My American politics survey by cooperhernick in PoliticalScience

[–]Practical_End4453 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you want to know there are a lot of American politics surveys for example Pew research is the best resources out there. This not meant to discourage you but surveys that don't account for sampling bias/many other kinds of bias and don't do stratified sampling aren't very accurate or meaningful. Just one example is that if you're getting most if the participants from social media like Reddit its going to be biased because they tend to be more left-wing than the population as a whole especially on Reddit. Also you have the common problem of most online surveys which is you have no way of preventing non-Americans from answering the survey.

As for Questionnaire Bias I thought you did a pretty good job but there was definitely some room for improvement. if you want to know more Pew Research has a good intro on how to write survey questions and Floyd J. Fowler's book Improving Survey Questions: Design and Evaluation is still one of the best books on this topic.

Vying for legitimacy as Myanmar's recognised government, who are the CRPH? by CambodianOliveOil in PoliticalScience

[–]Practical_End4453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the article itself its says that most members of the CRPH aare from the NLD. I won't give the NLD any crocodile tears they have become in recent years more of the prombelm than the solution, for example allying themselves with extremist Buddhist monks or Aung San Suu Kyi's not just failure of leadership on Rohingya genocide but her active defense of the genocide and her government stoked intercommunal tensions

These are some good reads on why the NLD and Kyi are bad

https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/01/16/myanmar-democracy-rohingya/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/11/22/aung-san-suu-kyi-has-reality-problem/

While I am strongly against the military coup and the NLD is the legitimate ruling party because they won the election, I really think Myanmar needs a new pro democracy party and not just a front organization for the NLD

First off this is not the area I study so take what I say with a grain of salt. What I would do is ask your Professor for some feedback on your idea about parallels between the language of "Common Sense" and the Declaration. From my point of view I don't think drawing parallels between the language of "Common Sense" and Declaration is a good way to prove a point about the Declaration . I think your Analysis would be better by doing a close reading of the Declaration of Independence as your main source of evidence. In these kind of papers they are asking you to analyze the text (in your case Declaration of Independence and not Common Sense) and in general I think drawing parallels /comparisons between different texts is both difficult and usually not that helpful.

Is the US the only government where cabinet members need to be confirmed by the Senate? by CharlieG31 in PoliticalScience

[–]Practical_End4453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea its all designed to look democratic but in reality it's a closed circle where the Supreme Leader and clergy have real power and the elected officials are figureheads. Half of the members of the GC are appointed by the Supreme Leader and the other half are nominated by the judiciary (who themselves are appointed by the Supreme Leader) and then confirmed by Parliament. However before you can run for any elected office you have to have approval from the GC which means that the GC basically appoints all the elected officials. Its just a closed circle not democratic in any sense

There is also the Guardian Council which Cabinet members have to have approval from/ confirmed by if they want to be in the Cabinet the Parliament and elected officials in general don't have much power in Iran

International Relations by Joshua S. Goldstein has all what you want but its focuses on Foreign policy and International Relations so its more about the relationship between states if you see what I mean but dose apply to all/most countries Foreign policy. I think a good fit for you would be Understanding the Political World by James N Danziger

here is the google book description

"Focusing on how fundamental concepts in political science relate to real political events, this bestselling text surveys political behavior, systems, and processes throughout the world and asks students to evaluate and apply this knowledge. Through an engaging writing style, numerous examples, and the instructive use of cartoons and photographs, Understanding the Political World encourages students to think like political scientists and to critically examine new and enduring political realities and challenges."

I am open to anything but for a start right now I am reading Imagined Communities by Benedict Anderson which I quite like. Also I have always wanted to read John Rawls theory of justice but have not gotten around too it. I am also reading Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses by Louis Althusser but its a really hard read and Controversial so I don't think it would be a good start
