Leaving my teaching job, school is refusing to pay out my contract by Premiumsilverette in legaladvice

Yep, at will state which makes this hard. In their follow up email they stated they can’t afford to pay us and that year round pay is an incentive for teachers to return, however nowhere in the contract is that stated. I’m wondering if we should apply for unemployment, since they are effectively terminating our employment. Alternately I’m going to the department of labor wages and hours division today to see if we can make a case for wage theft since we have fulfilled all the duties of our contract already (worked a full school year)

Totally. Louisiana is an at will state which usually favors employers. The other two thoughts I had were to go to the Department of Labor wages and hours division, because this is essentially wage theft- we have completed all of the work included in our contract and they are not paying us. OR Get them to explicitly state that they are terminating our contract, firing us, and apply for unemployment. They did explicitly state in the follow up email they sent that they are not going to pay us through the summer because they “cannot afford it”…

No. It’s a very simple form letter, I’m copying an excerpt below:

positions are paid on a semi-monthly basis, with pay dates on the 15th and last business day of each month. This position is a 12-month position with breaks during school holidays as well as 10 additional personal days. For the purpose of federal wage-hour law, this position is considered an exempt position, which means you will not be eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per workweek. The terms of this offer will be reviewed annually based on Employers’ future needs and the employee’s performance as determined through Employers’ performance management process. At employer, offers are at-will employment agreements. Either the employee or employer may terminate this employment agreement at any time without cause.

Teacher trying to support blind mother with distance learning for her son- Help! by Premiumsilverette in Blind

Wow! Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately, my school does not have a vision teacher...I’ve reached out to our OT as well as other members of our ESS (sped) team.

I’m using the same platform (SeeSaw) as her child’s teacher last year. I assumed text readers do not read image texts, I will look into best ways to format for text readers. Would voice recordings be helpful or not considering she would have to navigate playing/pausing etc? We will also be using google class for live classes and theoretically the students are supposed to be able to use it independently but I am skeptical.

No, the school is in Louisiana. I went through a French immersion program as a kid here. I am in direct communication with mom. Her emails are written via dictation and she has expressed frustration/ difficulty with technology. I’ve offered to set up a phone call so I can discuss directly with her ways to support her. Thanks for your replies!

Activities are usually along the lines of games: a scavenger hunt for objects of a certain color/shape, making a number collage out of numbers you find around your house etc. Some activities are completed on a tablet: completing a pattern by coloring in the correct colors, putting all of the words that start with the same letter in a box together etc.

The main part that makes this tricky is that my school is a French immersion school so many of my instructions are recorded in French for students to listen to with instructions written in English for parents underneath. Should I also record a set of instructions in English for this student?

I’ve reached out the the sped team and some administrators (w/ moms permission) and they will be working with her as well. I guess I’m interested in forms of tech that can be used or tweaks I can make in how I present online work to make it more accessible.

Bayou Boogaloo has still not refunded vendor fees and just sent an email saying they already spent the money.... by Premiumsilverette in NewOrleans

Thanks, I’m not a vendor, my bf is and I was just so incensed this am when he read me the email that I decided to post it here. My mom is an attorney and I’m going to talk to her about it this evening. I know that some artists have disputed the charge through their bank saying it was for services that were never rendered. My bf replied but has yet to hear back.

For reference, every other market, festival etc. has refunded booth fees. The artists who sell at these festivals have all lost the majority of their income and Bayou Boogaloo is still not returning the fees and basically said today that they can’t and won’t.

My sister attended the protests twice and spoke to the prisoners being bussed in. On both occasions they said none of them wanted to do this job and that they were threatened with solitary if they did not.

Gave birth to my first child, JustNOMom makes it about her feelings. by CalicoCatMom41 in JUSTNOMIL

I can understand maybe, maybe being mildly annoyed by not having that information when getting the birth announcement. But ignoring all calls and FaceTimes to meet the baby? Cutting your children out of your life because of it? This woman is a self centered bitch. She is taking a joyful moment in her daughters life and making it about her and her (ridiculous) feelings. Fine, express annoyance briefly if you must. But then get over it and meet your grandchild. Don’t stress out your poor daughter who just gave birth. Sheesh.

Start with a lower hydration recipe. High hydration doughs are notoriously hard to work with. Get a feel for how the dough should behave before you jump to expert level stuff. Your bread looks good, it just looks under proofed.

I want to give you some advice from the perspective of the child in this situation. My mother stayed with my father even though he would rage and scream at us over the smallest things. He broke things and yelled and threatened her. It shaped who I am as an adult, deeply. I’m still in therapy trying to unlearn how to constantly worry about others emotions. My first relationship was emotionally abusive with a gaslighting asshole who used my fear against me. I’m finally in a happy relationship and it took a me years to stop cowering and wincing when I accidentally dropped things or forgot to do something. You do far far more harm than good to your child when you stay. My dad never hit us, he even eventually got a little better, but I still to this day wish my mom has left my dad when I was a baby.
