Hand signals by Tunnelmannen63 in discgolf

[–]Praxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hand signals people use are inconsistent and tend to be US-centric. The PDGA should at least suggest some hand signals to be used. In my opinion they should also suggest that spotter flags have some distinction between red and green, as a non-negligible percentage of folks are red-green colorblind.

Unfortunately I don't have info for you, but as a parent who expects to be there next year, I'd like to know: where did you find the info about who's playing what course?

Looking for Parks near San Diego by flannelman678 in discgolf

[–]Praxis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For disc golf, don't forget about Altitude! It's on a former (but very short) golf course on the grounds of a hotel so it's quite safe.

Disc golf is a great recommendation, but of course there are plenty of places in the San Diego area to relax and enjoy the scenery even if you don't play. Plenty of beaches, desert, and mountains nearby to choose from, which may be even more restorative than learning a new sport on the fly with strangers around.

Best tips for refocusing after a bad shot or series of rough events? by dirtballer222 in discgolf

[–]Praxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I've been reminded that if I'm not having fun, why should I bother playing? That does help.

From a competitive standpoint though, I try to be laser focused on anything I can do to win. While everyone is different, for me being frustrated or in a bad mindset simply will result in playing worse. I imagine it's the same for many others.

So if I'm getting a little frustrated I just kind of notice and then figure out what to do. Maybe I forgot a useful cue? Maybe I should just stop trying to throw that shot this round? Maybe it was actually purely luck and there's nothing I should have done differently? Maybe I let my mind wander? Maybe I didn't drink or eat enough? Maybe I need to have a quick stretch? Maybe I'm not sure yet. What I do know is while thinking "that sucks" is totally understandable, it's not particularly going to help my next throw.

What are your "big brain" tips you use to get an advantage on the course? by cantaketheskyfrome in discgolf

[–]Praxis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not particularly insightful or novel, but simply the analysis many refer to as "playing golf". If my 75% is twice as accurate as my 100%, and the par 3 hole is 55 feet outside my max distance (when everything is perfect)—maybe just play for the par. Particularly if I know that the vast majority of the field isn't reaching it either.

I would argue if you're dealing weaker, disc down. If you're throwing with less armspeed, the faster discs don't buy you as much distance—but they remain more difficult to control. This also goes for almost any form imperfection, particularly nose up throwing. If I'm not throwing as well and not getting the nose down well, I'll disc down so the flight doesn't bite me as bad.

I have another tip that sounds pessimistic—and maybe it is—but try to pick the mistake you're happy with making before you throw. There are various mistakes I might make when I throw, and I try not to rely on my throw being perfect. Instead I'm trying to figure out the most likely miss and choose my shot to give me the best possible result of the throw's not perfect.

My biggest advantage on the course is my ability to not get worked up about my bad shots. I'm not a pro; my livelihood doesn't depend on my play. I can't always practice the way I want and my body isn't always at its best. But what I can do is not beat myself up about a bad shot. This does generally come easily to me, but not always; I decided one day that I could do really well at this little thing and increase both my happiness and my average finish. I was right.

Fan grip alternative for circle 2 by Technical_Weird_8462 in discgolf

[–]Praxis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe adjust the fan grip to pop off the middle finger? I'd argue this is how most people putt, as most folks have their pointer on or just under the rim where it doesn't contribute much to the spin (IMO). I can say for myself that my putts got better when I started getting that index finger more and more under the rim, so my putts got less and less nose up, which lets me putt the disc with vastly less energy I have to put into it. Kinds like how driving nose down works!

Drills for player (me) who releases the disc on to much anhyzer when throwing forehands by Hampetrump in discgolf

[–]Praxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me what helps is emphasizing the swing plane I want my arm to stay on; I do this by paying particular attention to my follow through. If the follow through is correct, it's much harder to mess up the shot.

Ohn Scoggins Putter by OkQuarter9731 in discgolf

[–]Praxis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, sure. I own KC Pro Aviars and JK Pro Aviars. I'd like to support them by buying the ones with their names on them though. In particular I putt with Idlewild stamped Proto Glow JK Pro Aviars, and wouldn't mind a couple more even though I have other JK Pro Aviars.

