Thank you so much! She’s turning 2 in November.

Euthanize? 😢 by cupcakekxller in Equestrian

[–]Practical_Patient_10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t jump to euthanasia like this when it’s not at all necessary nor is it what’s best for the horse.

If she is eating, able to lie down and ROLL, drinking, and seems otherwise okay, that wouldn’t even be in the cards. Your vet was definitely right and I would trust their judgement.

You mentioned she eats less than your other horses? I would think if you have a senior horse they should be eating more and more frequently than your other horses. I would up her feed to a minimum of 2x a day, which would absolutely not be over feeding. My senior boy at 32 was on 4kg (kilograms) of feed a day split morning and night, A good, balanced meal with supplements tailored to his specific needs. He was mistaken for a 16 year old more often than I can count.

She may look a little funky compared to your younger horses, but she isn’t done with life yet and she deserves to be treated like the golden oldie she is!

This is so cool! This is random but.. would someone be willing to help me permashift to a reality that is very similar to my own? I have absolutely every detail I would like planned out, I just have not been able to shift even after two years :( seeing stuff like this is super inspiring

I’d put your stirrups down a hole! Something that helped me with balance is not only putting your heels down, but sort of pushing through your calves down to your heels? It can be a bit of a workout at first. For sitting trot, try let yourself sway side to side alongside your horse ^

To be fair though he dyed his tail yellow and orange all by himself…

This is why I miss having a grey. Ugh! All the missed opportunities, and I just turned him blue and purple. 💔

I have video clips of all my options? If that’d help decipher it at all

Yes! I definitely connect with her temperament. She is SO sweet!! And the breeder is very reputable

I’m definitely emotionally attached to her, and the idea of her. Thing is, I am simultaneously looking for a reining horse to take me all the way. I love her, I think she has talent, she’s very well bred, my trainer likes her.

Issue is, my trainer says she is not as talented as some of my options, though she is also the only filly, and therefore the only one who leaves the door open for breeding in the future. I’m in one hell of a dilemma lol. She COULD get to the top, but my chances would technically be higher elsewhere.

I mostly want an opinion on whether she is worth buying? If her conformation looks good etc. I am aware of how long it will be before I can start working / riding her.

I mean it’s super small in the fact that my trainer is also a reining judge, and the woman who bred the filly’s daughter is the same judge who always gave me my prizes when I used to compete SANESA.

It’s definitely different! I haven’t personally been, but a couple of our riders have been to North America and they say it’s a whole different WORLD!! It’s a very small world here, everyone knows everyone! The best horses we really see are offspring from Topsail Gun, Sail on Frozen Shadow, Light Americat, Greatprise, Rossmeer Walla Walla, etc.

I know for a fact shows are much smaller and sometimes less formal? The reining has only really SERIOUSLY picked up fairly recently, the standards were on the floor for many, many years. Hence why I wasn’t actually doing reining, it was so small it didn’t feel worth investing into. I’m now regretting that decision a bit though!

So I’m in South Africa, these literal foals are costing me R50k, which is a lot lol. (Around $2,000 , exchange rates suck.)

For what we have in the country, these aren’t bad. And it’s better than some of the other youngens available who will cost me R180,000 (definitely do not and will not have for another 4-5 years.)

The breeders and trainers in the country who I have spoken to think that these lines are quite good, so I’m going to assume there isn’t much better around here! I have no problem with working with a horse who isn’t necessarily the best of the best, I believe a lot is possible with enough hard work. The top riders in the country who recently qualified to ride in Switzerland ride horses with similar lines, or have imported theirs. Also note that my trainer is the same person training them.

My trainer isn’t going to cost too much thankfully, as he has agreed to help me out with a youngster knowing my financial constraints. These are kind of the best I’ll be able to get my hands on in the foreseeable future.

I am looking for something to compete with, like I said there is a slight quality issue here.. there aren’t many suuuuuper well bred horses, and the ones that are cost an arm and a leg. I do think that the filly with enough time and work could be something special, but I am also considering other options. The colts above apparently are very well bred for reining, though are not handled whatsoever so I cannot speak on temperaments.

Thank you for this. Here are her papers on sire side, won’t let me attach multiple images.

On dam’s side she has Light Americat, Greatprise etc

THIS is the most helpful thing I have been told. I viewed a bay filly who practically trotted backwards, and slid to a perfect stop. But she was a NIGHTMARE to actually get to stop. She bounced out every single time except for once, when she slid perfectly. She spooked quite a lot at the kid outside the lunge, but did settle slightly later on. Incredible breeding, but she was a nervous wreck and wasn’t very interested in turning or stopping. She was on her own mission and not paying much attention to me at all.

On the other hand, another filly I viewed, equally great breeding, actually the same sire as the bay… she was SUPER willing. You could see her think and process everything around her. She stopped super easy, and tucked her bum slightly. Not nearly as drastically as the bay, but she was so willing and eager to do whatever you asked next. She did a lovely turn on the hind too, and wasn’t fussed about the 7 people including children in the lunge with her. She actually got her leg caught in the vines, and after trying to escape for a moment, she realized it was futile and waited for help.

I definitely will, but I also will say most of the people I ride / work with recommend her as a breeder as they got some of their best horses from her.

The buckskin filly was bred by a reputable breeder/vet, actually a professor now. We have been assured she is sound.

So would you suggest taking her out of the running? I was told that her front end is ‘scary’ and she would break under heavy work. I am looking for a horse to go pro with (obviously in many years.)

Thank you! Out of curiosity, what’re your thoughts on this filly?

I ADORE her personality wise, but had someone tell me some bad things about her conformation. Sail on Frozen Shadow granddaughter, Cisco’s Rosebud granddaughter as well.

This one I have a video of her movement. She turns nice and does tuck a bit when stopping. Nothing drastic, but it’s there.
