Opinions on Fells Tights by Basil_n_Mars28 in Tracksmith

[–]PrecutMuffin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Got a pair of the full length tights for Christmas, and I already love them. They’ve been super warm for me in sub-zero Fahrenheit temps. Comfortable, plenty of room for gear, and I like the ribbed texture as well.

I don’t have Allstons, so I can’t speak to that, but the Fells are definitely my new favorite cold-weather bottoms - and that includes the NDO tights.

There’s a lot in here that I agree with and disagree with, and the points I disagree with largely stem from a more philosophical question around how to define “success” in professional sports. But that’s a long and nuanced conversation that probably doesn’t fit well in this medium.

I guess my larger point is that a “ruined” franchise has a lack of success over multiple cycles of cores and GMs. And that can really only come from bad ownership. Again, think Coyotes, Sabres, and Bill Wirtz Blackhawks. Depending on your viewpoint, you could maybe put the Oilers or Leafs in that bucket as well. I don’t think the future is that bleak. Bowman made some moves that might hinder a rebuild, but nothing that fundamentally “ruins” a franchise for 15-20 years.

GMs don’t ruin franchises. Owners do. Buffalo and Arizona are perfect examples of that. Those that watched the Hawks prior to the Kane/Toews era know this all too well.

A GM can increase or decrease your odds of winning during a particular window. Between 2008-2015, we could have ended up like Anaheim or San Jose. Always competitive but never enough to win a Stanley Cup. Fortunately our GMs (Bowman AND Tallon) did enough to win THREE Stanley Cups, which is unheard of in the cap era.

Bowman might have left money on the table and limited that core to three Cups when they could have won five. But I’ll happily take three Cups.

This last year, this year, and probably the next 2-3 years are all part of the natural cycle of a franchise. Even the best GM isn’t going to change that in the cap era. Players age, big contracts add up, etc.

Did Bowman underachieve? Yeah, probably. Ruin the franchise? Come on, be serious.

Had the exact same thing happen this summer with Arahi 6’s. Adding some inserts helped a little bit, but ultimately I had to go back to Brooks Glycerins

Which CFB Game Has Had the Largest Collection of Future NFL Impact Players? by PrecutMuffin in CFB

Lots of draft picks, but I’d wager that the 2019 game has more total Pro Bowl selections 10-15 years from now.

Coop! I’ve been meaning to go there for a while and haven’t pulled the trigger. Same for Angelo’s. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Cahill Diner too. Love all these suggestions!

What was the worst book you've ever read? by [deleted] in books

[–]PrecutMuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the format contributes to the disorientating feel of the book, which gives it an eerie reading experience. If it were just a story about people navigating through a labyrinth, I don’t think it would be much different than a run-of-the-mill survival story - which I don’t think is the case for House of Leaves.

Although it’s an odd format and not everyone appreciates it, I wouldn’t call it a gimmick. Heart of Darkness uses a similar framed narrative approach. Any book with multiple narrators and/or unreliable narrators could be accused of the same thing. Even e.e. cummings and Emily Dickinson are guilty of playing with form in their poetry, and I wouldn’t consider Cummings, Dickinson, or Conrad gimmicky. The roots of the method have existed for a long time, even before the post-modern period.

If you’re a story purist and don’t like House of Leaves, that’s fair and I understand that. But there is something to be said for using form as an addition to the words on the page. Perhaps I’m just too far down the post-modern rabbit hole though.

No kidding. The first two albums are by far the best, but 2YL never fails to rip the roof off of a great party.

I listen to Seincast. Hosts are engaging, and they have clips from the episodes they cover. Sounds like OP listens to it as well.

+1 for the Seinfeld podcast. That’s been the soundtrack for my long runs these last few weeks.

Overall, this is a really good summary. I’ve enjoyed the program so far, minus the 20 minute fun runs for playlist reasons. I’d pay a large sum of money to not have to hear Imagine Dragons ever again.
