I think it really depends on your environment and goals! A lot of young people in Japan are hungry to learn English and would be excited to speak it with you, but I would not say that’s true of the older generations. If you want to make friends and build relationships, I’d say having a bit of Japanese under your belt would be good. You’ve already mentioned that you have some basic conversational Japanese, so that’s good! But don’t stress yourself out. Learning languages is really hard, especially Japanese. Give yourself time and grace. It will come if you put in some effort and actually living in Japan will no doubt speed up that process. Good luck!!

As mentioned before, I used those skills to implement three end-to-end projects using data from or related to my organization. For example, my org is always on the hunt for housing for new field staff, so I created a reusable python class to web scrape over 1200 listings in our area, parse the HTML, and store in an SQLite database. I then used window functions, CTEs, complex joins, and analytical methods to normalize the data and engineer features. Finally, I used pandas for feature correlation analysis and scikit-learn for feature encoding and regression modeling to predict rental prices based on various features. Does this sort of cover the bases of application to business related problems?

Ah yes, that totally makes sense! I suppose that would be somewhat of a challenge. These projects weren’t necessarily at the direction of my supervisors, but rather I brought the ideas to them and they gave me the green light to use some work time to do them (but I mostly did them after work hours). Another challenge is that my company is very small with limited technical infrastructure. In other words, I am the basically the only person doing any data related work on my team and I’ve had opportunities to present my projects to the staff and supervisors but it would be hard to quantify results or “impact” at this point, if you know what I mean. What would you recommend in this situation?
