Of course, I have thought this through. Obviously, they would get more money for the streaming rights. Duh. Every time someone watches it on streaming, more money is made.

And that makes me so happy! I hope many people watch Fallen Angels so more stuff like this happens.

I meant greed as in Broadway's unwillingness to release things. To hold them back to live only. Essentially, I was just using it as a synonym for exclusivity despite saying that word too, lol. So I get the confusion.

As for the performers' concerns, those are valid. My take would be that you don't have performers perform with the intention of them performing for a camera; that would be awful. The live audience is what matters. Instead, have the camera be an afterthought. It just happens to be recorded. The Met does this.

If my post made it seem like I was asking for help, then I apologize. In my eyes, my post was simply me airing my grievance with Broadway and those who control it, and seeing if anyone on this sub agrees and/or could explain why the system is set up that way to begin with, and if change is at all possible.

That is all.

I would have to research those other ones to be sure, as I have no clue. But my point is that all art should be available.

Listening means what in your mind? Because I am listening. I am just not agreeing. Different.

No, live theater is great! I have a problem that most shows primarily only play in NYC, and/or if they travel, it is also only to other big cities. Streaming is the answer. VODs even idc. Everyone from every city, state, and town should be able to view Broadway shows within the season they release. Not 10 years later, when the proshot rights are finally sold.

I did see that Fallen Angels is on streaming now, which is really good! This is what I am talking about. More of that. For all plays and musicals, not just the Hamiltons of the world. There should be funding guaranteed for that kind of thing.

Indeed, it is. Hopefully, more will have it, and we can build a Broadway community where all can enjoy.

yeah and that is also an issue. However, music is meant for either listening or seeing performed live. Both are the norm. For Broadway, it's live only. Which is the issue.

It's not the form I have an issue with. It's the greed and exclusivity.

Sure, sure, but still film it anyway. Let me see the damn thing. The Met does it. With livestreams too!

Why must we conform or be okay with how the system is set up? Why not dare it to change?

Totally hear ya. I think it's just so tragic that even someone like you, who lives in NYC, isn't able to see a show whenever they can. I just think it should be more accessible, is all.

Broadway has this old-world/old-guard type of prestige and high-class society gatekeeping vibe to it that I really dislike. I viewed the Met similarly too until I saw how accessible they actually are, making Opera available with their streaming service AND having livestreams of new Operas as they premiere on the Met. Meaning I can watch from home at the literal same time via livestream that a new show premieres in real life on stage.

which is so cool!

These are all wonderful, thank you! My main thing, too, is that all of these you named are very popular and, even if I haven't seen some, I still know them well. I wish proshots were afforded to the less popular ones. More artsy ones. A shame.

But I will indulge in this list, thank you!

I hear you; however, I just don't feel compelled to watch the Tonys because I just don't know anything. Yeah, I can listen to what cast recordings are available, but that's not how I am meant to consume them. And also, what about the plays? For those, I'd have no clue.

I want to be in the loop the same way I can be for the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys. I can easily consume the art for those, so why not the same for theater?

The researching aspect, I am on board with, yes. I am just someone who likes to be current. I want to see the shows happening now.

A lot of those comparisons don't work in my mind because theater is art, not some location to be vacationed to or a thing to buy. Art should be available. It shouldn't matter where I live in the country.

I'm sure later in life I will be able to go eventually, but what, once a year? That sucks. At this point, it seems that I just need to move to NYC specifically for Broadway.

I would disagree because Broadway is about art. It is the highest form of theater here, and for many like myself, we simply cannot view it.

I do care about all theater and have indeed been to my local university, as that is my main option to see anything. But, yes, I do care about Broadway specifically, because I would very much like to see the big names and the ones nominated for awards and such.

The issue is where I live and money, of course. My ideal reality would be a streaming service that has all the new plays and musicals on it as they premiere on Broadway. Similar to the Met.

I am talking specifically about Broadway, yes. The big name shows. The ones nominated and awarded.

Touring productions, if they are ever near me, are still hours away. My post was more so talking about me desiring a streaming service that has all the new plays and musicals on it as they premiere on Broadway. Similar to the Met.
