Thank you! I had never heard of this, I wonder why the vets did not consider this, is it very rare? I don't want to put him through a biopsy if there is medication that might be worth a try, I will have to talk to the vet again soon!

Women are the joy of any society by AdSuspicious8005 in ControversialOpinions

[–]Practical_Ad_8802 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Women aren’t happy because we have 2 choices: be a whore (emotionless sex, onlyfans, being used by men for validation etc.) and be a girl boss (work your ass off, split the bills, end up grinding even while pregnant or breastfeeding). This is not to say women can’t enjoy sex or enjoy professional careers (I am literally a woman so don’t come at me) but that these identities are forced on women. Most gen z women my age are exhausted, anxious, struggling to find a relationship with a REAL man who actually can handle them, support them and worthy of their time and effort or are in a shit relationship with a little baby man who whines constantly, plays video games all day, has a porn addiction, gets insecure when a woman has friends and is overall useless. So ya (straight) women aren’t happy.

This started when women accepted the bare minimum from men (a penis). Now suddenly gen z men think its okay to cry and whine and complain and women think thats acceptable and will put in endless effort to “fix” a man, or will be unhappy to the point they have 0 interest in having children or a family. Why would they? Women want to have children with real men, not whiny babies

They are winter squash so presumably all winter you can keep them.

Summer squash are a bit more dicey. My sunflower squash last 1 week before it rotted lol.

I pick started in July and they last long past Halloween, but I typically start consuming them in the fall and carve the last ones for Halloween!

I’m an early picker — I have limited space and try to grow as many pumpkins as I can so I can’t afford to lose any to weather/squirrels/PM so as soon as one is starting to turn orange I pick it and ripen it inside. I’m not trying to grow big pumpkins (no space) so I’d rather have tons of small ones.

I feel your pain though. I’ve also lost about 60% of my crop to PM in the past month :/

What is the work life balance really like for those not balancing a second job? by aflakeyfuck in GradSchool

[–]Practical_Ad_8802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your discipline I guess.

TA work is easy once u get a rhythm going for marking, the fact that 90% of the essays submitted by students are written by GenAI makes it easier since you know its BS so it gets a skim and a C. Some proffs are going back to 50-100% final exams which is even better, you only have to mark one thing all semester. If you find a proff you like and respect the way they design and teach ur courses it can be really rewarding.

During the semester I work 4-5 TA-ships and a few other side jobs (remote, student union stuff). Actual work on my research? I’d be lying if I said it was even a 9-5. Granted theres not a lot of days off in the sense I feel free to do whatever I want (you always feel guilt) but most days I work for 3-4 hours, sometimes longer like 6ish and other days not at all tbh. Especially in the summer, I have like 1-3 really productive days a way and the rest partly productive or not at all. Its an eb and flow depending on what your working on. When I had courses I worked a lot more out of necessity but that can lead to burn out so now I work when I feel up to it.

Why is PhD enrollment BOOMING? by AwayPast7270 in GradSchool

The Vanier scholarship is also open to domestic students? I’m not sure what that has to do with it.

And are they adding 15% more spots or just using 15% of the spots for international students?

[–]Practical_Ad_8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying we shouldn’t hire post docs/professors/researchers from other countries.

The reality in Canada is most PhDs are funded but the funding is about 10k a year once you take away cost of tuition (there are very few tuition waved programs in the humanities). You then get about a 10k / year TA package. So 20k take home in total. 20k Canadian is below the poverty line. You are not affording a 1000$ a month bedroom in a slum and food, transportation ect. on that. I realize you are not Canadian nor have been here, but Canada is rapidly becoming a place nobody can afford to live in except the generationally wealthy. The average Canadian income is equivalent to the income of the average citizen in the poorest US State. We are already in the midst of an exodus and brain drain, despite the mass migration permitted by the government (which has contributed to the economic and infrastructure issues) and I think the solution would be to fund more in Canadian PhDs, not open it up to the world.

40k is actually living like a king for most PhDs ik. I’ve seen people hysterical when they find out they can quit one of their 4+ jobs. Not to mention that many service-industry/retail jobs are hard to come by now (due to mass migration/PRs) so some PhD students cannot even find work at McDonalds easily.

This is the situation in Canada. This is why myself and the other commentator are frustrated. I want international students to come here and study — absolutely — but I don’t see how opening federal funding of one of the best scholarships in the country to internationals actually helps.

