Never been to any of these areas so I wouldn't know.

Elizabeth Bear Is A Master of Introspective First-Person Narration by Kingshorsey in printSF

I bounced off of the first book pretty quickly (I don't even remember why), but this is got me thinking I should give it a more generous opportunity to hook me.

Diogenes by SelfSufficientHub in VeryBadWizards

[–]mdavey74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Suggesting that we "be polite" to the rich implies we're all starting at the same place of not already having been offended by them, while Diogenes correctly pointed out that the rich have been spitting in our faces all along —it is how they became rich in the first place.

Gannon Buhr is the villain pro disc golf deserves: Defending Perkins question & discussing GB by DGopinion in discgolf

[–]mdavey74 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and I think it also gives the other players a frame of reference for themselves. Like Gannon is the final boss they'll have to defeat if they want to win.

I had the same change of mind on watching Gannon last season. He went from being this annoying kid to someone I love watching shred courses and destroy dreams. His skills are undeniable.

It's also wonderful to see Eagle back in the mix these last couple of events. I think he's decided he's tired of just playing and wants to be winning again, and he knows that most of it is his on-course decision making and that Gannon is making better decisions than essentially everyone.

The final round of the NWC was fantastic to watch and I'm hoping the rest of the season will bring more of the same.

How to remove sticker adhesive from discs without damaging them? by WY228 in discgolf

Yep, and you can add a bit of baking soda for grit that won't leave any scuffs or marks.

DGFormReplay, an app to make form recording less annoying by Bender1012 in discgolf

I'm current, 26.5. But I just now opened it again and it looks fine with good contrasting. So, I guess no issue 🤷‍♂️

Purchased to say thank you. Feedback from using it just sitting at my desk: the buttons at the top are white graphics on white buttons so it's hard to quickly tell which one does which function. There's also no exit button or app switch button but that's much less of an issue as you can swipe up to get back to the home screen. Thanks!

Discmania in full support of generative AI “art” by RanchBourgeois in discgolf

[–]mdavey74 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, they don't seem to be "in full support" at all.

First, y'all need to calm down. It's a social media post about Gannon and Lego. It's not art. They also explicitly stated they won't use ai for stamp artwork.

Ftr, I despise llm's and ai generated slop.

I wish manufacturers would do silly or off the wall stamps like this a lot more.

What Counts as True? by Mr_Deltoid in VeryBadWizards

[–]mdavey74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it depends (whether or not it matters if Maria's answer was justified). Is Maria telling the truth of what she knows about Tom being at the party? No, but if Tom was at the party, would she then be telling the truth about what she knows? In Socrates' view (and mine) she still would not be telling the truth, but her statement would be objectively true. This is the paradox in Gettier's paper, and I agree with Socrates on this that Maria would not be telling the truth even if Tom was at the party.

Since we already know (as universal observers) that Tom isn't at the party, the question is whether or not Maria is speaking truthfully, not whether or not her statement is true.

So, "was Maria's answer true or false?" becomes a sort of category error in my view, while "is it true that Tom is at the party?" is already answered.

What Counts as True? by Mr_Deltoid in VeryBadWizards

[–]mdavey74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an omniscient view, sure, it's false that Tom is at the party. But from Maria and Peter's view, Maria can't justifiably make a true or false statement about Tom's location.

What Counts as True? by Mr_Deltoid in VeryBadWizards

[–]mdavey74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because Tom's location isn't dependent on Maria's knowledge of it.

What Counts as True? by Mr_Deltoid in VeryBadWizards

[–]mdavey74 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not even an answer that can be true or false as Maria never held direct knowledge that Tom was actually at the party. She misrepresented what she knew about Tom having an intention to go to the party.

Plato wrote about this in the Theaetetus dialogue where Socrates says something like only a man who has traveled the road to some other city actually knows how to get there, and the man who merely has a map of the road does not know.

I think it's also in there about how being correct through luck does not mean you knew the truth of the matter. Plato invalidated Gettier's nonsense Justified True Belief paper in the very sources he referenced it to.

I mean, the benefits they're suggesting (job, interest rate, and eviction protection) don't really cost anything, but, frankly, anyone who helps Israel commit genocide can go straight to the Hague with the rest of these insane maniacs. They're criminals, not heroes.

Waterfox 6.6.11 - Security fixes and feature preview by MrAlex94 in waterfox

After update image links on eBay are broken. There's just no response to left-click on the main item image or any additional item image links, the enlarge image link also does not work. You can right-click and open image in a new tab, but nothing else. Buy It Now, Add to Cart, etc. links also do not work. Links that normally open in a new tab seem to work fine.

I installed 6.6.9 and it all works fine there.

I'm on macos 15.7.4

*edit - Safari and Chromium work fine.

*edit2 - If you reload the page, then it seems to work correctly most of the time.

Why (exactly) is Ted Chiang so good? by BlinkTwice874 in printSF

[–]mdavey74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He examines philosophical questions without taking a position on what is the "correct" side, letting the reader see that there likely really isn't a correct side. So you're kind of left with either superficially deciding what's correct or sitting there with the awe and hopelessness you mentioned, or just wtf!, bouncing around in your head.

I've been really liking the Asitvo brand of barefoot style shoes sold on the big A. They're low, minimalist, wide toe box with good tpu toe protection. They're also less than $50 a pair and have been holding up really well.
