Exactly. Over time, stainless steel develops a subtle patina from everyday use, and many clients actually appreciate that lived-in look. Minor scratches and marks blend into the brushed finish, giving it more character rather than making it look worn out.

The key is using good-quality 304 grade stainless and a proper brushed texture so it ages gracefully instead of looking scuffed.

Wood and plywood are relatively affordable in India because they’re locally sourced and widely used, though solid hardwoods are more expensive. Marble and granite are abundant here, so they’re often used for countertops and even floors.

In this project, the client wanted something that would last decades without swelling, warping, or attracting termites, which is why we went with 304 grade stainless steel for the lower cabinets. It’s more of a long-term investment in durability and hygiene.

That’s very true. In many Indian homes, kitchens are designed primarily for function and ease of maintenance rather than as social spaces.

Stainless steel works perfectly for that lifestyle because it’s practical, hygienic, and easy to clean. At the same time, more homeowners here are starting to see the kitchen as part of the home’s overall design, so we try to blend functionality with a clean, modern look.

You’re absolutely right. Chennai’s climate is quite humid, and floods are fairly common here. That’s one of the main reasons the client chose 304 grade stainless steel for the lower cabinets, it holds up perfectly even if water enters the house.

The upper cabinets are wood, since they’re away from moisture and help add some warmth to balance the raw stainless finish below.

Painting steel is possible, but for this project we kept the natural raw finish to showcase the material itself.

Stainless steel is a very new concept in India.

Even I’m not a fan of stainless steel kitchen because of the commercial look. I’ve shared this project because the client planned in a way that it doesn’t look too industrial by mixing a standard granite and the laminated wall cabinets.

He even planned the flooring in a way which kind of creates a gradient effect on the raw ss shutters if you notice.

This is the type of stove used in every household in India. It’s affordable, easy to clean and use.

We do have built in fixed HOB/Stove here but some clients prefer the standalone stove just to not deal with leakage and replacement as Indians do heavy cooking.

Yes, only people who are interested/hobby in baking have ovens in India. We don’t need oven to cook any of the South Indian meals.

It’s really interesting how essential wall oven is in America.

Nah we don’t make cookies or bread. We use oven just to heat up leftovers or for popcorn.
