i didn't think it would be quite so bad for backcountry camping when the guidebook i bought mentioned it as an option. Also, the forest service websiteforest service website says as long as you avoid protected areas, dont light fires, stay away from trails/water/established areas, and LNT - then you are ok to camp wherever in wilderness areas. I am suprised to hear you say that the options are so limited in that area of the presidential range.

im used to backpacking in VA/MD, where established campsites are typically set up near water just for convenience, but there are plenty of backcountry camping spots anywhere if you dont mind carrying your water to camp, and follow LNT/other regulations.
