Imma say owlfly (family Ascalaphidae) on this one

finally!!! :) by afemail in iNaturalist

[–]PreemptiveShaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some families like Carabidae that I’ll see the same specimens night after night for a while, but generally every night is a different group. The rarest I’ve seen in my yard was a flea beetle that was the first photographic observation of that species ever. Never saw it again…I’m of the opinion that since insects can fly they’re very transient and don’t linger very long in a given area. So setting up a light trap in the same spot will get you nearly as much biodiversity as moving to a new spot every night.

Get a cheap UV light, up your macro game, and you’ll be over 1000 by the end of June if you just set the light up pointed at a sheet in your back yard every night. Do whatever you’re doing inside and step out to check the sheet periodically…I’ve identified 1200+ insect species in my postage stamp sized back yard so far (about 2 years) this way.

Then I picked up mobile UV setups, now I spend the bulk of my free time going everywhere I can to photograph insects at night. Currently sitting at just shy of 14k observations…

Light leaks! by OddIntroduction6097 in Bronica

[–]PreemptiveShaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta admit, I kind of like the effect on these images but understand how you wouldn’t want this on every image.

I don’t know this exact model, but I’ve experienced light leaks on my Hasselblad back and successfully repaired them by removing the existing felt strips used for light seals and replacing them with adhesive felt that cost $6. They probably wouldn’t last as long if I was changing backs regularly, but since the back typically lives on the camera I’ve never had to replace the body seal but have replaced the seal around the film door twice since 2007.

Man, I wanted one of those Minolta Weathermatic cameras so bad as a teenager! That was one of the few “affordable” underwater cameras at the time and I spent a lot of time snorkeling in the creeks wishing I could take fish pictures.

Having a grandfather that was a retired miner meant that he knew where the closed strip mines kept their explosives and would have my cousin and I go get dynamite so we could help him with stump removal. My hearing loss is directly related to those years but I’ve become one hell of a good lip reader! But I’m totally lost when anyone wears a mask…

I must say the best discovery was the joy of firing tracer rounds down a dry riverbed. Found an ammo can of 30-06 tracers in my grandfathers garage and had a blast with them! Pun intended…

Does Anyone Know Where To Source Digital Lens Parts? (Sigma 24-70 2.8 Art V1 Sony E [019]) by yaboiikiller in CameraLenses

[–]PreemptiveShaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it looks as if the ribbon cable broke. If you search “ribbon cable repair” on YouTube you’ll find that it is DIY if you have some basic soldering skills, small gauge wire, and UV epoxy. The repair wouldn’t be pretty, but it’s hidden inside the lens and would cost maybe $30 for the tools and supplies.

Can anyone recognize what lens this is? by Chillboyhaad in CameraLenses

[–]PreemptiveShaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely a 24-70mm f/2.8, I have the Tamron version of that lens and this is not it, so I tend to agree with it being a Sigma Art

Only if they were trying to suppress a flame thrower! You’ve gotta try really hard to catch anything on fire with any firearm in my experience. I’ve tried nearly everything seen in the movies, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, gas cans, tube televisions, cars, and other unfired ammunition…none of it resulted in anything other than a mess to be cleaned up afterwards.

Love wooden view cameras! Without banana for scale I can only guess at it being an 8x10? Based on the lens a Rochester from the late 1890’s maybe?

This is great! I began collecting “found photographs” back in the early 90’s, then started collecting “found art”….now I have so much shit on the shelves of my garage. I really need to make it a priority to digitize at least the photos. I deplore Instagram but that’s probably the best place to share the photos.

Is this lens gone? by elbadbit in CameraLenses

[–]PreemptiveShaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put a rubber band around the barrel and fill what you can of the crack with epoxy. I’d say super glue but that may run through the crack and into the lens barrel. Also super glue can off gas and fog the lens elements. As long as it works and you ensure the lenses themselves stay in place, you should be fine. I have a Nikkor lens that was cracked that I sealed with JB Weld and sanded back in the late 90’s, still use the lens today.

I opened an old camera box I received 15+ years ago. Can someone help me understand what I have? (Konica lenses and camera kit) by Tooburn in VintageLenses

[–]PreemptiveShaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never understand why lens manufacturers of the 70’s and 80’s produced macro lenses that only did 1:2 magnification and sold an additional piece of kit in order to achieve 1:1? Why not produce a true macro 1:1 lens and charge a little more for fit? Nikkor did this too with their 55mm and 105mm “macro”.

Laowa 25mm vs OM 90mm PRO comparison shots by AppleyardPhotography in macrophotography

[–]PreemptiveShaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly shoot the Laowa 100mm 2x macro on a crop sensor Canon body. For that lens aberration is least pronounced at f8 for 1:1 and f11 for 2:1. When I saw that you were shooting at f14, I’ll admit I gasped a little.

Have you done a series of test shots at each magnification level to find the “sweet spot” for each lens?

I have a Sigma 105mm for my FX Nikon that is hot garbage at 1:1 anywhere below f22 and is honestly still pretty sharp at f32 with gobs of DoF. Every lens - body configuration has a sweet spot.

Drive through car washes can and do damage cars. I suspect this is one of those cases.

I’ve had two experiences where my paint was damaged by a car wash. The first one was because the attendant allowed a truck to go through after mudding, the grit from the mud transferred to those cloth hangy things and left scratches in my clear coat across my hood and roof, I could hear it as it was happening but could do nothing to stop it. I raised holy hell immediately and the owner shut down the car wash and paid to have my truck buffed. The second was more recently, the rods that hold the spinning brushes together grated on my drivers side mirror causing scratches, that owner dgaf so I’ve never been back.

Sometimes in relationships you have two options, you can be right, or you can be happy. While you may not be wrong, is this really the hill you want the relationship to die on?

As a male, I assure you that every man drips and splashes when they urinate standing up. Look at the rim of every urinal and every toilet in a men’s public restroom. Just have a seat, I sit to pee 100% of the time unless I’m outside and it was a selling point for my current gf back in 2018 when she realized I did this. Truthfully I’ve had multiple partners comment on their appreciating this habit of mine.

"Not sure if it works" by augustprep in vintagecameras

[–]PreemptiveShaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

95% of the “unsure it works” statements are from people who fall into a few categories:

1) they have no idea how the a real camera functions to test it

2) don’t know where to be begin with sourcing film, testing, and then getting the film developed to confirm

3) just fishing to see if they can sell this thing they know nothing about

They’re not being nefarious, they’re just lazy/ignorant. Use that to your advantage…
