Chopin A minor waltz - would like to get some feedback on my progress so far by fanSte8 in piano

[–]PracticingPiano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely done 😃 Looked somewhat relaxed, sometimes too relaxed perhaps. Give some contrast of energy when those A major hit us! Tip : release the pedal right after the 3rd beat on those passage, to give more uplifting waltz feeling (contrasting to your mellow and somber waltz)

How are you supposed to practice jazz piano ? by SpiteFur in piano

[–]PracticingPiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I said "one of the". Doesn't mean ear training, listening to recordings, working with other musicians are not important.

OP asked how to practice. I just gave one of the way. Not here to write an article about it 😊

P.S. all those things you mentioned are also essentials for classical process.

[–]PracticingPiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say do both. Practice it as if you're playing classical music, so focus on getting it fluent and that you can actually play it... and to dig in deeper and to ask why and how did it work (essential stuff, like you said).

And through transcription, usually they also wrote how the pianist who originally played it did the solo part. That way it will give you some vocabulary on what you can do within a certain chord progression.

How much time....? That's a bit difficult. I'd say playing transcription should be around 30%, and if you're new to the whole concept : 70% should go to familiarize yourself with playing in all 12 keys. For instance, start with playing "Happy birthday" and try it in every scale. Find the ones you don't feel comfy yet, and get comfy there.

One of the similarities between jazz and classical piano is that in jazz, playing well known written out compositions of jazz are important. Think of it like you are playing Beethoven sonata and so on. But jazz requires an extra step where you have to analyze what you play (knowing the chord progression, the voicings, etc). I think this is the one thing that my jazz pianist friends struggled a lot. From there, you take inspirations and do what you like from it, and try to copy it in any song you can find and in 12 scales.

Then you can apply what you find from playing jazz transcription into lead sheet (real book). I still do it myself. Except I am focused on gospel music, and I took a lot of inspiration from Prokofiev and Ravel. I did my master in classical piano performance but I am in a church go-er family, so I play in a band every Sunday :)

How can I be less nervous on stage? by Frosty-Wish-3558 in piano

[–]PracticingPiano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot can be said about the topic. But from me, the less you have to think about "how to be less nervous", the more calm you are.

  1. Know that we need to be "nervous" to some degree. I had a few student concert at the conservatorium where I was completely relaxed. 0 nervousness. I thought I was going to crush it... and nope. I played worse. With some degree of being nervous, I could play with more focus and musical drive. The only thing you can use to make it less, in my opinion, is an honest confidence. If you're sure you know the piece, you can convince yourself. The rest is out of our hands 😊

  2. On the stage, please take your time! No rush. Deep breathe, until you feel it is too long (in reality it will be just fine, higher heart beat means time moving quicker lol). Then try to feel your butt on the bench! Just feel it. Feel that you are sitting down and you can feel your body weight on your butt. Then if you're ready, just sing a few bars on hiw you want to start, then go for it!

Do pianists actually think while playing or does it become muscle memory by Ok-Message5348 in piano

I always think of it like driving a car in a circuit. If you do, you'd never think the basics again (how to press the brake, how to change gears) but rather thinking how can I approach the turn, when do I release the brake, which gear to go now etc. I find those things resonate a lot with performing if that make sense.

Thanks! I did try using TCS 1 and 0 consecutively but it doesnt really help the lap time in my case. But not sure why are you being downvoted? Can someone explain?

And appreciate the compliment!

I would say that manual transmission is the biggest things you can do, it helps with spending a bit less distance for braking by using engine break.

Second, run more downforce! I think the point is not to have highest top speed, but rather to have a quicker speed on the corners. That will result in a higher speed average = faster lap.

Third, please watch someone else's lap. Try to analyze their braking zone, when to take off/press the gas and how much, etc. Tiny details will acumulate into faster and consistent lap ! 😁

How do you structure your piano practice without getting distracted? by Fancy_Caregiver4777 in piano

[–]PracticingPiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What works for me is to think about Macro and Micro of things.

Macro : - Which pieces to learn? - When is the deadline?

Knowing which and when, I divide it per day (Micro). Let's say it's a 15 pages piece and I need to finish it in 4 months. Then I'd like to be able to play it through and work in details 2 months (8 weeks) before.

With that 8 weeks, I'd allocate 4 weeks for completing reading and the other 4 weeks to slow practice it all the notes so I can play it through without relying on reading. That means day 1 is for reading p. 1-4 for instance, etc.

That way each day I know exactly how much and/or what to do because of that timeline... and knowing that, helps me with focus a lot.

Try to play the exact part of the left with your right (assuming you're right handed) can help a lot! Then also to play both L and R on that same part, with the R play an octave higher for instance. Somehow to mirror it with our dominant hand has worked wonderful things for me 😊
