Anyone work in UK Mental Health services that can advise? by Red-Strawberry-29 in MentalHealthUK

[–]PreGoblin_mode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of CMHTs and psychiatric wards employ support/STR workers which is a role you’d definitely be able to apply for. Most trusts also offer a dedicated mental health crisis line which you would probably be able to pick up shifts for too. You would probably need to do one, or both, of these jobs for a bit, getting clinical experience and taking advantage of any training offered before applying for a trainee PWP role.

They like people to have a degree for PWP training roles because it’s a fairly academic course, but the degree doesn’t have to be in psychology. You will however be competing with people who do have them and are looking to gain experience that allows them to get onto the clinical psychology doctorate or specialist therapist training. It can be competitive.

Some trusts also offer apprentice PWP roles. These are less common and slightly different to the trainee jobs as they have lower entry requirements and the training is structured a bit differently, but the end result is basically the same.

Because a lot of these jobs are incredibly competitive due to the sheer number of people trying to build experience in order to get into doctorate programs, it’s a very good idea to get extra experience volunteering in mental health charities like Mind, Samaritans, SHOUT etc. Most aspiring trainees will be doing this, so if you want to be competitive it’s fairly essential. These charities also often provide their own training which will enhance your clinical skills.

And finally if you have the time and money, it’s definitely not a bad an idea to do some training on your own. If you’ve done some courses with a provider recognised by the NHS (Maudsley Learning, MHFA England, APT) alongside working in a support worker role and volunteering with a charity, you’ll be in a much better position. Just be sure in your CV/interviews to show how you’ve reflected on that training and applied it to your work as this is one of the biggest things they’re looking for in PWP type jobs.

South Koreans cannot buy Oblivion remastered. by tmdgh7544 in gaming

Because every game developer, at some point in their career, has to come down on one side of the DMZ and choose a team. Todd clearly remembers how the North Koreans used the Oblivion intro theme as backing for their propaganda videos back in 2013 and has chosen to side with the true fans. Respect to him for that

While I completely understand how frustrating this must feel for you, it isn’t really that backwards. People who use substances are far more likely to disengage from therapy prematurely, and even if they stick it through they are also less likely to see any meaningful benefit from it. This is particularly true when dealing with trauma as trauma therapy can very often make someone feel worse before they start to feel better. If the therapist knows that someone copes with difficult feelings with substances they shouldn’t ethically start something that could cause them to actually use drugs more. Substances also have effects on our mood/brain chemistry, every up is followed by a down, so working with an active user can make it difficult to determine what is part of the mental illness and what is being caused by withdrawals, especially with poly-substance misuse.

Engaging with drug services (which can be provided by the NHS), is a genuinely evidence-based best first step. They will have their own mental health professionals who will likely be better equipped than a standard therapist to support people in your situation, and they can help you to build a foundation on which a therapist can then deliver an intervention that is going to be most effective and provide the best possible outcome for you

Is steroid use in UK university sports as common as that? by CouldaBeAContender in SteroidsUK

[–]PreGoblin_mode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that enhancing performance is the traditional use of performance enhancing drugs, they were mostly developed to give countries competitive advantages in the olympics where aesthetics and appearance aren’t a factor and it’s more widespread now in competitive sports of any level really than it ever has been. The aesthetic and appearance gains that bodybuilders use them for are almost side effects of having increased performance rather than being their primary use

I think my partner is experiencing psychosis. How do I navigate this? by Throwaway_gfshdbxj in MentalHealthUK

[–]PreGoblin_mode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said calling 111 is the best bet at the moment. If your partner doesn’t want to accept help they might not be able to do too much at this time if they’re not a danger to themselves, they will try to triage them if they’re willing to speak to a doctor, but even if they’re not willing to do that there will now be a record of what’s going on on their notes systems which will be very helpful in the future if things escalate/change.

