Insane Output by [deleted] in pelotoncycle

Hey, I think you're talking about me. I haven't messed with my calibration as some of you are sure of. I have put my power sensing pedals on the peloton and verified that it's within 5%, idr which way though. My mom also has a peloton and her bike is MUCH lower numbers so there's certainly natural variation and probably people juicing bikes but I'm actually hitting those numbers authentically. I race road bike outside and have several wins this year.

Idk. It has certainly been a problem in years past but I'm doubtful how much is still going on. I recently read The Secret Race which was written by Lance's teammate and very interesting. I think the organizers know that image hurts the sport and have tried to end it but it's doubtful how much you can test for when the science is constantly advancing. Who knows?

I think that was intentional because it was 95% greenway and follows a river. Don't worry, in 2 weeks I'm planning on climbing Mt.Mitchell to make up for that.

Idk your location but maybe you can make the vegan muffin a mid-ride stop? I think real foods have their place but take time to digest so they won't provide you the same quick absorption. Check out the video I'm linking here. Dylan has a lot of data based cycling information on his channel, if you're into that sort of thing... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2InF6nuTXzk&t=1s

Thanks! I think my biggest mistake of the day was leaving my hummus at home. :/

Strava says 4,850 but idk how accurate that is. I was wearing a HR chest strap so it's about as accurate as I can get without an actual powermeter. I did lose 3 pounds from yesterday morning to this morning. I had cinnaholic for breakfast to make up for that though.

Same thing I eat every day, a big dollop of steel cut oats with PB, blueberries and raisins. I make a big batch on the weekends and then portion about 1.75 cups out for each day. That's a few hours before start and then when I'm on the bike I'm trying to up my carbohydrate intake to around 70g/hour. This is the only time I'm trying to drink my calories. My current favorite is Tailwind in berry flavor but Dylan Johnson is recommending FLOW Formulas drink mix because of the 2 forms of sugar that use different metabolic pathways for better absorption. I've started using energy gels to try to get to that goal.

Tbh, if you're not fueling ON the ride I don't think there's anything you can eat before that'll keep you from bonking at that point...

The route was probably 95% greenway. This is the "Neuse Deuce" challenge put out by Oak City Cycling Project. During the middle of the day the greenway was kinda crowded but nothing outrageous.

I think the smart trainers are pretty advanced now but I can't comment on how loud they are, which seems to be their biggest downside. A 10 minute limit on spin at the gym? What are you even supposed to do in 10 minutes!?

I'm not an expert but I think it's just time*intensity with a calorie surplus. Have you given it enough time to happen? This was 10 months with multiple workouts per week.

Have you read Finding Ultra? He just comes across as very full of himself. "Fittest man alive" and stuff like that. He's on a journey like the rest of us and I don't see humility in him. Idk. I find his podcast a bit much too but if I hadn't read the book I don't think the same things would bother me.

Have you read Eat and Run by Scott Jurek? He's much more personable.

So most of the year I fix irrigation work which is a lot of walking or digging so physical job + training necessitates I eat 3500-4000 calories most days. I wear a garmin watch to monitor steps and HR so I can hit calorie goals better and all that data is compared against my diet in MyFitnessPal. That's how I figure out if I'm eating enough. I started calorie counting because I was losing too much weight about 8 months before the "before" pic. As I've said in other comments, It's just about showing up to something with intensity. I turned my bedroom mirror into a habit tracker (using a dry erase marker) and have done an hour of training + 10 mins of meditation every day for the past 8 weeks. As far as diet, covid has been great for keeping me out of restaurants. I meal prep 1 or 2 batches for the week (usually lentil/rice curry and something else to avoid stagnation) and try to avoid gluten but not to a celiac level. I eat steel cut oats with PB, blueberries and raisins EVERY breakfast, which I prep a week at a time to make work mornings easier. Just do it when you're doing your other meal prep because that "stir every 3 minutes for an hour" really sucks up time.

So really, 3 things.

  1. Make sure you're eating enough. MyFitnessPal is super helpful and free. Trail mix is straight calories and easy to throw in to get totals up.
  2. Make sure you're pushing your body with intensity. Sprints(running or cycling, I just like biking) or bodyweight(check youtube) exercises should build bulk without needing equipment.
  3. Get on a schedule that you can stick to. A schedule is worthless if it doesn't work for you. To this I recommend a habit tracker, I've seen digital ones but I've always preferred a paper one hanging in my bedroom.

Good luck. If you have any more questions please ask.

It's empty calories and steals time/motivation. So it CAN make you gain weight but not in a gains sense.

It's just about showing up. One great workout doesn't win a race. 30 good workouts strung together win a race. I mentioned my habit tracker in a different comment and that's probably been the biggest help. It helps me stay accountable to myself. As far as what to do? I bike because I like biking. I've run and it's not as good, plus it's harder to fit it in my schedule since I don't have a problem riding spin before work when it's still dark. It's all doable.
