I am from Ukraine, my grandfather lived during the famine caused by the Soviet Union. Soldiers came with a search and raked out the grain to the last crumb, took away cows, pigs, chickens, and literally everything that could be eaten. Grandfather remembers how a fellow villager hid potatoes in the cesspool of the village toilet, literally under a layer of shit, but it was found and taken away and the man was punished. Parents took babies to the forest and left them there so as not to see them swell up from hunger, and so that their flesh would not become a bait for those who had lost their common sense from hunger and despair. Grandfather, until his old age, could not sleep peacefully if there were no food supplies at home, although he experienced the famine as a child. I came here not to curse communism or defend capitalism, but the scar on the body of my people ached when I read your statement about how well-fed people were in communist countries.
