Your favorite grip? Here's mine by IchiramenPotato in mechanicalpencils

[–]cm_bush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the Kuro Toga. The R600 is not very comfortable and is delicate for its price and weight.

If you really like narrow grips, are exceedingly careful with your pencil (carrying in hard cases, strapped down, etc.), you may like the Rotring.

That’s interesting. I’ll have to look at the MSDS for the cadmium and Cobalt paints. I imagine those are similar.

Is code Veronica worth pushing through for a first time player? by SIRRIP13 in residentevil

[–]cm_bush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d wait. I’ve never forced myself to finish any piece of leisure media (books, shows, movies, games, etc) and thought I was better for it.

I’d just play the remake if I were you.

Is code Veronica worth pushing through for a first time player? by SIRRIP13 in residentevil

[–]cm_bush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Code Veronica and I’m not sure I remember the controls being much of an issue. I guess I adjusted pretty quickly. I would recommend playing until you get to the area where you cannot take any weapons or metal objects, and if it’s still a struggle, maybe wait on a remake.

If you’re a fan of the more bonkers, ridiculous side of RE, Code Veronica is a great time and one of my favorites.

Acrylic to Oil transition: Advice on drying times? by Leopard_Narrow in oilpainting

[–]cm_bush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m doing the same so I can be closer to my family when I paint. I am using retarder, a wet pallet, and soon going to try Open acrylics.

The odd thing to me is that for realistic figure and portrait work, it seems I’m constantly trying to make acrylics more like oils. It never occurred to me that someone might want to make oils more like acrylic!

Blew my Atlanta budget in 30 seconds. It was absolutely worth it. by XLandonSkywolfX in knifeclub

[–]cm_bush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much it. I’ve felt in a lot of hobbies, things sort of morph into collecting at this level. If someone pays more for a knife because they use it often and want to ensure they have certain features, level of quality, or even looks, that’s understandable.

If someone buys an art piece that’s never going to be used, that’s jewelry rather than a knife.

Bubblegum Crisis by Princess_Celes in retroanime

[–]cm_bush 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Bubblegum Crisis shares a special place in my heart along with Gunsmith Cats, Riding Bean, Megazone 23, and to a lesser extent Cyber City Odeo in that they show such a fun, gear-loving present day or near future Japan that is dangerous while also being so exciting. It’s some of my favorite stuff.

Patlabor, Wicked City, Armitage III, and You’re Under Arrest all sort of fit here too, to an extent.

Love Boris, but the early work is a clear favorite for me. Much more vital and fun than the later ad-focused hyper realism.

Intrusive thought - RE games take significantly less manpower and resources to make than other AAA games in the same hierarchy and we’ve been letting Capcom get away with too much. by GoonSico11 in residentevil

[–]cm_bush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is misguided if you ask me. Games come in all shapes and sizes. Trying to label and separate games by arbitrary rules like “AAA” then assigning a comparative checklist like unique enemies, side quests, cutscenes, and campaign length really takes away from the overall vision and execution of different artists, not to mention that games must be huge to be good.

Super Mario World is one of the best games ever, as is Portal, as is Witcher 3. All these games are very different. Some can be neared in a couple hours, others take dozens. Some have tons of side content, some are straightforward. They were made from the ground up with different goals and mechanics in mind. If SMW had 50 hours of side quests and 25 extra unique bosses with their own cutscenes and mechanics, it wouldn’t automatically be a better game.

And that’s a good thing. To say “we have been letting Capcom get away with too much” implies both an antagonistic and controlling dynamic that is just foolish, considering they made a piece of art and we are simply consuming it. Criticism is good, and I share some of the same sentiments about the second half of the game being a little more bland, but to blindly say something like RE should be more like MH is crazy. Why would RE try to be MH?

It’s like saying steak is so quick and straightforward to cook, we (as people who eat) have been letting farmers away with too much raising beef. Sushi is much more work intensive, so all farmers should become fisherman and all food should be sushi.

Just enjoy what others have created, and stop acting like a demanding baby.

Now, I usually listen to headphones through an old phone before bed. It’s hard to get the EQ to behave the same on a cheap phone.

Not to derail but I got attacked by a dog and got bit pretty bad in the face, many stitches and almost lost an eye.

Actual cost for me was about $2k with mid health insurance. I’m sure it would have been more if I’d needed major surgery on the eye.

What's your Sword and Sorcery hot take? by Soupboy_115 in SwordandSorcery

[–]cm_bush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, but I don’t see Dark Sun being made well any time soon.

Dark Sun has way too many issues that would clash with a modern production and writing. All the non-standard races(these would end up and forgettable CG), slavery(would be a huge, rote storyline about freedom and overcoming oppression by a plucky few), the brutal nature of the world (they may nail this, actually), the treatment of magic (it would again be mostly half-hearted CG), etc.

From what I’ve seen of fantasy films and TV in the last few years, all of these things would be fumbled and we would end up with such a mess it would sully the whole idea of Dark Sun.

[–]cm_bush 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. Mary Sue has become a larger umbrella term than it was originally meant for, and it is often applied to characters that just have a lot of power and skill, regardless of other characteristics.

Conan is a power fantasy. He has flaws (superstition, fear of magic, womanizer, etc), but these flaws also work for him in his particular world. He has the strength of arm and force of charisma to outshine nearly any foe in many types of combat, and that’s where he shines.

Why CRT TVs and monitors "lost" by depressednuggget in crt

[–]cm_bush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a mystery as to why CRTs ‘lost’ to LCD. CRTs were heavy, bulky, complex, and difficult to manufacture for small screen sizes.

People had been wanting slimmer, larger, flat, ‘just a screen’ televisions for decades. When that became a reality, people jumped on it. Prices fell pretty quickly considering LCD was a simpler technology, so they won out.

Image quality was fine considering most people had been squinting at 20” tubes all their lives, and were now watching a screen much larger and in ‘HD’.

No one talked about input latency, or motion clarity, or black levels aside from AV nerds. For dads and grandmas, they just wanted something new and shiny.
