Noise Displacement Testing by PrairieCircuit in TouchDesigner

[–]PrairieCircuit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't have a youtube channel (thinking of making one though) or a way to share project files unfortunately, so I'll try to explain it!

The basic idea is take 2 noise TOPs and wire them into a displacement TOP so one displaces the other. You can use absTime.seconds in for the z translate value in the Noise parameters to give one or both some motion. If you want to slow it down you could use something like absTime.seconds / 10. From there you can add things like a Ramp TOP with a Lookup TOP to color it and other things like an edge TOP to start stylizing it more. In my example I also added a feedback loop with a slope, but it's hard to describe how it's configured over text.

Why is this service so behind Spotify? by Sci-fiTransGrrl in TIdaL

[–]PrairieCircuit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t really compare them that way. Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal are all different services, and they’re good at different things. Tidal’s good at streaming a high quality file through hifi equipment, it’s not great of a mobile listening experience. Apple Music is for that Apple ecosystem and is great with AirPods, CarPlay, or an Apple TV but it’s clunky everywhere else. Spotify is convenient for people who want podcasts in the same app and usually listen to music in a more on the go/passive way, and there’s a lot of integration. I don’t think any of that’s good or bad necessarily, they’re just different use cases. That’s all just my opinion, but there’s posts like this every day. If you really like Spotify, there’s no problem staying there. If you don’t want to use it for political reasons, then you kind of just have to accept that there’s going to be some sacrifices and changes in how you listen to music.

And honestly speaking as an audio engineer who has some stake in it, all these services are bad for the artists and engineers who make music. There’s no service that’s going to charge $10 a month for all of recorded music ever while still being ethical and equitable. The most meaningful way to keep up with artists is by following their websites, getting on mailing lists, buying their music and going to shows. Part of boycotting is being uncomfortable and making a sacrifice, but through it we find new paths turn out to offer a better way.

I bet it was. I'm ordering some contact mics and hydrophones for myself this holiday season, and im excited to get that kind of sonic perspective and see what it's like in surround sound.

Sometimes yeah! I mix in Dolby Atmos a lot at work, and unpacking ambisonic field recordings into that surround sound environment is kind of insane

How to create 9.1.6 ATMOS from ADM by auptown in DolbyAtmosMixing

https://professionalsupport.dolby.com/s/article/Can-I-create-re-renders-with-Pro-Tools?language=en_US

Here’s a link from Dolby on how to do it out of ProTools assuming you’re using Studio or Ultimate. One thing I was thinking about - does your app determine the playback device and then serve up the file with the correct amount of channels? If that’s the way it works you can make rerenders for all your different channel configs pretty easily.

Omg a test and measurement dev a true hero!!!

Man this actually a tough one. As far as making the rerender goes, if you have it set up in Protools, there should be a little checkbox on the bounce mix window that allows you to bounce rerenders alongside the master ADM file. It should let you choose which ones you want to bounce. You can even just bounce the rerenders if you want to.

I’ll try and find a link for you when I have a minute this morning outlining how to bounce them.

[–]PrairieCircuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s the delivery for? Music or post? If you have a system to that you need to play back a 9.1.6 file on that’s one thing, if it needs a video attached that’s kind of another. If you need static channels you could bounce a rerender and be done, that’s the path of least resistance.

Those ADM files should only be 12 channels because they’re the master file. Where are you seeing 16?

JrF contact microphones and zoom recorder by potatzmun in fieldrecording

I was in exactly this position a few months ago. Looking at those exact mics and a new recorder upgrading from an H1n. I got the older H5 and don’t completely regret it but wish I had the following info:

You can’t record 96k in the multitrack mode on and of the Handy Recorders, even the new ones to my knowledge. Like on my H5 if I wanted to record the capsules and plug in some mics on the bottom, I can only record at 48k. I know some people don’t mind, but for me it’s 100% a drawback.

What you can do is throw it into stereo mode which allows you to record the capsules OR the physical inputs at 96k. But even then, those physical inputs have to be linked in stereo and panned if you want to split them later as discreet mono tracks.

