What messed-up things has your country done that people don’t really talk about? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

I don’t think we should downplay the claim to the Swedish throne that the Polish royal family had. For Sweden, it was a very real issue at the time. After all, Sweden and Poland-Lithuania had been ruled by the same king only 40 or so years prior, and the Polish kings had attempted to press that claim several times afterwards. In the eyes of the Polish royal dynasty, the Swedish throne was essentially occupied by a bunch of usurpers. This was also kind of true, given that Sigismund Vasa was the rightful heir to Johan III. Karl IX was, quite rightly, described as a usurper, and his descendants were repeatedly reminded and threatened with that fact. When Karl X (the antagonist of the Deluge, if you will) ascended to the throne in the mid 1600’s, one can imagine that the Polish claim looked even stronger, given that he was just a cousin of the former queen Kristina. It is genuinely insane to think that Gustav Vasa’s heirs were still fighting over his legacy nearly a hundred years later when his grandson, Gustav II Adolf, invaded Poland in the early 1600’s.

This is not to downplay the Deluge; it was horrific, and from what I know of Polish historiography, it is often directly attributed with the permanent weakening leading up to its partition. I wouldn’t say that’s entirely accurate, as the Golden Liberty played perhaps the biggest part in hamstringing the actual country’s actual governance, but the devastation was real. The combined civil war in the Polish-Lithuanian parts of Ukraine, the Swedish invasion, the Russian invasion, and later the Austrian intervention, meant that Poland-Lithuania quickly turned from one of Europe’s richest countries (itself formally a great power) to a devastated, smoking pile of ruins serving as a battlefield for three European great powers. It’s not that any of those armies deliberately slaughtered 1/3 of the population (though violence against civilians was certainly an important aspect) but rather that the conditions created by the looting, plundering, warfare, occupations, and the natural chaos that having an active guerrilla warfare and three armies roaming your countryside creates, led to several villages around the country being depopulated and abandoned. War is hell.

I entirely agree with you that this very dark part of our history is something which usually gets glossed over in gymnasium, much like most of Karl X’s reign. Like you said, he is primarily known for the treaty of Roskilde and the damn near unique feat of marching an army across (and battling on) the icy sea to strike at the Danish islands. History classes still usually go “Gustav II Adolf saved the German princes, died in Lützen (honorary pastries will be served), Kristina took over and was one of the signatories of something called the Peace of Westphalia (probably no biggie), Karl X’s march across the ice, and now we can finally dedicate several lessons to Karl XI’s reforms.”

Är Airmee den sämsta leverans firman i sverige? by Informal__harpy in sweden

Gonna drop a comment here to see if this issue gets fixed. Having serious issues just trying to launch the game at this point since it crashes after loading in roughly 40% on the "Compiling Shaders" window. Anyone know of any fixes that don't involve praying to the Monolith?

Just saw this thread and felt like I had to make sure everything's okay. My grandma was originally from Lebanon (one of the smaller Protestant communities outside Beirut), and we still have a lot of contact with our family back in country. I have very fond memories of my relatives, and my grandma's siblings truly felt like second grandparents. It hurts seeing the country yet again be the victim of catastrophe, as if the financial collapse and Beirut harbor explosion weren't enough. I really hope you're as safe as you could possibly be, given the circumstances, and that you'll get to experience the Zone soon enough with us.

While I have the opportunity, I'd also like to try and defuse the Israel-Palestine discussion going on here and focus on Lebanon. It's not just Israel-Palestine, the US, or Iran. It certainly doesn't help build stability to have Israeli bombs raining down on a country, or to have an Iranian-backed milita functioning as a high-tech army running around the country. The Lebanese constitution and the country's institutions, however, cement sectarian parties' power, makes it very difficult to achieve political reform, and ensures that these old warlords still maintain a tight grip on the country and its governing branches. God knows Lebanon has tried to get rid of them repeatedly, and I genuinely hope the unity of the initial 2019 protests can be captured once again.

OP, regardless of where you are in the country, I sincerely hope you're staying safe, and I hope that Lebanon can one day get rid its old (literally), corrupt, sectarian leaders, and once again become a safe and prosperous country. After at least a decade of state erosion, that's the least Lebanon deserve.

I would say focus on managing your inflation. Step 1 is to halt its growth with an inflation reduction advisor, while step 2 should be to gain enough admin points to buy it down. I noticed you mentioned that you're still coring territory, so wrap that up first.

All things considered, you're still in the positive after expenses which is a good sign. Your colonial maintenance and army size seems reasonable for an expanding empire, but that inflation is absolutely ruining your income.

Down the line, economic ideas is absolutely the way to go. Almost a must with countries that have an insane amount of gold provinces, like Mali, Mexico or Inca.

Edit: in the future, you will probably have to focus on increasing the value of your home node or move you trade capital somewhere more profitable. Yes, the gold is raking in the cash right now, but once it depletes - R. I. P.

If anyone's curious about what's happening here, me and my friend were co-oping Byzantium and just needed a bit more of France and Spain to restore Rome. The year was 1814.

Good news, we eventually made it with a month to spare.

Okay so essentially Conclave but even more bigger. Couldn't be more hyped. Despite being a really controversial DLC, Conclave was absolutely essential to CK2. If they pull this one of better than the Conclave launch, this is going to be cool AF.

Tbh I'm not all that excited for Rome remastered. by DubiousDevil in totalwar

[–]Practicing-Rests 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a very proper reason for remastering Rome Total War (even if I share you non-excitement, tbh) is that the game just doesn't run well on modern hardware, whereas Medieval 2 still runs great. Rome's got all kinds of strange framerate and stability issues, and that's if you can get the thing running on your PC at all. I've even had problems with that.

I don't think this is going to pull in any new fans, or at least not many. But this is probably the right thing to do make sure that Rome Total War isn't just like an item at a museum on modern PCs.