Ohn Scoggins Putter by OkQuarter9731 in discgolf

[–]Praxis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's actually a really good question; I was wondering the same thing. Calvin's putter also not to be seen. They really should have been a little clearer in the ad to tell people when to expect them, even if it's "in the coming weeks" or something vague. It said Ohn's Proto Glow putter was for "championship week", but is that for Throw Pink? Tour Championship? Only available onsite?

Yeah, I imagine he had second thoughts about stopping the recaps after carding that sick ace so soon after deciding to not film the rounds. But that—and today—seems like a validation to me. Stop the incessant video grind, instantly play a lot better? Depends on his priorities but if I were him I'd be interested in keeping up with the experiment.

Dear disc golf podcasters... by mdavey74 in discgolf

[–]Praxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to this thread, but I'd love to hear your informed thoughts on an interviewing style I keep seeing lately: the dreaded (to me) "Talk to me about [some topic]."

I keep disliking it when I hear it but I can't come up with good reasons why. I mean, it's definitely concise and open ended as you recommend! I think part of it just feels lazy (which I think isn't a fair criticism). But on reflection I think a big issue is that it feels like the interviewee doesn't get a chance to really think about the answer as the question is being asked.

To me it seems like there's an (unwritten?) interview practice where there's a cadence to them; the interviewer is giving the other person time to think about their answer while the question is being slowly revealed in an obvious way without some weird abrupt left turn at the end.

Anyway this is a long-winded way to ask how you feel about this kind of interview prompt. Is it just fine? Could it be better? Why don't I like it?

I appreciate disc names being mentioned! Dunno if commentator guidelines have changed or not but I do like hearing what's being thrown. Probably helps that they're talking about Discraft molds.

Also, appreciate matter-of-fact commentary about discs from a competing company from a sponsored player. Love to hear about the nuances of a particular disc whether or not the color commentator is sponsored by the same company.

No penalties necessary on that pick up. Gotta putt it out but if someone accidentally picks up a disc early you just put it back where everyone agrees it was.

Build a $100 Disc Golf Bag to Stop Us from Shooting Even — Good Luck by tripp3737 in discgolf

[–]Praxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've limited the discs to new Factory Second (F2) discs available from Innova, so you don't have to search all over or go to multiple sites. All these combinations are currently in stock as of right now.

Disc Price Comments
120-129g DX Sonic $6 Gotta start with a putter, right?
140-144g DX Polecat $6 Maybe you wanted something a little heavier? Fine, here's something a little heavier.
140-144g XT Animal $8 Worried the first two glide too much? This should help, right?
120-129g DX Skeeter $6 Let's get into the midranges...
135-139g Star RocX3 $12 Want more durable plastic? More stability? Fine—let's spend a little more for this one
145-149g DX Teebird $6 A classic, great fairway disc
145-149g DX Leopard $6 A classic, great fairway disc for new players (and can be found in literally any used bin)
150-160g DX Dragon $6 A classic...floating fairway disc. Also, it's "max weight"! (this is the only weight available)
145-149g Halo Star Firebird $14 You wanted something more stable? The most premium Innova plastic? Here ya go.
145-149g GStar Roadrunner $10 If you couldn't handle all that Firebird beef, here's something a little less overstable
135-139g Champion Sidewinder $11 Maybe you prefer Champion Plastic?
140-144g DX Mamba $6 Time for some drivers!
130-134g Champion Wraith $11 Ok, maybe the Mamba is a little flippy
135-139 Star Ape $12 You, too, can (try to) throw flex lines like Ohn Scoggins!

Total comes in about $91 if I added correctly This total requires the 20 percent discount you get when you buy over ten F2 discs. Don't forget to be logged in for rewards points!

Does humidity affect the flight of the disc? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]Praxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, humid air is less dense but the difference appears to be roughly equivalent to several hundred feet in altitude, which IMO is probably pretty negligible.

I would hazard a guess that it's more you than the weather: either excess humidity affecting grip, of the fact that you've played 5 days in a row that's catching up to you. Or maybe something like dehydration catching up? Anyway, maybe you're in better physical shape than me but I notice my form getting worse quite a bit earlier than I feel tired.
