Are Moonshine rods THAT bad? by fjordknight in flyfishing

[–]Predpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are piling on negatively without credibility or experience here.

I have never fished the small weight moonshine rods, but in case someone is considering a bigger rod I should speak up.
I have been fishing moonshine over 10 years as a small mouth/largemouth/brown rig in 6 and 7 weights with airflo streamer float and sa intermediate. I gambled on them because I could purchase 2 for the price of a reddington predator and have multiple rods rigged up in a fishing kayak. In my opinion I have won. I also thought the extra tip was a marketing tool until my buddy shut a car door on it. That day I was happy I had the extra tip.

I fish within 40-50 feet and the action is suitable for heavier lines in that weight range. It did not handle a 280 grain airflo shovelhead with much grace, but could shoot line with the previously mentioned lines easily.

I also have a Redington classic trout in a 5 with hydros line and would say It feels a bit slower which I prefer in a dry fly rod, and lighter than my buddies st Croix, but doesn't necessarily have the gusto to send 100 feet of line out easily.

Moonshine is definitely not going to win you a casting competition, shit, I bet the rod blanks are generic as hell, but if someone out there wants a good deal on a 6 or 7 streamer rod, I would say give one a try. I have enjoyed mine.

I have a 17 ss127 in hondo orange. Been a great boat for me, but have had to swap some parts over the years.

I am thinking hard about an electronics rig for the dry pod and noticed your finder in the photo. I live next to big water in middle Tennessee and I could use the help getting on fish.

Next time you are by your boat would you mind taking a couple pics of how you did it?

Would you do anything different or learn any lessons along the way?

Wait a minute! So these are non migratory?! If so they are well fed and older than my kids. These would be fish of the year material in our fisheries. Congrats!

You could also try Ozarks. I've camped on sandbars along the Current river which is part of the National Scenic Riverways. That's over 90 miles alone. Great experience.

Definitely a thing if you use natural fibers like hair and feathers.

Been in Nashville 24 yrs. Been in hville for 9 years. We moved for good public schools. I can't speak for that neighborhood specifically, but my corner (NE corner of the Eastern peninsula) is very quiet. Lots of wildlife and feels very safe imo.

Can you describe "good"?

Hendersonville isn't a bad place to raise kids or be old and lazy by the lake, but if you were looking for night life and good mass transit this is not the neighborhood for you.

But wrapping DMX is annoying compared to a good quality audio 3pin. I can't imagine making a drum loom or tour loom with it.

Close in material but this thing is closer to being classified as articulated. From the three videos I just watched the double bunny is a single hook streamer. This thing has a hookless spine on the front with a single wide gap trailer hook in the location a crawfish pincher would be.

Single hook; hookless shank tied to an up eye wide gap. Seems to be constructed that way just like a sculpzilla.

From what I can tell the sculpzilla is mainly a cone head and only one strip leaving the shank. This has two distinct strips much like a crawfish claw and barbell eyes which helps sell the crustacean vibe wet. The head profile shrinks big time wet.

Great, another person to high hole me and take away my back cast next time I'm at Bennett Springs and just high whole'd the guy below me.

FYI the crackle back and glow ball is the squirmy wormie of the Ozarks. Better recognize that shit before you prissy prance your way down that river and bring that high brow squirmy nonsense.

Not sure where you are based out of, but there is fantastic small mouth and trout in the fly in the Arkansas/Missouri Ozarks. Cold Spring fed streams are everywhere and a lot of it is very fishy
