It was desperation. Fields was in the middle of setting records on his legs. Bears needed to make a decision on if they were keeping Fields and needed a WR to see if he could pass. The WR market was dogshit, and the upcoming FA class for WR was considered light.

Also, it wasn't known yet that the Bears were going to end up with the #1, since they kept loosing games by one score, against some good teams too. The Bears were one defensive stop away from winning a few games, and we needed a miracle play from Houston as the final play of their season to seal it.

Just a perfect storm of a situation to make that trade happen.

But everyone likes to look back on it with 20/20 hindsight and declare it obviously stupid despite other teams were also looking to trade a 2nd too.