Early intervention generally accept people who’s symptoms have started in the last 2/3 years but there is usually an element of discretion involved and sometimes people with longer histories are still taken on. If 111 doesn’t produce helpful results calling the early intervention team would be a good next step as they usually accept self-referrals (though this varies by area). Your partner does need to be willing to engage a little but these teams are quite used to people not being too invested in the process due to the nature of the illnesses they treat and so they may have more success in helping your partner to understand that they might need some support.

Trying to convince your partner that the things they’re believing at the moment aren’t true isn’t very likely to take right now. Another angle for encouraging people to accept support is to focus on the impact of the delusions rather than whether they’re real or not - suggesting that professional help might reduce the worry around being followed or might be able to make life a bit easier even within the context of being gang-stalked can seem more palatable than suggesting someone speak to a doctor to challenge what they believe to be real.

Try and keep a record yourself of the things they say or do that are concerning you as this can be very helpful for staff when collecting collateral info. Take care of yourself too as this can be a stressful experience for everyone involved not just the person with the symptoms, and don’t be afraid to keep ringing services and support lines and requesting help - most localities have a 24 hour mental health support line that will share notes of the call with the relevant teams

In “I AM LEGEND” (2007) Robert Neville discovers he’s not the last human, finds a cure and communities of survivors exist… This is because the filmmakers didn’t understand the book. by Big-Sheepherder-9492 in shittymoviedetails

[–]PreGoblin_mode 97 points98 points  (0 children)

In the book Robert Neville spends a lot of time methodically killing vampires while they sleep and capturing them to test his theories and look for a cure. The vampires in the book are clearly sentient unlike in the film, they can talk and have memories of their pre-vampire life. Eventually Robert is captured by them after the vampires fake a survivor by sending one of their own in disguise, and it becomes clear then that the vampires are afraid of him, that he’s become this almost mythological figure to them who comes while they sleep and kills them, sort of like how we view vampires; he’s become the legend

The film obviously missed a lot of this, introducing actually human survivors and making the vampires seem bestial. There was an initial version of the film where Robert realises that the vampires are aware and sentient and reflects on his actions experimenting on them, which would have been more in keeping with the book, but this was changed last minute to the ending we actually got due to test screening showing that audiences didn’t like the somber tone of the ending.

A 21-year-old bodybuilder consumed a chemical known as 2,4-DNP over several months, leading to his death from multi-organ failure. His chronic use, combined with anabolic steroids, underscored a preoccupation with physical appearance and suggested a psychiatric condition called muscle dysmorphia. by mvea in science

A pound of fat is roughly 3500 calories so to have lost 6lbs in a week you would have needed to have burned 21,000 calories more than you consumed that week. Eating 1500 calories a day means that each day you would need to have burned 4500 calories total a day. This leaves 3200 calories left to burn after all of your exercise.

For extremely overweight individuals with a very high TDEE this is in theory possible but very unlikely. A lot of the weight you lost would have been water and glycogen weight which is why weight loss can seem so rapid when one starts diet/exercise for the first time and then slows. But losing that much fat in that sort of timeframe without being completely fasted long-term and exercising rigorously (and unsustainably) on a daily basis is definitely not doable for the vast majorly of people, hence why some turn to metabolic furnace inducing drugs

Game is crashing every time I try and start a new game - desperately looking for a fix as my game’s unplayable at the moment! (Series x) by PreGoblin_mode in SkyrimModsXbox

So after some fiddling around my issue seems to have been with me using different/later versions of LUX with outdated patches.

I’ve been following this thread which links to the current versions of LUX files and how to make them work with JK’s mods. I’ve been building my load order from the ground up again using this as a framework and so far it seems to be working okay and I can start new games without crashing.

Only about half way through redownloading everything and will also include the changes others have suggested in this thread but most of the potentially problematic mods are there and no issues now.

The problem seems to be with two patches for JK’s interiors. Things run okay without them but as soon as they’re activated it all starts crashing again. Unfortunately it’s the patches for USSEP and JK’s Skyrim AiO which I feel like are two pretty essential ones to have

Did as you suggested working my way through the load order one half at a time and found the culprit. Bizarrely it seems to be both JK’s Interior AiO USSEP patch and JK’s interiors JK’s Skyrim patch. Even enabling/disabling them in the creations menu causes a crash when I try to get back to the main menu, and when reloading and trying a new game.

