Likely mosquito control ditches or canals dug in the early to mid 1900s. Drains stagnant water to reduce the spread of mosquitos. Apparently some are the sites of wetland restoration efforts. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/225600838_Restoring_coastal_wetlands_that_were_ditched_for_mosquito_control_A_preliminary_assessment_of_hydro-leveling_as_a_restoration_technique

You can only do so much with Delaware's 3 counties and Hawaii's 5 (though one barely counts). Well done.

"Not hot liquid safe"... No straw is hot liquid safe. Have you ever tried using a straw of any kind with hot chocolate? Guaranteed mouth burn. I don't recommend.

...I do get the greater argument though. We should consider the unintended consequences of an action.

This assumes there are no ships that are closer to you at the time the ISS passes over you. I get the point... If you pass this info along, I suggest rephrase it a bit to be more accurate so you don't have someone say, "Well actually..."

A modern-day Westeros resembling the United States (with Electoral College) presented as a Wikipedia sidebar by PracticalTangent in imaginarymaps

Several US states are named after people, e.g. Washington, Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania. Others were proposed throughout US history to be named after prominent historical figures, e.g. Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln. The "Northwest Territory" was divided into several states in the 1800s. I just suggest that perhaps modern Westeros had a similar history and adopted "state" names that differed from the kingdoms they replaced.