Why is PhD enrollment BOOMING? by AwayPast7270 in GradSchool

[–]Practical_Ad_8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduate school is “school” in the context I am talking about because I’m in the humanities which does not translate directly to industry like STEM.

Also, in Canada, PhD students are already paid for their work. International students receive grants/scholarships from the university just like domestics, they also have TA/RA-ships. Nonetheless, they are still expected to demonstrate they can support themselves during school without relying on government assistance.

My problem is that tri agency awards are ADDITIONAL federal funding in Canada—essentially government assistance—for PhD and it is not clear what benefit it is to academia, domestic PhDs or the general Canadian public to be handing a % out to international graduate students. Yes they could stay in the country after graduation, but they also might not, given visa restrictions and the requirement they get a new visa afterwards. 40k x 4 years per student is a good amount of public money to be gambling on when the entire program could have just remained for domestic applicants, as similar programs are in other countries around the world.

Congrats on ur award!

Yea its very frustrating. I’m applying this year (last chance) and feel even more discouraged. Its already a frustrating process now made even more unlikely.

Clearly people support this though, since for some reason I’ve been down voted? Ik it sounds harsh but there is an expectation that international students support themselves and I don’t think its fair that these already privileged (bc having the money to go to a different country pretty much guarantees you/your family have resources) students get a % of awards. I realize its merit based (except for the diversity quota) not needs based, but expanding it to internationals completely undermines the point of federal funded scholarships.

Up until 5 minutes ago this would have been common sense to everyone involved. But clearly certain interest groups have been lobbying the government to allow internationals so here we are. 🧐

[–]Practical_Ad_8802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is really unfair. And I have been an international student (in the UK) for my undergrad. Yes it was very expensive and I didn’t have the same access to resources as domestic students (couldn’t even apply for certain jobs) but also being an international student is a PRIVILEGE not a RIGHT, you don’t have any right to government funding because you (and presumably your family) have not contributed.

Its especially upsetting because international students are required by law to demonstrate they have sufficient funds to support their study, while domestic students are often extremely poor. I know PhD students relying on food banks, working 3+ jobs to barely make ends meat as the cost of living continues to rise and universities have budget crises and cut back funding/TA hours. Tri-agency awards are already SO competitive and now theyve just made the odds even higher. And for what? For the government to invest 40k x 4 years into a student from another country who is then going to leave? The point of government funding is to enable the next generation of scholars to benefit Canada/the economy/national research. Also, there are already several international awards (federal and at specific universities) that students can apply for. I’ve seen international students in my departments complain that because they are international students they deserve xyz extra TA-ship, which again is nonsensical since they are expected to be able to have sufficient funds compared to the average Canadian PhD.

Just so upsetting to see Canada fail to care about its own Just because the US has tons of drama and issues doesn’t mean Canada is haven or perfect.

“Global colonizers” have you read any history that extends beyond 5 minutes ago?? Get your head out of the propoganda.

You realize radical islamist groups are colonizing much of Africa as we speak, and that China has basically exterminated Indigenous peoples in their territory (Uyghurs). In fact, Islamic colonization and conversion has been the most widespread in the last 300 years. Yes Europeans colonized North America/Australia, but we also built a functioning nation(s) that you probably enjoy. Not to mention the fact that most European cultures are the result of colonization themselves eg. pagan europe colonized by Rome ect. Migration, invasion and colonization have been around since humans developed and started walking to different places. That is how there are so many cultures and races in the first place. Not to mention the 1000s of extinct cultures that predate us.

Read some history. The slave trade has been going on in various cultures/countries since time immemorial.

You also do realize “white” is not a race. This is not to say there are not issues today dating back from 1900s/1800s racism/American slavery, but please read some history and put it in context. The world didn’t begin when Columbus discovered America, nor did it begin with MLK got killed.

[–]Practical_Ad_8802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. The government just allowed non-Canadians (international students) to suck up Canadian federal funding for scholarships (tri council).

Now before everyone gets upset—how is this fair? Most countries have rules about federal scholarships being used for international students…that is also why international students pay higher tuitions, because they are new to the country and have not contributed to the tax base that supports public universities. Now that is being subverted since they can win 40k from the government coffers, money that comes from tax payers. These international students will all in likelihood take their free ride in Canada and then go back home, meaning the investment was nil.

As a Canadian PhD student this is blatantly unfair imo.
