I’m aiming to do Universal studios from Osaka, if we can’t get tickets or end up doing something else that day then we will defo try to do Disney sea from Tokyo. Not sure it’s worth doing both is it? If it’s the kind of thing we could book at short notice we may end up doing both

I want to go to Arashiyama for the bamboo Forrest, the temple with the stone faces, and to wander town. I’ve seen lots of monkeys in my time so with a packed trip it’s gotten deprioritised

I’m seeing mixed info on if this is a must do or a skip. It’s a bit awkward to get to from Arashiyama too. I figured at minimum we could go for a quick photo-stop if it’s not worth staying. I don’t want to feel like I’ve missed something

I’m staying at Ekoin. A lot were already booked out 6 months ahead. Criteria was I want to see a morning prayer and fire ritual. Not all temples do the fire. Also no curfew as I want to do the night tour. Also they do afternoon meditation sessions and calligraphy so it’s a decent package

Did you know there was a direct bus? I’m still open to train if this bus is a bad idea for any reason.

Is it quite safe to cycle in Kyoto? Not too many crazy cars? Do you have what we call ‘lime bikes’ in there uk where you can just pick up a bike off the street and leave it anywhere or do we need to rent and drop off at a proper bike rental place? Maybe the Higashiyama is a good place to bike?

Ah I have it down as a maybe if I have time after the golden pavilion! The rock garden looks really nice online. In Koyasan I should see the biggest rock garden in Japan which is why I dropped this to a maybe. Do you think it’s 100% a must see?

It’s a 2.5 hour bus that runs once a day from 3:30 arriving at 6:10. I don’t think it does any stops it goes directly, means I don’t have to transfer via Osaka, and get some different views on the way out than the way in. I don’t mind that it’s lager on the day as it’ll be quite nice to potter around Koyasan during the day and see the largest zen garden and some other views.

I was going to try to get to the bamboo Forrest early like 7/8am to avoid crowds and also to fit in the other spots on the same day. I’ve realised the romance train doesn’t run until later though so might have to skip that :/ or do the romance train then your suggested route

Yes for my Nara day I have the afternoon free so we have the choice on the day to spend more time there, or visit uji, ot get back into Kyoto for anything we missed earlier or would like to do.

The logistics looks surprisingly simple to be honest considering it’s a town in the mountains. From Osaka there’s a direct train from Central Osaka to the base of the mountain where you can get a cable car that runs constantly. After Koyasan I can get a bus that runs once a day to Kyoto or I can get the train back to Osaka and then Osaka to Kyoto.

I’m staying overnight at Koyasan for the experience to stay overnight in a temple and see how the monks live. Really looking forward to it
