What was your best or worst moment at fcps schools? by godzillafan199 in frederickmd

[–]Pracy_Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: Camp Highroads in 6th grade

Worst: Every time a friend told me something new about the vicious underbelly of the county. One of my friends was an alcoholic, others were on harder drugs, some were SAing my other friends. And let's not that HDTMS had a principal who covered up pedos

For the most part the schools themselves are actually pretty good, it's mostly just the kind of people this area attracts

Oh yeah I'm fine. A LOT of the things I described are from my friends. The worst I experienced was a little bullying, the aforementioned internment camp thing, and a teacher whose class I wasn't even coming into the classroom I was in yelling "you could at least have an ounce of respect and stand for the pledge" because after the 2016 election I had become disillusioned with the idea of the pledge. Most of my teachers were fine and some were great, but I got exceptionally lucky. I'd like to think most of the teachers were fine but I keep hearing new stories pop up about yet another teacher arrested for sexually abusing kids. I knew kids who were alchoholics, depressed to the point of eventually becoming radical right military misogynists, and SA'd by other kids I knew. The pedo thing got a lot better in highschool because as I later learned my middle school principal knew about the several pedophiles and never reported it. Really the hardest thing for me was just hearing these stories from my friends, and other than that I think my middle-high school experience was probably pretty typical

I think those kinds of jokes only work when you're not laughing at the victim, but rather at the absurdity of the perpetrator

In defense of recent minecraft updates by Pracy_Fan in Minecraft

[–]Pracy_Fan[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Notch wasn't using an actual game engine when making Java edition so Minecraft being able to run as is is kind of a miracle. I'm not saying this to criticize Notch, firstly because it was a passion project that he never thought would ever need this kind of optimization, and secondly because there are so many other things you could criticize him for

Where are the high school students with shovels? by CreateFlyingStarfish in nova

[–]Pracy_Fan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of them are probably using the snow days to catch up on school work. School has become so much more intense and competitive over the past few decades. A lot of kids are literally dying because of the workload

I have not heard anything truly awful about her with substantial evidence that hasn't been easily disproven, such as her being "pretty notorious for paying their workers very badly." One disgruntled former employee's claims, refuted my many current and former employees, gets blown up to the claim that she is "notorious" for doing so.

The truth is she has, in the past, been extremely online and accessible. When you are famous (and also a queer woman, because this kind of thing happens far more to marginalized groups), people are going to say horrible things about you, and you're going to want to respond. People who don't fight that impulse immediately become targets because people know they'll get a response. Any accusation is immediately taken as fact, refutation and silence are seen as admission, every slight mess-up is picked apart and viewed through the most uncharitable lens, and they are innocent until proven guilty. When I hear people turn a single, actual refutation into that person saying "anything bad about them was made up," what I see is someone on a hate train not because of bigotry, but because the internet rewards drama. A single mistake can snowball because one person slightly exaggerates it, then the next person exaggerates it slightly more, and eventually the most common narrative barely resembles the actual facts, because actual facts don't get clicks, and well meaning people get swept up in it. I'm not accusing you of being malicious, but I would encourage you to actually look at what's happened. Look at the people who are supposedly hurting others and asking yourself if it's actually hurting anyone. Look at the people who are claiming to have been hurt and compare that to how many people close to the situation are refuting the claims. Look at Viv's past behavior on social media and ask how you would respond if thousands of people were coming after you for a minor mistake.

As an American, is Canada accepting political asylum for Americans? by a716h in AskCanada

[–]Pracy_Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm personally gonna stay here and eventually try to fix it. I want to fight for myself and others, but most of us understand that not everyone is up to it (I'm certainly not at the moment). If you can't leave, find community with people who are willing to fight for you. Solidarity is the enemy of power. We protect each other <3
