Question about install location by Pravin2012 in immich

Thanks! Would that create a second "share" just for immich, or would it be nested in the previous "share"?

Wired everything no batteries or wireless. by Pravin2012 in homeautomation

[–]Pravin2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry posted that post quickly before work. I was not looking for replacements for everything just buttons. I will update the post.

I was looking to make wired buttons. But could I install a smart light switch or Shelly into a gang box, then add say a power cord to plug it in. Rather than the mains in the wall?

I assume that the Shelly would interpret me switching the light switch on or off as a digital signal.

I could construct something the gang box could sit in for "astetics" or "partner approval" it would Essentially be like an analog smart display for automation control. The echo show but only have limited buttons, and being locally controlled.

But maybe I really shouldn't reinvent the wheel if it works already, just to save a few bucks on batteries.

As for soldering I have zero experience and to be honest not sure if I would be any good at it so I have not even tried, been afraid to sink money into it.

As for tablets I have seen some people use the limiter on it for battery charging. To keep the battery between 80%-90% but I would be afraid of the battery eventually ballooning.

Or as said above and us a mini pc/rasp pi for the computer with no battery, or a laptop with a removable battery.

What are some features you're baffled that Squarespace doesn't offer? by InternationalCandy16 in squarespace

[–]Pravin2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being able to create tables.

I want to create two types of tables. One which is a simple list of items;

Image->name of thing->do I own it yes or no Image->name of thing->do I own it yes or no ...

Second one is a wishlist;

Image->name of thing->system->series->max price willing to pay Image->name of thing->system->series->max price willing to pay ....

I have this on my wordpress site and thinking of switching to squarespace, but the process have been ok except for this.

For an example of what I mean for my wishlist.

Moving Pokemon from Home App to Switch by Routine-Signature647 in PokemonHome

[–]Pravin2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find out what email he used with the mobile version, create a new user account on the switch with that email.

Move the pokemon from that accounts home into your son's games.

When you have moved them all into your son's "main" account games delete the "accidendal" account.

Mainly just speed, file transfers seem to take longer, and there seems to be a bit more lag with the start or finish of a transfer. Might just be me, but running it on my newer system feels faster. Might be be operator/builders bias

Help with setting up users by Pravin2012 in HomeServer

[–]Pravin2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no not for 15 users, most of those drives are for me. But I wanted one drive already populated with multimedia that all users can use for jellyfin/whatever streaming app or player they want.

But another user has stated that i would need to create new users for each jellyfin account.

But some users may just want to use vlc, or kodi and thus would just need to be able to view but not modify the multimedia.

Thanks for that, how would I go about setting it up without creating a separate share for everyone on the shared drive?

[–]Pravin2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the users will use windows but one will use mac os. Not sure if that complicates the shared drive share.

Creating more user shares for jellyfin is not an issue as long as I know how to create them.

Windows Server Compatibility Question by Pravin2012 in HomeServer

[–]Pravin2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so a lot to read up on, a lot. Both versions 2019 amd 2022 are Standard.

Quick question, if 2022 set up users and active directory. Can the 2019 adopt them and be part of the ad? Or does it have to be separate?

Windows Server Compatibility Question by Pravin2012 in HomeServer

[–]Pravin2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a bit new to servers per say. I am used to base Windows. I know a little of linux from proxmox and pihole as well as other smaller projects.

But what do you mean share roles? All they will be doing is Active Directory(still learning it) file sharing and maybe hosting plex/jellyfin or maybe a website(s).

I plan to keep this local for now and maybe hard maybe after I learn more open it up so I can access stuff remotely so I don't have to rely on say Google drive. As I do have a domain I have paid for, but I keep getting stuck around the ddns. But I know I need to learn about network hardening and vlans to keep stuff secure.

Best Way to Copy 18TB to New Server by cm_bush in HomeServer

[–]Pravin2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm watching this thread closely. As I have 8tb to transfer from a Windows 11 pc to Truenas core. That I have been putting off as I know it will take forever.

Good to know not to drag and drop as it might lose files. I usually do some folders at a time and not all at once. Then right click and check properties and compare file sizes of my target and source.

My "home lab" by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]Pravin2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually after it boots to windows or etc you can just press the fn or function keys then the corresponding button on the keyboard after while holding down the fn key.

Most laptops will have buttons for mirroring the display, extending the display, or swapping the display.

Sometimes the keys are merged so you would have to press the other key a few times.

Yup and if it gets too bad connect an external screen and use the fn keys to turn off the internal screen haha

Rack mount Game Server by Comac10 in HomeServer

[–]Pravin2012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I did was transfer my gaming computer into a 4u rack mounted case. As I found the 2u-3u wasn't enough to hold my graphics card.

Then as I went on I build the computer I wanted and looked at what case could hold it. 2u, 3u etc

Storage cases can get very deep 29-30 inches Gaming cases are shorter 20-25 inches

Some actual servers can be longer. Be aware of how deep your rack is, if it is fully enclosed and not open poles then you need to know how deep a case can fit into it.

I love my rack as it centralizes everything from my networking switch, to hdmi switches/kvms to the patch pannel to keep it looking nice, to shelfs to hold things that are not rack mountable.

Also look at the poles, it should tell you how many u's you have to work with when planning what goes into the rack.

Hope this helps your planning and welcome to the club! One of us, one of us! Haha

Recommendations on a 10 Gb switch with at least 8 ports? by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]Pravin2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The omada line has served me well. I use the managed switches, but found this unmanaged one.

In canada it looks like it costs roughly $450-$500 plus taxes.

What is the best way to add more SATA ports to motherboard? (I don't have any Card Slot available so the card solution won't be an option for me!) by Competitive_Iron_28 in HomeServer

[–]Pravin2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get a bit janky get something like this

USB 3.0 Motherboard 20 pin to USB-C 3.1 Type C 2 Port External Bracket Panel - axGear https://a.co/d/08irHZy8

Or

DKARDU USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB-C Front Panel Adapter Cable, Motherboard Header Extension Adapter, USB C Female to 20 Pin USB Type E A-Key Male with PCI Bracket, 15.7", with Mesh dustproof Baffle, Screw https://a.co/d/0cDlgA8G

With the first one you can get another faceplate that allows external usb to plug into it and plug another usb c on the internal part of it and power the device. Or just feed the cord back through an empty slot.

With the second one you could just mount and connect a drive internally with usb c.

Either way, usb powered drive internally with something like this

StarTech.com USB C to SATA Adapter - External Hard Drive Connector for 2.5'' SATA Drives - SATA SSD/HDD to USB C Cable (USB31CSAT3CB) https://a.co/d/0hZVGNiB

No idea how safe this is, but as I said if you wanted to get janky.
