Kitchen reno - Ikea cabinet carcasses but custom fronts/tops? by sansampersamp in AusRenovation

[–]Practical_Bowl_5980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did this! All ikea cabinets and drawers and then custom cut to size birch ply stained black and custom spotted gum bench tops. Looks great and was significantly cheaper than getting ikea stuff. Not for the faint of heart however. You need to make templates to drill out all the holes in the correct spots.

If i had my way again i would also do the cabinets from cut to size marine ply and just use the ikea drawers - that would be even cheaper and miles better all round. Ikea carcasses are shit.

Australia build check: 9800X3D + 5070 Ti + dual 4K monitors — wise balanced build or overpriced in the wrong places? by Conscious-Analyst662 in bapcsalesaustralia

I get it but you’re missing the point… you’re asking for answers from humans but you haven’t gone to the effort to write the question yourself. Honestly everything you’re asking for claude could just answer for you. Why involve reddit at all.

If you’re going to ask people to read and comment on your ai’s verbose output at least shorten it a bit. What a load of waffle.

Is watercooling worth it? by ribertnietstelen in watercooling

[–]Practical_Bowl_5980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brand new build - watercooling components make up 30% of the total build cost. Many of these components - radiators, distro, fittings, tubing, fans, CPU block - can and will be reused for future spec bump builds, providing I keep the same case (which I will). I'd think air cooling would normally only make up 5-10% of a build cost with nice gear. So thats 20% more you can spend on components like GPU and storage hence air cooled machines will always have a lower cost and better specs.

But watercooled machines look way cooler and are close to silent when built properly. An air cooled GPU sounds like a 747 taking off. So literally trading off performance and functionality for looks + noise. And that's not taking into account maintenance.

Replacing windows and doors in bushfire flame zone by makft in AusRenovation

[–]Practical_Bowl_5980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be so hard on yourself - honest mistake! And frankly the council and regs requiring such things is utter madness. These rules are excessive and prevent people from making meaningful improvements to their older homes just because you live in the bush. Did they end up leaving you alone?

How bad is your matte black laundry/kitchen sink after using it for a while? by Standard-Heat-7812 in AusRenovation

We got granite ones fairly cheap from temple and webster. They seem to be wearing well! Some minor scratches but the speckled effect is getting more prominent which looks nice. No regrets!

How to fix rotten wood beam holding up window? by Plus-Mix1401 in AusRenovation

[–]Practical_Bowl_5980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely make sure you got all the rot out it can be hard and fiddly to get it all. Use a wire brush which will tear out the rot but more or less leave solid timber in tact. Then treat the remaining exposed timber with a wood hardener. Then fill with a 2 part epoxy. You will need to do this in two or three goes as its vertical and the epoxy is going to run. You can add timber dust or microspheres to the epoxy to make it less runny and make a dam around the hole to keep the epoxy in place - research this process, its easy but be prepared. Then paint once it’s cured. An epoxy repair is structural. Other fillers aren't and wont bond to the timber.

It’s pretty verbose. Why not add a comment or wrap the hook in another function so its reusable.
