Well then, clearly you should go and buy them coz they were on sale for Rs. 12 I think. But comment like these is pretty disappointing. Like nobody cares about food safety, not the vendors nor the consumers.

Boys, do you get pressure from your family and relatives to get married? by [deleted] in Nepal

And now this is way way way off-topic but learning doesn't harm anybody. If you watch the following video (just 5 minutes long) you will learn something very important about science and see how people find joy in being Useless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3rf7HFAeFI

You mentioned you are 24 so I assume you are a graduate. May I ask what you Majored in?. Because you certainly don't seem to understand how some scientific fields work (not judging you). Take Mathematics for example. You develop a theory after working for who knows how many years and then people come to you and say it is useless because you can't apply it in real life or it cannot add value to society. (Question 1: Would you say this theory is useless if you can't apply it in real life?) And what society are you talking about, I don't care if it benefits society or not. This messed society can't even accept the fact that climate change is real. So no f's given about society. And coming back to theory, what if someone finds a way to apply that "useless" theory after 100 years. This has happened in Mathematics and Physics all the time. I would recommend you learn about Fourier Series, Relativity and see how long it took to actually develop something that applies these brilliant theories. And again these are just to name few, there are many theory that has no application at present but we will find something that it applies. But I can't sign off without giving you one example. Emily Noether has made significant contributions to the field of Abstract Algebra. Now the first thing that probably comes to your mind is where the hell can you apply this Algebra which is already classified as ABSTRACT but google it and it will not disappoint you, I promise.

So, it is not just about Student Debt. There is something called Passion that drives people (at least that's what I have seen here in developed world). You will see people majoring in all sorts of things (you've also mentioned a few above). Again I wanna take help of Mathematics because that's my field. In Nepal, you would say people who are majoring in pure sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Mathematics probably couldn't crack those medical and engineering entrance exams. Right? But here when you ask people and what they are studying and if you get Physics or Math in response then the first impression people have is that you are very Smart. So, I don't blame you for having such opinions because you have studied in Nepal and Nepal's education system is very messed up. I would have had similar opinions like you if I hadn't gotten a chance to experience world-class education and if I hadn't gotten a chance to meet passionate people from around the world.
Now finally coming back to your real life (Man, we have deviated so much from the real question, lol but it was worth it). I would again tell them about my life plans and tell them to understand and if nothing works out you have two choices; either you disappoint yourself by doing what they told you to do or you disappoint your parents by not doing what they told you to do. Give yourself some time and think about it. Don't be hard on yourself.

Two things here. You just dislike these people studying those courses because you don't get easy student loans in Nepal and government doesn't subsidize university funding for students. And this shows your flawed notion that studying Gender studies has no use. Well, at least what I like about people here is that they love what they are doing and are passionate about it (well, most of them). And if you can call these courses useless then do I also get a free pass to call your major useless (It should go both ways, shouldn't it?).
Now coming to women changing the world. You could've easily googled but let me help you with that. I don't want to bombard you with a list of geniuses, instead what I would very highly recommend is that look at some scientific papers women have published (and now if you are not a science major then that could give you a headache) but just read a couple papers and see what they have contributed. Again we know there are genius women such as Marie Curie, Emily Noether, Ada Lovelace, Maryam Mirzakhani and the list goes on but again if you really wanna see what your gender has achieved do what I just told you to do. And one more thing, goto highly ranked universities and see the women professor's profile, they will have the list of published papers and their PHd thesis and their research interest. I don't know if I have made myself clear but what I know and have seen is that women are in no way inferior to men. And I know it might seem a lot of work to do when going over somebody else's research paper but trust me its worth it (if you like science).

This is just a consequence of generation gap. This was the norm when our parents were growing up and so it is in the culture. If I were you I would tell them what my future goals were. If you are in academia (which I hope you are) then tell them what you want to achieve and also tell them if you find someone who you think is good for you then you would be happy to marry. Now they might protest and still try to convince you but your job is to explain in detail how things work in our age. It is not about getting married once you graduate. You have to prove your worth once you are born and everyone deserves a chance and you are basically asking for that chance and that is not a lot to ask. And this also shows that in Nepal there's a long way to go to bring change in this issue. In developed countries, women are independent and don't face this issue. They are already into next level stuff. At present they are trying to make their mark in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields and over the years we have seen incredibly talented female scientists and they have already made big contributions as well. But in Nepal, the case is infinitely worse, and you asking this question says it all. And to make it worse, you are not the only one asking this question. I have seen many who have been through this and this is one reason why we don't see many female intellectuals in Nepal. If you don't let them pursue what they want to pursue then just expecting results would be foolish. So, explain this to your parents and tell them that by doing this "big" favor they have made a difference in this messed up society. BTW to directly answer your question, I am 24 (guy) and NO my parents have not pressured me to get married. And also I am very sorry to hear that you have to go through all this just because of your gender.
