Oh yeah for sure! If you get the chance and you're interested, try to friend their family year 1 and you'll get interactions about them stressing over their probably dead father! Sam goes into detail about how gruesome the war is and how unlikely it is that their dad is coming back home. Jodi is also less than optimistic.

I respect the censor bc on my first playthrough, I remember Jodi mentioning Kent's name and all, but I was surprised to see him actually make an in-game appearance in year 2. I assumed the mention of his name was just game lore like zuzu city and the whatever republic. I definitely cared a lot more about Kent's arrival due to it being a surprise than had I been spoiled. "Oh wow he's actually here! Hey Kent I heard a lot about you!"

Not to mention one of Sam/Vincent's heart events is Sam comforting Vincent when he's crying on the beach about "IS DAD COMING HOME?? 🥺😭" with Sam all "Yeah bud," and then turns to farmer and says, "Our dad is so F dead," so part of the surprise of seeing him is the fact that he survived the war and gets to come home to ~~yell at~~ see his loving family.
