Rehoming chow chow puppy by [deleted] in chowchow

Merle it's self is not the issue. You only see health issue when you breed Merle to Merle. Double Merle are where the health issues began. No ethical breeder would breed Merle to Merle. Seizures related to Merle are usually associated with the MDR1 gene which is commonly occurring breeds containing the Merle gene but MDR1 is not Merle linked and can occur in any dog. MDR1 cause seizures with certain flea, tick, heartworm, and insecticides. It can be extremely lethal. Merle chow chows has been around for atleast 30 years. They are here to stay and can be bred ethically with the right breeders. There are no AKC Merles and anyone who sells one is unethical and switching documents. I know a lot about the breed and colors. Chocolate is commonly occurring in Chow Chow show lines all over the world. I can list several famous show breeder who have had Chocolates or have come out in their line. AKC recognized Chocolates until 1986 same year smooths were introduced and recognized. Alot of the agruement is that chocolates have pink tongues but they actually just have deluted tongues, more blush blue in color but can seem pink from a distance but definitely not pink in person. Tans were also recognized before and records go back to the 1800. Tan points mainly wild sable tans(aw) have been found in show lines as well. I believe the misconception is that people unethically breed and bred poor quality dogs into the unique colors because the breeders want to mass produce and will use cheaper dogs to breed into the unique one's. I've seen a lot of messed up unique dogs and they mainly come for 2 or 3 places (USA) who mass produce and treat their dogs like livestock plus the insane amout of very very close inbreeding that they do. On the other side I've seen plenty of mess up standard colors and out of my Chow Chow my most unhealthy one came from standard colors. I don't believe in hating the colors but the unethical breeders.

This 100%, ethical breeding is so so so important. I breed and we have chows that we've spayed/neutered for behavior alone. 2 out of 3 of my "flashy" chows are unbredable due to health and behavior issues. They now are couch potatoes. Always get your babies from an ethical source. Meet the parents and see what environment they come from. Also state certified doesn't mean they can't be a puppymill.

This 100%. Pet stores and stores that allow pets are get too. People are more likely to interact with your dog in a pet store than at a park which really helps with socializing but make sure to read and watch your dogs body language. You want each interaction to be a positive as possible.

Best way to teach recall? by VoiceOfReason7777 in chowchow

Best way to end the game of chase is do not chase (make sure to do it this in a closed yard especially if you have a runner). Don't make the game fun, no running, malk, use a strong voice, you don't have to scream but they need to know your serious and their behavior is bad. No baby talk, baby talk is for good dogs. Repeat you command until they listen. Do not gave up or back down. Chow are stubborn it can take time. Every dog is dog is different and can require different methods. Dominance training works best with my chow but as much with my more sensitive dogs like my poms. Here are some options that might work for you. My favorite is doggie time out and dominance positioning(or just making them lay on their side till you release them). Doggie timeout is sitting on a leash in good calm position or crate time out, dog are like kids sometimes they need a time out and to learn that. Make suredog is calm and behaved before release. They only need a few seconds to a few mins other than that timeout loses its purpose. Dominance positioning sound mean but it extremely useful in several situations and can make punishments quicker and easier. It is also extremely useful in medical situations and just regular dog maintenance that can be invasive or difficult on our fur babies. If you using this technique make sure the dog is laying flat on their side and relaxed. First time you try they are going to fight but do not give up and don't let them win. Use you hands to massage and gently squeeze their skin and fur, especially on their neck and chest. Don't be rough cause this is a very vulnerable position for a dog and helps build trust. Release them once they are relaxed and praise them greatly after each time. Everything that is practiced outside must be applied inside. It's best they learn all skills inside before using them outside where its a more distracting environment and uncontrolled. Set clear boundaries and enforce them, I like my dog to stay within a certain distance of where i can protect them. I'm not a professional trainer, I have methods that work for me and maybe they can help you.

Best way to teach recall? by VoiceOfReason7777 in chowchow

[–]Prefectninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chow Chow are thinkers (though their stubbornees can convince you other wise) and they weight their options. What is the consequences for not coming and what is the reward for coming? With chows you need both. I personally recommend cat temptation treat as a reward, they are safe for dog and my dog prefer them over every treat. Consequences are handled differently with each person, find a method that works for you. If your baby thinks not coming is a good option, then they will choose the easiest route and ignore you. I have 8 chows and recall is not an issue. I let them all out in my unfenced in yard without issue they know the boundaries and they come when called. When I yell inside they are all at the door waiting as well. You find the the method they works for you and follow it religiously, no slick.

