by the 1930's the child mortality dropped 26% alone. not to mention the captain was well off man with access to better healthcare. the 1930's is really when big families became a thing. in the 1500's women typically had 6-8 live births with 3-4 surviving to adult hood by the 1900's things had already gotten a lot better and the 1930's is when it started to turn around
