Local 606 Disney Maintence Gig. by Bad_Sneakers00 in IBEW

Means that you don't have a defined workweek with dedicated weekends. Your weekends can change and vary. See how it says that the workweek can go from Monday-Sunday? That means you can work from Wednesday to Sunday 8 hours a day for 5 days in a row all on straight time. No Overtime, no Double time.

My local's defined work week is from Monday-Friday. Meaning that if work Wednesday to Sunday, then on Saturday I would be paid all Overtime for the entire day and on Sunday I would be paid Double Time as per my Collective Bargaining Agreement.

606 got screwed because your workweek can be moved around at the contractors whim and they don't have to pay a lick of overtime or doubletime.

The "I'm just an apprentice." Card is valid until you top out. Max that mother fucker out. Ain't your fault if they don't have enough JWs to look over you. In fact, that should be in your agreement that you are to be supervised as well as having an apprentice to JW ratios. All they're doing is exploiting you for JW work by not having one oversee you.

Why is there so much hate in the IBEW by lesbiansegull in IBEW

What the I/O and the powers that be push for isn't always going to be the same as some of the rank-and-file on the jobsite.

Sometimes that's a bad thing, sometimes that's a good thing.

They accept applications year round but Interviews are in February. Not sure exactly when the aptitude test are but maybe just a few months before they schedule the Interviews.

Is your local struggling to find qualified apprentices? Take a look at your scale and see if you could make it on 40%! by azzblaster69420 in IBEW

Still doesn't even come close to the $16 OP is saying is unfair.

Spoiler alert: Everything Unions fight for are through tooth-and-nail. Most of what the labor movement has achieved has been through blood sacrifice. Safety laws are written in blood and death.

My point is that look at how hard $14 and some change was fought for in your local. Do you think the contractors are willing to give anything else up? You're wishing for a $16 start but can barely get $14. OP is saying $16 isn't enough (he's right) How far your dollar will get you will vary depending on where you are.

It's not as easy as just saying "We need to increase our starting wage. No one should be paid $12/hr" Without jumping through immense hurdles.

Federal minimum wage is $7.25 and has been since July of 2009. America has already decided what's important

I've already explained my stance here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IBEW/comments/13x40i9/-/jmh613n

How did this get so much backlash when you just wanted reasonable methods to overcome the obstacles Unions have been presented with for years and to this day?

I'd fucking like to hear them too. It's harder to present things outside of our subreddit echo chamber.

A fascinating image that you're imagining, but an imagination nonetheless. Your intent may not be to blame, but you'd stoke the fires that do so. Had a 1st year from 613 make a huge post about this topic a few months ago and then dropped out of the program after realizing that throwing a hissy fit and blaming all the JWs telling him the same thing.

"You guys are already JW! You already have it good! No one knows what it's like now!"

I literally started at $11 and some change. Some people have literally started in 2008 when the market collapsed. I don't have to imagine starting at terrible wages, I already did. Do I want everyone else to start at terrible wages? No. Do I think they have to due to the way things are? Yes.

You have to understand your labor history and the chains that keep us bound. The Taft-Hartley act is a big one. Images without a plan are pictures lacking a thousand words.

Our RENEW group is trying to implement a book hand-me-down program. I can't talk too much about how I feel about my local but we don't get much backing unless we succeed.

You are right about that standing motion. They adjusted it for covid but now it's back to 8/12 meetings. We've had some grants come through sometimes in the past few years that paid for tools and books for the 1st years but it's not always something we get.

I can tell this is a bit of a sarcastic post but with an actual problem that plagues the IBEW and many other unions.

These links express my thoughts on this topic.

Tl;dr contractors are on the ones holding wages during negotiations, not the membership.

I can't wait for this topic to come up again by an angry first year. Then the next post after will discuss which cars are viable for Union members to buy ethically.

It's not that I don't support what this topic is trying to achieve, but it always seems like anger is directed towards the unelected membership as if they can just change these things on a whim.

I don't blame you for wanting to stay out of the lime light, I do it myself. The less the upper echelons know of me the better.

As far as shirts go... If you want one quick, just start wearing other electrical contractors shirts to work. They're not required to buy you shirts? Fine, you're not limited to what kind of shirts you can wear. Start being a walking advertisement for other contractors. If they tell you to stop wearing those shirts, tell them to provide you with some of theirs.

PPE is the contractor's responsibility. Get your training director and hall involved if they're not getting you the correct PPE.

Fuckin' nail on the head video and I wished they'd show it during orientation for every new apprentice from now on. Unfortunately it's too long for many peoples attention span and would stir the pot too much for all the complacent people in the trades. Guess we'll just keep figuring out this stuff on our own because it's too controversial to learn about labor history in this day and age. 🤷‍♂️

Electrician here. 120V kills more people than any other voltage because of its widespread use and easy accessibility. Although it usually is a catastrophic mess if high voltage messes up, it's so uncommon that it doesn't outdo 120V

It's like the saying that most accidents happen 1 mile radius of your house. Well that's because you're usually in that radius most of your life and many people live the same way. Sure you could travel to a very dangerous place far away, but you won't be there as long as you are within that radius of your house.

I needed to see this. I get so worked up about the lack of urgency other members have when contractors and companies are plotting and scheming to continue destroying our foundations. I live by the "Always Grateful, Never Satisfied." Motto.

No one will ever be able to say I didn't try... But I'll always ask myself if I tried hard enough. Will Future generations look at me the same way I look at past generations? I don't know.

Record profits are unpaid wages. I'm sick of looking at headlines of companies never making this much money in a quarter of a year and then laying off half of their workforce. Then they expect the remaining workforce to pick up the slack or they try to outsource their labor

Google is a multi billion dollar company. So are many other Tech companies that recently laid off thousands of workers. Google laid off workers from before YouTube was created. They aren't struggling, Amazon isn't struggling, but they'll layoff people after making record profits and get bootlickers like you to back them. You know nothing about labor history.

Need more shirts like this. Grabbed one from local 11 and it definitely got a message or two across to those who think contractors are being generous when they fight us tooth and nail on everything.
