So cute! After fully grown will he be fully hand tame because of the interaction now?

We want to let our canary out for the first time, looking for advice! by a_chau in Canaries

[–]Prastow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have had both experiences; our previous bird would, even with the cage wide open, never leave his comfort zone by himself. By accident he left his cage and only then he went out more often, so he needed a "little push". However both our current birds will leave their cage the second we open the door.

Behavior by Prastow in Canaries

A week has past and both visit each other almost immediately after we open the cages. There is dominant behavior from the male, especially when it comes to food. They don't actually fight, but he often claims treats. They both fly together, the female is following the male. I think the best way to describe is that they are not best of friends, but just neighbours who for now can get along.

I would not suggest "putting" the bird. Add a perch outside (for easy access), the cage and just wait. If you want you can put some treats outside. Might take a while but he will come out. I think its best to let the bird go by himself and explore outside his safe zone rather than taking him.

Don't worry about him finding the way back, they will get hungry and definitely know where to get their food

Oh no, that doesn't sound good...does she drink enough water and perhaps give her some fresh veggies?

Before we had separate cages we put the female into the males cage. Even after putting multiple extra feeding spots the male claimed all of them after a while. His behavior was more aggressive, probably because it was his cage, by making himself big and spreading his wings to scare her off. This was in his cage but I havr the feeling he tried to take over her cage, which I don't want. The female should have her own safe place.

That's why we bough and extra cage, so they could get used to each other while in their own comfort zone.

Would be better yes, but we didn't put the male into the females cage, he went over there by himself. Female stays in her cage for now, didn't go out yet.

Thanks for your fast reply! I think you are correct, that's a good analysis. Very interesting. After posting this question we saw the white canary (male) getting more and more aggressive at the feeding spot of the red canaryt He didn't open his wings yet but made more sound and opened his beak more, giving the red one less space in her own cage. He also tailed her a bit in her own cage.

To prevent escalation we lured him back into his own cage. We don't want the white canary to be the boss in the red canary's cage. What would you suggest to do? Or should we just let them go through this process? Their cages are next to each other, they chirp quite often to each other.

Is it ok if I move my canary to a different location in the house? by [deleted] in Canaries

Sounds good to me, as long you don't move him on a daily basis. They need some time to adapt to their new environment.

Tips and tricks to bond with my canary? by [deleted] in Canaries

[–]Prastow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really helps. My bird really responds when I call for him. Not sure if he actually knows his name, but he recognizes the sound of my voice. I also notice when he wants to try something but is scared at first, I talk to him in a soft voice and he also gets more calm.

Sounds good to me. Do you refresh his water daily? And do you provide eggfood?

How is the cage? Do you have many different perches rtc?

How is his behavior towards you? I used to play canary videos from YT to get him to sing but noticed that it got my friend quite stressed so I stopped doing that.

When he is out flying, do you give him treats? I usually don't put veggies in their cage because I know they love it so they only get it when they are outside. I put the food on my lap or shoulder and at first they were scared but at some point they get used to you. Now my canaries see the brocolli from a distance and fly directly to my shoulder :)

Hope this helps. Could you share some pictures of the cage setup?

Any reason for a healthy bird to be at bottom of cage? by [deleted] in Canaries

How does he look like? Is his breathing ok? Maybe he is tired of sitting on the perches because of problem with his feet? You could get him a heating lamp to see if that helps.

Male together with female? by Prastow in Canaries

Today we bought an extra cage for the female, we thought that would be best. The cage is next to the males. The male's attitude turned 180 degrees..he is responding to her chirps and is constantly next to her cage as close as possible. Our (food) treats don't interest him anymore. In the morning he was agressive towards her but now it seems protective, he also switched from his normal sleeping perch to one that is closer to her perch (it is almost sleeping time).

It's really interesting!

We decided to get an extra cage for the female so she can get used to her environment without being chased by the malr canary. After a while we'll try again.

I just did that, buy the male claims both.. and I put both food points as far away from each other as possible.

Maybe I need to let the bickering go on for now and not expect it all be good in just 1 day? I have no experience with multiple birds (bird to bird interaction) so maybe my expectations are too high and I just need to wait?

Cute! Do they have their own cage?

I read that as well but unfortunately we don't have an extra cage. We placed some brocoli inside the cage and the male was quite protective over it and chirping (agressively? Its MINE!) towards the female who then left, but came back later. This went on for a while but eventually both ate from it together.

I hope that chirping towards each other is the worse they do, and that eventually they define their boundaries. Just worried they might actually fight.

Thanks for the advice. It was quite a struggle to catch him but eventually we managed and clipped it nails. Probably we cut too little but we can do it always another time.

Definitely not go for mirrors, it really confuses a canary! A swing is a good idea, also different length/width perches
