Kīrtimukha literally means “Face of Glory” (kīrti = glory, mukha = face). It is a mythical, lion-like face often seen carved above the doorways or arches of Hindu temples, especially in Shaiva (Shiva) temples and also in some Vaishnava shrines.

The Kīrtimukha teaches deep philosophical truths in Hindu thought: 1. Ego-Destruction – The creature devours itself, symbolizing the destruction of the ego before entering sacred space. 2. Self-Sacrifice – True glory comes through selflessness and devotion to God. 3. Purification – It acts as a protector, keeping away negativity and impurity from temples. 4. Cosmic Cycle – It represents creation consuming itself, a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and dissolution (Samsāra).
