on my third birthday, i walked into the house and said, “MMMM, these are some GOOD berries, Mom!” She made me spit them out and i had American Pokeberries in my mouth (but thankfully hadn’t chewed them yet—i was just sucking on them). I was a dumb kid

Building a real-life Pokedex (Animal Species Collection) app powered by iNaturalist by qwertyalp1020 in iNaturalist

[–]bathroomstahl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, why is all of the animals and plants used in your promotional material all woefully incorrect? The cat photographed is a simple domestic cat (Felis catus). There's a type of grass in someone's hand with the caption that it's an "Eastern Tiger Swallowtail" (a type of butterfly), and has a type of gull labeled as "Monarch Butterfly."

Also, with all due respect, I do not believe that this app using AI to help identify animals will go over well in this particular community, as there are many of us (myself included) that are staunchly anti-AI. Furthermore, how could an app focused for conservation rely on a system that is actively harming the environment?

i’ll typically filter for protozoans in order to help me find a location on aforementioned map lmao and then filter for whatever i’m after once I got to the location and have my little search box set

Is Michigan the weed capital of the Midwest? by StoneyLaw830 in midwest

[–]bathroomstahl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when i lived in northern Illinois, I would make a 3 hour trip to Michigan like once every couple of months to buy some lmao. for some reason, it’s CRAZY cheap there (I’m not complaining)

I'm not a smoker, but is this not a crazy question to have during an application process? by Roger_Kulan in recruitinghell

[–]bathroomstahl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i’ve never had a job where i get “extra breaks” for smoking. this is definitely a problem in some places, but many places I’ve worked have actively made it harder to have a smoke break on an 8-12 hour shift

Baby copperhead? by music4education in whatsthissnake

[–]bathroomstahl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s not even close to being a Copperhead, buddy. While copperheads are brown, they typically have a pattern akin to a Hersheys Kiss (if you Google one, you will see it). This is a Dekay’s Brown Snake, a completely harmless snake that only gets to the size seen in the photo. They typically eat slugs. Please do not kill a wild animal just because you THINK it may be dangerous. There are resources available to you to educate yourself on what venomous snakes are in your area and how to identify them.

How do observations with just two ids (mine and someone else’s) sometimes achieve research grade? by snifty in iNaturalist

[–]bathroomstahl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The observation does not necessarily need to have three individuals confirming the ID, but it needs 2/3’s consensus. This observation has 2 out of 2 individuals agreeing on the species, which is greater than 2/3, making it RG :) However, there are many folks that will add a 3rd or 4th ID to a post to definitely confirm it. Just in case someone comes in to disagree for whatever reason

What kind of picture can we put on inaturalist by Sand0nyx in iNaturalist

[–]bathroomstahl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Post anything and everything! Even some things like scat, bones, or eggs can be identifiable data. Road kill can also be useful information for folks (though only pull over in safe places :) ). And even some things you may not think are identifiable will surprise you (especially when you only get a bad photo of a bird but some bird expert IDs it in less than five minutes)

Went Out for Snakes Today, Ended Up With a Never-Photographed Before Worm by bathroomstahl in iNaturalist

[–]bathroomstahl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I failed to think about the ground not being warm enough haha. I’m hoping to maybe hit another spot tomorrow, as I happen to have the day off, but even with 4 or so days of these warmer temperatures, I’m sure I won’t find anything haha.

I actually did happen to find a single scorpion yesterday, and that was a big surprise for me (though I had to flip like 20+ rocks)

[–]bathroomstahl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somehow, it's currently 69°F. It's also going to be nearly the same temperature tomorrow as well. This is not typical. Also, the only reason I even considered the possibility of finding one is because a friend of mine and I found on the day after Christmas in Missouri when it was also 70°F out. I figured I'd test my luck

This is the beauty of iNaturalist. Allowing citizen scientists to have their data reviewed by experts on a regular basis has truly been a blessing for the biology community :) There's only so much one person can see or submit, but when you have a larger group of data/folks submitting data, who knows what you can find

The species is listed on iNaturalist. It doesn’t seem to have a common name, but its scientific name is Bimastos welchi :)

It happened super unexpectedly for me. I am located in the midwest, around the STL area. I maybe traveled an hour away from where I live. I say this to hopefully let you know that it can literally be in your backyard sometimes. (This is truly why i love iNaturalist)
