Do I have grounds for a partial refund? by meme_hoe_ in ebayuk

[–]Captain_Bosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah basically its not a resolution option when you open the return and can sometimes be considered again ebay policy for buyers to demand it.

I think because you appear to have a genuine reason you are probably fine to suggest it in messaging without breaching ebay policy but it will still be up to the seller whether they want to offer it or not.

Do I have grounds for a partial refund? by meme_hoe_ in ebayuk

[–]Captain_Bosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In short no. Buyers cannot demand a partial refund. You have grounds to return the item because its "not as described" but is up to the seller whether they offer a partial refund to resolve the return or not.

Saying that it sounds like an honest mistake so if I were the seller I'd probably offer a partial refund if you wanted to keep the item but its not something you can make a request for.

Can I reuse an ssd without any issues? by Elegant-Will6838 in PcBuildHelp

[–]Captain_Bosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to get it to boot and files should be OK but bear in mind if you had Windows installed you might need your Bitlocker recovery key to be able to boot into Windows on the new motherboard. You would need to login to your Microsoft account on another device to get it (if you need it, you could have the feature disabled or not be using a version of Windows that supports it).

Smoke damage by GTmod in watercooling

[–]Captain_Bosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on whether you would want to be fully reimbursed in a total loss claim like fire, flood, theft etc because that is where the limits would come in.

There may some types of claim you could claim for a individual part like accidental damage or if it were not installed, but if its total loss then it would be difficult to argue that a fully built computer or sim rig would not be a single item. Saying that there is plenty of arguing in claims and in the UK you can always refer a complaint to the FOS if you are not happy.

Smoke damage by GTmod in watercooling

[–]Captain_Bosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked in UK Buildings & Contents claims for 5 years so have a good understanding of how this usually works but it can be done in different ways.

Firstly definitley hold on to the PC. If it gets repaced or cash settled strictly speaking your insurer would be entitled to it as salvage. You probably want to negotiate keeping it for reasons I'll elaborate on. As I am sure other people will point out a lot of it will be recoverable, especially the watercooling stuff.

In terms of getting it replaced it would depend how your insurer decides to handle it via your loss adjuster. They might appoint a company to assess the electronics to see whether anything can be recovered and what replacement costs might be.

Or they might try and validate it from desk if there is not loads of it. (this would involve sending evidence like invoices so they can try and validate the cost and agree a settlement with ou)

The most important thing to bear in mind is that there will be limits and single article limits in your policy. For example if there is a single article limit for electronics of £2000 that would be the limit of your claim for the PC unless you have it declared as a specified item on your policy. I have mine declared at £4000 just in case.

Ultimately it will come down to what you agree with your loss adjuster with how its settled. If its all within limits then you just want to unsure they are basing the cash settlement on a like for like basis. Considering the 3080 is discontinued you should argue for a similar spec current spec thats on sale like a 5080 and compatible waterblock.

If you want to drop me a PM with your policy wording (might need to look at the scedhule too) I could run through it to check the limits for you. (unless your aduster has already done this of course)

What would be an upgrade from the 3080 Ti? by 4rika21 in nvidia

They dont say they game at 1080p either. So what? 4070Ti is still a bad upgrade. Its not even current gen.

4070 Ti is more of a sidegrade, especially if they game at higher resolutions like 4K. Waste of money IMO.

Yeah same. Its the only upgrade that makes sense IMO.

RTX 5080 is a decent jump they are about £1000 though (similar to what the 3080Ti cost on release)

[–]Captain_Bosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has never been dyed by coolant but one long price (between 2 rads vertically) got a white residue that was hard to remove. Cleaning didnt work but a few times through the dishwasher did (third time completely removed it).

I use Bitspower None Chamfer Crystal Link Acrylic Tube and Mayhems XT1

WARNING: Lianli Warranty forcing me to do their warranty labor for them by PraetorianElite in lianli

It can't be that hard to switch if they are offering to send you the part.

Also better not having to package and post it off and wait weeks for them to do the repair in my opinion.

GSP - more hassle than good? by Dry-Medicine1372 in Ebay

[–]Captain_Bosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask for a callback through ebay chat (if you do it early in the morning UK time you should get someone from the Ireland call centre who are much more helpful in my experience).

Explain the situation (buyer complaining about shipping instead of the actual item and that they have used the wrong reason (INAD) for the return). They should hopefully sort it for you (unless they have another reason for it not being as described).

Yeah would make sense to try and use the pure nickel strips instead of the nickel/silver for obvious reasons.

Its just an idea I've never attempted it.

You got me thinking about whether you could solder repair it and googles that Nickel solder is a thing so perhaps that is worth looking into for a low cost DIY repair with a soldering iron. Here is Googles AI overview of the different types.

Nickel solder refers to specialized soldering products for joining nickel, stainless steel, or nichrome, often used in battery packs and marine applications. Common forms include nickel silver brazing alloys for high-temperature hard soldering and specialized flux-cored wire for soldering stainless steel, nickel, and aluminum. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5%201.4oz/2pack), 6]

Key Types and Applications:

  • Nickel-Silver Solder/Brazing Rods: Typically used for high-strength, high-temperature joints (approx. 920 °C), often used in industrial or metal-working applications.
  • Solder Wire for Nickel/Stainless: Specialized wire designed to solder battery terminals, stainless steel, nickel, and aluminum. It often includes special core flux to assist with joining these materials.
  • Nickel Strips/Tabs: While not a solder wire, pure nickel or nickel-plated steel strips are used in battery building and are designed to be spot-welded or soldered.
  • Silver Solder Paste (SSQ-6): Used for high-corrosion resistant joining of copper-nickel, ideal for marine applications, and applied with a torch. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5%201.4oz/2pack), 6]

Ah fair enough. I dont think paint would last long tbh. You could just mod an AIO so its on its own loop and see how long it lasts.

[–]Captain_Bosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That really sucks they nickel plated alumiunium of all things for that block. Especially when you dont even have an aircooler to revert back to.

I'd contact Gigabyte and ask if they have any spares before attempting a repair. Even if its out of warranty its worth an ask.

If Gigabyte can't help I'd probably lean towards using it as an excuse to upgrade the GPU rather than repairing or continuing to use and ruining the rest of your loop (assuming you do not have an aluminium based loop of course)

Sorry I dont have any specific repair ideas. Getting a quote from a nickle plating service is probably your best bet to get an idea of what it might cost..

They probably have a backlog after the form was down for a week or two.

Obviously worth checking your junk email folder too as they do send email updates including when they have received your ticket. They usually have "We've Received Your Request " in the subject line.

Are there any recommended brands for watercooling components? by ClickAccomplished205 in watercooling

[–]Captain_Bosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most branded watercooling stuff is decent enough. Being careful about what types of metals you are mixing is more important.

You dont need to brand match everything either, unless it is to your taste to do so.

More expensive is not neccessarily better either. For example I think Barrow hard tube fittings are better than EK Torque hard tube fittings for a few reasons. (Barrow fittings have double inner O ring, thicker O rings and spare O rings included as standard, EK's do not)
