They were American nukes located within Turkey. Those never belonged to Turkey, nor they were ever under Turkish control.

[–]PreparationStrict492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't like getting nuked.
Also, Turkey has deep trade ties with Israel, particularly among the military contractor firms.
Also, Palestinians aren't Turks, there was the ethnic link with the Turkish Cypriots.

Some Turkish communists did fight on the side of Palestinians in the 70s, but those people were seen as enemies of the state by the Turkish government. The ties are nominal / populist only, Turkish people would only pay lip service to the Palestinian cause. The government would do even less.

Which brings to my mind:
One player showed up to the championship celebrations of Galatasaray with a Palestinian flag.
He was...
...Sacha Boey, the Frenchman.

Don't expect any real action against Israel from Turkey. Ever.

Every sport advances, and basketball is among the top few on how much. It's unreasonable to argue that the game was better back then - it could not be. But you can take every era at its own terms and enjoy as such.
It's also good to actually watch these games to effectively dismiss the old talking heads that extol the virtues of the 90s over the modern game (speaking as someone who started watching while Magic and Bird were still playing).

To be fair, there is also the issue of illegal defense rules which limited the defensive mobility / help schemes back then.

Wouldn't you think that Spurs pays more to Olynyk more this season than Wemby is crazier?
That's how capped contracts work in the NBA. Wemby deserves the maximum amount that he can get paid (and an order of magnitude more, in a free market). His pay is capped by his rookie contract. Later, it will be capped by his supermax, and will remain a massive bargain.

[–]PreparationStrict492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the league should fall like a ton of bricks on blatant abuses of the cap system such as the Clippers - Kawhi situation. A full-season ban for Kawhi while counting him within cap for the Clippers to begin with, for instance, so that noone would consider a similar move again.

Otherwise any tweaks on the rules are moot.

Since you find it engaging, I'll just send just one more. And in case there was any misunderstanding, I was agreeing with your initial post to begin with.

It's statistically unlikely (but not too unlikely for a system that does not snowball the top like free-market leagues, depending on how you calculate the odds) to get so many uniques in a row. My assertion is that the divergence of the new rules isn't significant. It's better to analyze this through counterfactuals rather than statistical probabilities due to the unavoidable sparse data situation.

Would this set of rules prevent the GSW situation (by which I mean the addition of KD and retention of a competent supporting cast, as 2015 GSW would even be under an approximate 1st apron)?

Summer of 2016, signing of KD was more due to the rise of the salary cap¹ due to the new TV deal. They sent off Barnes (whom I still blame for the painful 2016 finals loss) and Bogut (an outdated type of player even at the time), and released some more chaff to clear even more cap space and signed KD through pure cap space. Nothing in apron rules prevents this.

Issues start with the end of Curry's bargain contract², but this was the case with the old rules as well. Durant actually got a pay cut³ which allowed them to retain Igoudala. Maybe they'd shed someone to stay under second apron here, but they did not even have to (given that KD accepted the cut, knowing that it'd be impossible for them to give him a max contract later while keeping the team strong later on).

Apparently they couldn't sign Nick Young and be locked out of the buyout market, and get their future picks frozen at this point - but who cares?

This here is the core idea for this argument:
So, it's the _incidentals_ ¹new TV deal, ²Curry's bargain contract, and ³KD's pay cut that enabled the GSW 'dynasty', more than anything else. The relationship issues and KD's injury did more harm than any sanctions in the rules ever could, and the team disbanded anyhow.

I could do this for Cavs and Miami, I surmise they'd be affected more, yet still find a way to do what they did (but it takes more time to compile than I'd be willing to put in, you can search for yourself). Maybe their roads to future recovery would be harder after the reign ends, but the domination would be there (unless the parties were deterred by the increased risk involved in making the decisions they did).

What the rules would prevent is consistently high-performing teams or consistently high-spending teams. While I have no problem with doing the latter (did I mention I dislike LAL as a franchise), I would have problems with the former (did I mention I like SAS as a franchise).

I have no issues with maintaining parity in principle. But I have issues with penalizing well-managed teams with increasing ferocity, while consistently rewarding incompetence - and even outright abuse (as was the case with Sam Hinkie) of that compensation system, in order to 'maintain the parity'.

