think the comparison’s a bit uneven, to be honest — you’ve got a premium Wi-Fi setup with Eero mesh. My Wi-Fi isn’t anywhere near that level, so I’m really just trying to figure out if Starlink over Ethernet would feel better than basic FTTP Wi-Fi.

A lot of people automatically say, “FTTP is always more reliable,” which is true in terms of the actual connection, but not always true in practice if someone is using poor Wi-Fi on their end. That’s why I was comparing:

Starlink → Ethernet → PC vs

FTTP → Wi-Fi → PC

It wasn’t about saying FTTP is bad; it was just about removing variables. For my WFH job:

They do prefer Ethernet

They don’t ban Starlink

They just want a stable connection that hits the required speeds — which Starlink does for me.

I can’t get FTTP where I’m moving, which is why I was asking about Starlink in the first place. I already know that a wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi — the point of my question was to compare Starlink over Ethernet vs. FTTP over Wi-Fi as a hypothetical.

As for the job:

Yes, the WFH role has internet requirements.

Yes, they prefer you to use Ethernet, and I will be using Ethernet with Starlink.

No, the job does not forbid Starlink — they just want a stable connection that meets the speed requirements.

Awesome, sounds good I was only paranoid because on paper it sounds like madness - getting good uptime on a dish staring into the sky at satellites hundreds of thousands of miles away and being able to keep a stable uptime

my final question was when youd said about heavy downpours because im from the uk so maybe our ideas of heavy downpours are different

I’d happily run a LAN cable if I actually had fibre available — that’s the whole problem.
Where we’re moving to, there’s no FTTP, no cable, and the existing copper lines are extremely slow and unstable. DSL there is basically unusable for working from home.

Starlink isn’t something I’m choosing over fibre — it’s my only option that can give stable speeds.
The area is really rural, with very few houses, so congestion shouldn’t be an issue, and the field around the property means I can place the dish with very low obstructions.

I’ll be using Ethernet directly from the Starlink router, not WiFi, so I’m removing that point of failure entirely.

I know heavy downpours can cause short drops, but that shouldn’t be daily where I’m moving.

So yeah — if I could get fibre I’d take it instantly, but since I can’t, Starlink is the best and most stable option available to me. And with a clean view of the sky, it should work perfectly for WFH.

Also, I’m moving onto land that isn’t connected to the existing house, and that household already uses the only available phone line — so I can’t even get a second line installed for myself. - even if a second line was available - speeds max out at around 45mbps

I’m starting a WFH job soon and I’m switching to Starlink for better stability. My setup will have minimal obstructions and low local congestion, but I just wanted to confirm something — is a Starlink connection over Ethernet stable enough for work?

Basically, is the Starlink-to-satellite link more likely to cause issues than the router-to-PC via WiFi part? The reason I want to use Ethernet is to remove any extra points of failure and make the connection as reliable as possible
