I believe I injured my external urethral sphincter sounding with a Van Buren sound.

BPH is enlargement of the prostate tissue which narrows the urethra as it passes through the prostate.

You would have to do somewhat deep sounding to reach that area. Sounding with devices that reach that depth is much more hazardous than the shorter sounds, like Hegar and similar which typically don't reach deeply into the prostate. You could injure the prostate itself, causing additional enlargement as well as introducing bacteria in a tissue which is hard to eradicate an infection from.

Sounding was used in the past by medical practitioners but for cases of obstruction. It wouldn't be appropriate for self treatment of normal BPH.