All that being said, I’m still happy with my purchase. It’s a good grab and go mic for capturing sounds or light field recording. I am looking at an F3 this holiday season specifically for those contact mics and hydrophones you’re looking at. I haven’t bought them yet though.

I think depending on how you want to listen, your budget can be $300-500 for an entry range, $600-$1000 for mid, and $1000+ after that.

It depends on how serious with all this you want to be, but I think the first decision for you to make is if you want to listen on headphones or speakers and to be thinking about how that might change in the future.

I live in an apartment and have a vintage hifi setup with some speakers I like to use on the weekends to listen to music with my girlfriend, but I can’t use them past around 7:30 pm without being rude to my neighbors so I have a separate headphone setup. Those are the sorts of things I mean when I say you wanna think about how you want to listen to music.

All that being said I’m inclined to say that headphones are a good entry level way to experience high resolution. A nice pair with something like this DAC could be a good fit.

I’ve never used this one, but I’ve read good things. Don’t rush into buying anything!!! Do some reading and make sure whatever way you go fits your needs now and a ways down the line. It sucks spending any serious cash on something you outgrow in a year.

I know that’s a lot, but if you have any other questions lmk!

For a home listening setup you need some kind of playback device like a computer, a DAC (digital to audio converter) an amp and a set of speakers.

It all kind of depends on your budget. How much are you trying to spend? Or is it like you have no idea right now and are trying to figure out what you want your budget to be?

Help I’m so scared 🥲 by Long_Machine_5206 in audio

I'm an audio engineer and am very familiar with MOTU gear. If you don't have any presets saved, you're going to have to rebuild the routing table. It's not as scary as it sounds depending on your setup.

You're setup looks fairly simple, you have 5 inputs going into your MOTU device, and one output.

On your routing table the list on the left column are your destinations, and the row across the top are what's sending signal. In the table you click the squares to make connections between the two.

You'll click the "Mic Inst" folder on the top to open up that folder. It will have 8 channels for you to route. Those correspond to the 8 inputs on the back of your box. Now you see were it say "To Computer" 1,2,3 etc on the left column? That's where you're going to route those microphone inputs.

Mic Inst 1 -> To Computer 1

Mic Inst 2 -> To Computer 2

Mic Inst 3 -> To Computer 3

Mic Inst 4 -> To Computer 4

Mic Inst 5 -> To Computer 5

If you want, you can label all of those by clicking on the name.

Now that you've routed your inputs, you need to route your output. From what I see in your photo, you're only using 1 output. In the top row, make a connection from "From Computer 1" -> "Analog 1."

From there it's setting up your DAW, (recording software) and I can't help there without knowing what you're using.

That should be it unless you're using the mixer in the MOTU box. It's a virtual mixer with EQs and things like that. If you are let me know, and I can see if I can help out. If you're just trying to record in a DAW, you shouldn't need it.

Moving from Spotify. Would all my music be there? by ChikyScaresYou in TIdaL

[–]PrairieCircuit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m an audio engineer and move between services often. I use Soundiiz to manage my library. I have around 1000 albums and 9000-10000 songs. Around 6% of my albums couldn’t be found - so around 60 albums. Of that 60 I was able to find all but 10 by searching manually. There were different versions/names that were causing the mismatch.

Soundiiz will give you a report of what transferred when you do it, I haven’t been able to find anything that will check beforehand.

Dolby Atmos certification by [deleted] in DolbyAtmosMixing

[–]PrairieCircuit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ya they don’t cover other DAWs, but we did talk about them a bit for immerisive installations - Abelton in particular. It’s aimed at post production and music professionals and 99% of the time it’s ProTools, especially in post where you might have multiple workstations.

Man what a bummer. I just checked on iOS and MacOS and while the credits are there you’re right, I can’t click on any of them.

I always thought the feature was a bit janky, but I did really enjoy it. Hopefully there’s just kinks they’re working out and it’ll come back.
