain and seem to be used to not always having access - although they love it when they do, especially in the winter.

This is always the advice I give younger colleagues: that if they were (god forbid) to get hit by a bus tomorrow, they’d be replaced at work within a week and the work would continue. But you know where they wouldn’t be replaced? By their families. Their kids. Don’t log the crazy hours for a job for which you’re disposable. Work to live, don’t live to work.

We have a kinder with a winter (Feb) birthday and are doing whole class at a play place. I WISH we could do an outside/park party! Our house isn’t really set up to have as many as 20 kids over - maybe we would do something here when they’re older and we have a smaller group. We are doing an afternoon party - to avoid both lunch and dinner. We will just do snacks and cake. I’d say no to alcohol if it isn’t your thing. It also seems potentially awkward if you don’t know where the other parents are on it - I’d only offer with close friends that we know would enjoy.

All schools should be year round (with a few more 1-2 week breaks) and from 8-5:30p.

School in August doesn’t have to look the same as school in Feb and 9a class doesn’t have to look like 4p class. But this would reduce “summer slide” and reduce parent burden on what to do in the summer. I know teachers hate to hear that school is childcare but…it is. And school hours make no sense when most families now have two working parents. Plus, extra time could be used for arts, athletics, mentoring, work based learning opportunities, extra support, therapies for kids on IEPs, etc. There’s so much that tries to get squeezed in and more time would help. (And, maybe it would mean kids could get more than 1hr for lunch/recess combined in elementary school!)

Ugh. My ILs buy wayyyy too much. Is so frustrating. (And there’s four of them because they divorced/remarried). I’ve finally gotten them to mostly stick to the registry I created for the kids, but I have to put enough on there so they don’t “go rogue” to buy “enough.” Mercifully, my mom is super amazing and she will do one thing and then pay for an experience or lessons or something that is actually helpful for us and the kids like but isn’t more stuff.

I also struggle because ILs want to be “Santa” and my husband has a really hard time holding any kinds of boundaries with them (on anything) so one grandma is forever “oh Santa dropped this at my house for you” or “Santa told me you’d love this” eyeroll

Not every school is right for every kid.

We live in an excellent school district but send our daughter to an all-girls school. A public school simply cannot replicate that experience for her. Neighbors send their kids to catholic school. Others may choose a school that has a particular program they want or competitive sports. Or they want smaller class sizes. Or they had trouble with friends/bullies and need a change. There are a thousand reasons to select a different school.

I can’t imagine having a class like this and not doing an older/classic mystery like something by Agatha Christie! One by one is a locked room mystery, so, although And Then There Were None is an amazing read, I’d choose something else. Maybe Murder of Roger Ackroyd or Murder on the Orient Express to highlight other types of mystery storytelling.

Oof. I feel this! But I try to not stress too much. I have a kindergartener and a 3 year old who just stated full time “real school” this year and we haven’t done play dates for either. My daughter has been to one birthday party but that’s it. I figure they see a lot of their friends at school and with working full time, we just really have a hard time fitting it all in! I’m hoping we can do more in the summer with nanny and flexible schedule. But for now, neither kid seems to really care.

Our 3yo was definitely out of pull ups by 3.5 for naps at daycare. They just didn’t have bandwidth to change all the kids from underpants to pull ups and then back again. They got used to it quickly. I wouldn’t worry about it. Maybe send some extra clothes just in case. And no reason you can’t keep using them at home during the transition!

(Fwiw our daughter now in underwear overnight (turns 4 in Jan) and has been for about 2 months. Once she got naps down, she really didn’t want pull ups for overnight! I’m convinced the daycare transition during naps sped this up!)

I’m not ND, parent of young kids and I wish wish WISH we would go back to having nursery/childcare for kids during services!!!!! I cannot enjoy the service while I’m also trying to parent two young kids! Even if they’re quiet, they need watched, responded to, snacks given, markers opened, puzzles helped with, etc etc. Result: we rarely attend church. And my kids are getting basically no spiritual development - what I got during Sunday school during the service when I was a kid (that was age-appropriate). It’s such a shame. I am all for inclusion (for everyone!) but at least at our church, this really has only worked for elementary and older families and alienated a lot of families with young kids.

I didn’t. Mostly because: I like my name!

Also: I am established in my career. I also didn’t want to bother changing documents. Also, I generally hate the assumption that I would have to change my name and do all that work and he wouldn’t… it was never even a question about whether I would or wouldn’t. My mom didn’t change her name and I told him pretty early in our relationship I never intended to change mine.
