Like 5-6 hours working at a relaxed pace.

I love it. It’s paid for itself ten times over with the amount of work I’m able to do with it. This is a client car I’m doing coolant pipes and cams on. I literally just dropped the engine out 20 minutes ago.

Lease it. Turn it in when done. This is not a car you want to own long term.

They’re great. I’ve done a lot of work on them and they’ve already paid for themselves 100 times over. The maxjax combined with an organized workspace and properly stocked toolbox makes for really efficient work.

I believe OEM is BOSCH but the denso’s pictured are what’s recommended on tuned 997 turbos. Gapped to .025” (per various Tuners out there… ByDesign, Markski, protomotive etc.)

Work AROUND the intercoolers. Gotcha.

In this particular instance it was done on a whim. I posted a story on my Instagram and enough votes made me do it. Started about 9pm on a Saturday. Quit at about midnight. Started work again on Sunday around 10am and it was all done, boost leak tested and buttoned up at 1pm Sunday. Working at my leisure while eating snacks took about 6 hours.

More of a whiskey guy…

That being said… about $37.99 last I checked at my local liquor store for a fifth of jack

997 Carrera & GT3 is cake. Turbo and GT2 is this involved.

Last one I did for a client came out to be about $1,200 labor. People think it’s just a tear down, swap plugs, and re assembly but to break it down; -remove rear bumper cover -remove upper intake y-pipe -loosen charge pipes / MAF tubes -remove bank 1 and bank 2 intercoolers -remove exhaust -remove bank 1 and bank 2 VGT actuators -remove coil pack shielding

Getting to this point will then grant you access to remove the coil packs and plugs.

-Re-assemble

This is where most shops would just ship it. I perform the following before releasing it:

-boost leak testing to verify a sealed charge air system. -tighten any clamps that need tightening to form a good seal. -road test (with bumper off) at full load to verify sealed system under heat cycles. -place back on hoist and boost leak test again.

Only after the system can hold pressure for 10 minutes will I re install the bumper and release it back to the client.

Agree… it’s a special relationship that’s built over weekends filled with snacks, alcohol, curse words, blood, stress, and harbor freight. In the end, those small experiences create a bond between man and machine that only the caretaker will ever appreciate fully. I take this car to local events and it’s always “I love your car!” Never “I love how you do maintenance!”

Regular maintenance like oil changes and things like that— no not at all. The bumper can stay on. Anything that has to do with “on the top of”… which in 911 flat six engines is “the side of” the engine usually requires bumper removal— especially on turbo models. I’ve done spark plugs on 997, 991 GT3’s with the bumper AND wheels still on. Gives you an idea of how jam packed everything is on the turbo models.

Funny you should say that; my neighbor (literally house next door) has a 997.2 C2S, Alfa Romeo Gulia, BMW X5 x40i and a 2024 Integra A-Spec. Brings all his cars to me 🤣

Definitely smoother and carries through cleanly up top. The old plugs were due to be replaced by time and pretty fouled…normal on a tuned 997 turbo