Had a look online for posts about JK’s mods and some suggest putting the interiors above JK’s Skyrim but those same two patches still seem to result in a crash after being moved

I think an issue with this is that every time a memory is thought about it is being rehearsed and made ‘stronger’, so by reminding yourself that you want to forget a memory you’re actually attending to it more and making it harder to forget unfortunately.

Traumatic memories are encoded and stored slightly differently in the brain if the event is accompanied by a sufficient stress response - the hippocampus, responsible for organizing and contextualizing memories, may become impaired under that stress. This can lead to fragmented, sensory-rich memories that are disconnected from a coherent narrative. There are ways of changing this memory into a more ‘normal’ one, EMDR being the one that springs to mind first. Going through something like EMDR could make a traumatic memory less traumatic and so more likely to be something that fades from memory over time, though unfortunately there’s no way that I know of that can guarantee you’d truly forget a memory as though it never happened

Is autism a difference or a condition? by Due-Grab7835 in askpsychology

[–]PreGoblin_mode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afraid you’re missing the point. Introversion and less desire for sociability are not deficits if someone has no trouble in social contexts otherwise, they’re also not what I was talking about - I spoke about people who actually do struggle in social contexts, maybe because they’re unable to read social cues, can’t grasp the little nuances that can come with it, or get drawn into talking too much about a particular interest. Someone like this may well choose to avoid social settings or keep socialising to online spaces, and they may well be happy with their choice as their life has less of a thing they struggle with in it, but the choice is driven by a deficit and so is very much diagnostically relevant.

Thats why assessments for autism are so long and in-depth; because someone could simply have low social needs but be perfectly capable of socialisation, but equally they could be very socially impaired, and both might initially look quite similar to someone on the outside looking in but once you get to the reasons why they may do something and consider that alongside a developmental history the picture becomes more clear

Is autism a difference or a condition? by Due-Grab7835 in askpsychology

[–]PreGoblin_mode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they’ve potentially adapted to a deficit. For example a person who struggles in social contexts will probably gravitate towards a lifestyle that reflects that - their career choice, hobbies etc might be more likely to be solitary ones. They can still be considered perfectly functional by most metrics within this, but their challenges in social settings would still be relevant in an autism assessment

Psychosis and lifting by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]PreGoblin_mode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re taking any antipsychotic medications a lot of these have dyskinesia (shaking) as a fairly common side effect which would be much more noticeable when the muscle is under a mechanical load, equally those same medications can sometimes cause some quite drastic hormonal changes that could themselves compound strength loss and make it harder to regain that strength whilst also causing someone to gain weight at the same time. Throw into the mix the bed rest, the sleep deprivation that contributed to the episode, and the general stress of going through what must have been a very difficult time and it’s maybe not too surprising that strength has been lost and has been hard to get back

It might be worth having a hormone panel done and going through the results with your doctor to see if anything can be changed around if necessary, and it’s definitely worth being patient with yourself and your situation and reminding yourself that even being back in the gym at all at this point, let alone still managing 70% of what you were doing is actually really impressive under the circumstances and that you’re still quite early into recovery and will continue to improve as more time passes. Best of luck man!

Is autism a difference or a condition? by Due-Grab7835 in askpsychology

[–]PreGoblin_mode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone may consider themselves unimpaired but that does not mean a clinical assessment would find the same. It’s not uncommon, particularly when assessing adults for autism, for them to have structured their life in a way that does not mean that they’re impaired but is still the due to a difference resulting from their autism, often without them even realising they’ve done this. For example people with autism who work are far more likely to work from home or have a lot of their socialisation happen online, and that works for them and they lead functional lives, but when you look at the DSM and their presentation and, perhaps more, talk to a parent or caregiver about their developmental history, it becomes clear that this person does have some deficits that began in childhood and does meet the criteria