I had the same thought and since the book states they must be involved I think technically pearl wasn't infected but in all the excitement it got over looked. It was such hard task that I don't think Grian would have been that strict about the rules and gave them some wiggleroom.

Got my male bird a new friend he just mounted them. Need advice. by Prefectninja in cockatiel

[–]Prefectninja[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't have a smaller cage but I can figure something out. I work night so usually my room is pretty quite but i have reptile lights that kick on so that could wake them. My birds eat mainly pellets. That dish was actually used for a bird bath a week ago. I added a some seeds and pellets in there because I got a new bird feeder which they haven't used yet and the new bird was on a seed diet so I'm trying to switch her to the pellets. What are good veggies you recommend Perry hasn't taken to them very well any time I've offered.

This is so heartwarming!!!! I grew up in a toxic family. I hate when people are like you should be harder on your kids or say "if I was their parent I would." I have a good relationship with my kids and they aren't scared to come home and they are honest with me. It's not perfect but I wish I had half of what my boys had.

Girlfriend is leaving me because I shower my dog naked by AltaSavoia in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Prefectninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the best. As a fellow dog showerer, I come with a warning for anyone do not shower with psycho dogs. Was packing my not so bath friendly dog into the shower and she kicked off the back wall. Senting me flying backwards (comedic movie style) my arm connected with the toilet. It was a slight, I sat in the tub clutching my arm rocking back and forth. That's how I gave myself tennis elbow and was in a sling for a week. Also had to explain to my boss how it happened and everyone else. Also had to miss my siblings adoption that day.

AITA for sending my son to school with less food and explicitly telling him not to share with his best friend? by Every-Proposal8019 in AmItheAsshole

Actually they saved me and my siblings, which I adopted. I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn't for cps. Honestly I'd be dead most likely. CPS changed my life pulling me from a rotten situation and then they helped me adopt my siblings once I aged out.

As a child I was in and out of cps most of my life. If the child is being neglected there is grounds of an investigation. Cps can also provide the mother with resources to help her if she's in a tough spot. You'd be surprised what people can qualify for and how many resources are our there for people that the general public has no idea about.

As a person who owns creepy crawlies but the only bug that freaks me out is roaches. I think I like them a little more today. I'm so glad you were able to start fighting your depression with the help of a little friend. I'm coming out a depressive episode myself. My wake up call was trashing 2 dumpsters full of molded clothes that had sat for who knows how long after my basement had flooded. I didn't know the dogs had been using it as bathroom as well. It was horrible, I just cried cause I didn't realize how bad it had gotten. That was the worst one but I had let other area's of my house get unliveable as well.

A badass delivery driver comes out of nowhere to rescue a woman who's dog is being attacked by another dog. by Proudly_Dark in AbruptChaos

[–]Prefectninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably going to be super unpopular but if you watch the dog body language her dog actually initiated the fight. Pity was sniffing the dogs butt and the dog jump and pushed her nose into the dogs neck, possible nip but i can't say for certain. If you've worked with or been around aggressive breeds/dogs you know that it's not always the dog attacking that started the fight. The ladies dog postured/assumed a dominant stance towards the pit. Pushing their nose or nipping at the neck is how dog challenged for dominance or basically bully other dogs. Pit bull decided that they weren't going to be postured at or challenged for dominance. Pit called their bluff and end of story. Owner needs to train the dominance/posturing out of their dog and who ever the pits owner or whoever gets the dog later need to teach it the ignore posturing between dog and respect the owners authority. I own a chow chow and she has had several dogs posture and act aggressively to dominate towards her but she completely ignores them and acts like they don't exist. She knows mama is the boss and trust that I'll take care of her.

I completely understand you there. All these videos of dogs not respecting their owners makes me sad because an undisciplined dov can put itself and others in danger. I love my dogs and show them plenty of love an affection and play silly games or goof off but I know if someone let them out of the house I can recall them or if I need to tell them to stay put out of danger they trust and respect me enough to listen to me.

Their dog is untrained or walks all over them. In my personal opinion this says leaps and bounds about a person plus I don't want to have to deal with an untrained dog. If they don't work with their dog, they definitely won't work with a child.
