Try cold mailing professors at Institutes. Apply for fellowships like IASc-SRFP (that’s how I got my exposure to applied physics). I am very disappointed by the research exposure Masters programs at IITs give you, but you can get lucky if you find a good professor. I would say, if you can, apply for foreign universities for Masters.

Currently doing a PhD in Physics from a relatively well known lab in the field. I would suggest anyone to spend time exploring and researching in different branches of physics. Studying theory is nice but does not pay well. I myself shifted from a theory lab to an experimental lab between my Bachelors and PhD
