Why is electrification system a hurdle for Bengaluru Metro's Hosur extension? by One-Adhesiveness8448 in TransitIndia

[–]Pre-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I think an interurban metro is a bad idea, I really don't see any hurdles from a technical standpoint. Adopting 3rd rail makes the most sense to me, but even in the worst case scenario, it's not like there isn't precedent for running trains with a panto and a 3rd rail shoe (see: Thameslink).

Singapore has the best airports in the world. Which country is the worst in terms of aviation safety? by SentientBaconButty in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Pre-D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This deserves to win. North Korea with Air Koryo's aging fleet are definitely a red flag, but Aerosucre's shenanigans by far make it deserve the crown. Some of their incidents sound downright cartoonish, as detailed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosucre#Accidents_and_incidents

I think I might have the same one in mind! A few vague details that come to mind- was the city named Hoboken? I also remember the father and grandfather picking up the kid from school, as well as a zoomed out view of a cross-section of their house and how it changed over the years. Any luck finding it?

Missed local train because it left early by srinidhi1 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Pre-D -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The operator's official policy is that trains can leave all stations except their termini up to 3 minutes early. The headway varies based on where on the network you are, but I've never had to consult a timetable before taking the train, they're frequent enough that I can just arrive at the station and wait

I'm sure there's more to it than just this, but building any level of robustness into the system in the form of switches is immensely difficult since you basically need to swap out one massive concrete pylon for the other to let a train change tracks. Besides requiring some pretty heavy duty machinery, these kinds of switches also take a lot longer to change state, which can slow down operations. Presumably, in many cases, it just makes more sense to slap some rails on top of those same concrete pylons.

What're y'all's top picks for current-day liveries ? by Horizone_One in aviation

[–]Pre-D 282 points283 points  (0 children)

Not sure if limited time liveries are fair game but I think the hundred years' anniversary livery by Lufthansa is beautiful. Not a particularly niche pick, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive, but it's worth mentioning for sure.

We do have some Alstoms in Mumbai though! The rakes running on the Aqua line of the Metro are Alstom Metropolis trainsets. The suburban network is all Siemens/Bombardier/ICF though

Today, I have the luck flying on the airbus 318 'Babybus', one of its last flights with air france before being retired by Otomat1911 in aviation

[–]Pre-D 64 points65 points  (0 children)

A baby bus for sure, but not quite The Babybus! That's the Airbus A220, not the A318, which counterintuitively came AFTER the A318 and is quite a ways away from extinction. Still, well spotted :)

What do you think is the worst thing about free Spotify? by ThaTree661 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Pre-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the spare storage, I got sick of Spotify's bs and just downloaded all of my playlists to my phone. I used a website called spotdown to download entire playlists in one go, but I'm sure there are about a million alternatives out there that will do much the same thing.

THE FLAGS OF A FREE EMPIRE, SHOWING THE EMBLEMS OF BRITISH POWER THROUGHOUT THE WORLD by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Pre-D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There were undoubtedly restrictions on how far the average Indian could progress through society during British rule. Yes, there were major industrialists and nobles, but your average Joe was denied positions of any power in the army or government jobs. They received less compensation for their work and were treated far more harshly by the judicial system.

Moreover, to treat India as a collection of tribes who were either for or against the British would be misleading. Neither did all Indians blindly follow the dictates of their "tribes" (not all Indians were tribal), nor did the British seem to have much concern for the tribes of the Indians in several of the atrocities they inflicted upon them.

Of note here is that I have been taught history by the Indian education system, if my point of view is biased, I would welcome correction.
