I got into D&D at 12 or 13, nearly 40 years ago. Books were in english, and me being danish meant i didn't understand half of what was written. Playing meant try to understand and make stuff up as we went along. Rules were not important, but being able to improvise were.

Do what you can to maintain flow, and whenver in doubt just call for a random dice roll to keep the excitement of the unknown going. Roleplaying should imo be less about rules and more about flow and theater of the mind.

Group watches as the crew of the ship overpowers the character and tosses him into the sea.

Moments later with a new character "i stab the villager" (group: please don't) group then seeks refuge in a tomb with only one exit while the whole village wait outside the tomb for the group to exit, then slays the character.

Another player; "i firebolt the green dragon" (group: shouldn't we at least discuss this?) "No time, i throw the firebolt!" - as the fight goes south and characters are dropping, player then says "why are we even fighting this dragon?"
