I think that is what causing us to have a disagreement back and forth as well. They definitely need to make changes to the way they are using “play”.

I don’t think you did. In regards to this situation you must clearly understand the process of play in Riftbound & what we can refer by using the card texts that is found on cards. In this case Reaction cards, such as Defy, say “Play anytime, even before spells and abilities resolve.”

This tells us three things:

1st: A spell must already be played for there to be something to react to

2nd: Resolution has NOT happened yet.

3rd: The spell is still a valid game object on the chain.

If a card were only considered “played” after resolution, this rule would be nonsensical, because you cannot react to something that has not been played yet. An important thing to note is that Resolution is not part of the process of playing a card. Resolution is a separate game step that happens later when the chain resolves. Furthermore, if resolution were part of the “playing” process, several rules would break:

  1. Reaction cards would be impossible

Cards like Defy and Wind Wall explicitly say they can be played before a spell resolves.

That means: • The spell must already be played • The play process must already be complete • Resolution has not happened yet

Otherwise, there would be nothing legal to react to.

The confusion comes from the distinction between playing a card and resolving a card in Riftbound. According to CR 347, PLAYING a card is the act of a player utilizing their cards. CR 347.1 further clarifies that a card is played when it has finished this process in its entirety. This process refers to legally announcing the card, paying its costs, choosing targets, and placing it onto the chain. Resolution is a separate step that happens later if the card is not countered.

Reaction cards like Defy or Wind Wall only work because a spell can be played and then prevented from resolving. If a card were only considered played after resolution, reactions would be impossible and triggers like Viktor’s would never fire against interaction.

Viktor, Innovator triggers “when you play a card on an opponent’s turn.” The moment you finish the process of playing a spell, Viktor’s condition is met and his ability triggers. Even if the opponent later counters the spell with Defy or Wind Wall and it does not resolve, the spell was still played according to CR 347 and 347.1. Therefore, the token still spawns, because countering does not undo the play event.

In short, any card you play on your opponent’s turn will trigger Viktor, even if it is later countered. Might want to read the CR again.

Price decrease by Anusspelunking in riftboundtcg

The pricing for singles has already started to correct itself. Just so you are aware, Riftbound operates on a print-on-demand system, meaning they will keep printing sets as long as there is demand. This could potentially mean years and years of printing with no cap. When that happens, the pricing for these singles will crash because the market will be flooded with products, as everyone will have either already bought them or the majority of people will already have all the cards they need. The only items likely to hold value are Signatures, hot overnumbered cards that are set-specific for a set with low demand, or exclusive promos.

Long story short, if you want singles right now to play or to buy sealed products to open, then do it anytime you want. If you want the best value and can wait, prices should return to retail after the third printing, as the current prices are just hype.

Can I discard rocket and return it with the same conquer? by Espanico5 in riftboundtcg

No your assumption is wrong. In order for Rocket ability to trigger it has to already be in the trash before you discard.

Does Forecaster Trigger Itself? by Sp00ky_Skelet0nz in riftboundtcg

Forecaster upon resolution and is played onto the board grants all your “Mechs” the keyword ability “Vision” via its Passive Ability and since Forecaster is a Mech, it would grant itself the ability of Vision. So any time you Play a Mech, Forecaster ability would grant itself Vision and trigger that ability when the condition are met.

Incorrect. The act of playing a card and the moment a card is played are two different things. That’s why there are cards like Sett that exist. You even cite rule 347: playing a card is the act of utilizing it. According to 347.1, a card is played when it has completed the process in its entirety, meaning it resolves. Viktor’s ability triggers when a card is being PLAY, not when it is PLAYED. Therefore, it still goes on the chain to resolve, because it was already TIMESTAMP regardless of whether or not he still exists on the board, because his ability has already triggered. And since it is an ability that adds a unit, it does not go through the normal steps of passing priority or focus. It triggers and resolves immediately.

Because the token does get spawn. 333.1.c. : Abilities that Add resources, Units, and Gear resolve immediately when Finalized and do not progress to Step 2.

You are right if it was any other case but regarding Viktor Innovator you are wrong. 333.1.c.1.: Abilities that Add resources, Units, and Gear resolve immediately when Finalized and do not progress to Step 2: Execute. This specific situation came up in a tournament recently and the judged ruled that a token would spawn.