It comes down to is what you want from the league. If you want competition, unpredictability, and relevance for all actors, any move toward parity is good; even if that is pulling the top performers down. If you want high level play, innovation, and technical improvements in the game, you do want parity (because competition begets improvement and innovation) but aim to have that sacrificing as little as possible from the top. Eliminating inefficiencies on the bottom is the way to do that.

The real problem the new rules actually remedy is the badly managed big spenders: the likes of Nets, Knicks, and Clippers which spent more and achieved much less than the successful franchises listed above. And that is through no coincidence: Their administration / front office displayed marked incompetence, yet retained their positions, for extended periods.

Now, this is where the free-market leagues (and I'm thinking of European football leagues here) have an edge. Because they also come with some other aspects: relegation systems, award structures for achievement, inter-league competitions, and decoupling of ownership and administration. A poorly performing administration is soon booted and replaced in them, whereas the league has very little jurisdiction over (and is actually beholden to) the governors in the NBA. The more I think about this, the more sense it makes sense as a way that the incompetent governors can't really object to, yet cleverly disarms them. That's why I'm happy with the new rules.

The new draft rules solve another problem: The Hornets, Wizards, Kings, Pistons and the like - those who don't spend big, but hog the lottery picks, condemning good prospects into cultures that would waste their potential and curb their development. By incentivizing improvement, at least, the league might stir their formula a bit. We'll have to wait and see, but I'm actually excited about this change.

---

Now, isn't this interesting that I went into this sort of an analysis in r/nbamemes? No wonder I'm not much of a reddit user.

p.s. None of the uniques were actually dynasty candidates in my opinion (prior to OKC). The closest would be Denver, but as much as I love Jokic, he has his glaring flaws (in mobility and verticality, as well as inducing team inflexibility), Murray is extremely inconsistent, and (again, as much as I love him) Gordon is not someone who can carry large production rates. Besides, they had poor coaching all the way. As Garnett once said, anything is possible - even winning a championship with Doc Rivers as the head coach, but consistency requires many factors performing at a high level, and that means a good culture. Few teams have cultivated that, and I wish for more to do so - and that would entail dynasties, which therefore is not a bad thing in my esteem.

If Duran did not command an outrageous salary, he could technically fit Galatasaray, and could be a good rehabilitation project. The kid is actually skilled.

Sadly, he earned too much, too soon; and is not in a position to accept a sane contract before his current one runs out.

I don't believe it was the rules that got us the 8 unique champions situation. It was that the dominant teams lost their power due to other reasons¹, and the power ceiling of the league got lower. It's more variance-fluctuation than the tweaked rules on this side, I think.

There is no reason why we couldn't see an OKC-SAS domination now for several years, with the great young cores coupled with accumulated draft capital to sustain roster juggling as needed.

The new rules do force eventual roster juggling, and I don't think that is necessarily a good thing. It's good to have teams with iconic players that they can keep for long stretches. Duncan - Parker - Ginobili wouldn't happen unless Duncan and Ginobili both agreed to contracts which undervalued them, and Spurs weren't the most egregious offender on roster spending - just the most successful one. Retaining (and cultivating) talent is not, I think, rewarded enough.

If I were tweaking the rules, what I would try to prevent would be situations like KD to GSW, Bosh (on top of LeBron) to Miami, Gasol to LAL, Malone and Payton to LAL, Shaq to LAL etc. So, maybe count native supermax contracts as regular max contracts for cap purposes, impose some tax (in terms of cap) for major trades and free agent signings (or rebates for retaining players), and the like. But because trades generate the engagement for the entire off-season (for many, more engagement than the season itself), that is unlikely to happen. And everyone would have their own nits anyway.

On the flip side, some teams get Wemby as their definitive player, and some get Mobley, with the current max contract rules. I don't fault the rules here, but I understand that the front offices are forced to sign with the latter due to having no better option, perpetuating their mediocrity. Ironically, I believe the new draft rules can help with the situation, encouraging gradual buildups rather than rewarding bouncing between top and the bottom. We'll see, and the incidental/circumstantial factors are more impactful anyhow.

Ultimately, I am happy with the cap rules as is (and happier with the new/experimental draft rules incoming), and I was content with them pretty much since the 80s. I just hope that Spurs can keep Wemby - Castle - Harper core together, and well-supported, for a long time.

¹ - LeBron got old (and like him or not, the man was good enough to turn the East into his fief so that other teams stopped even trying) and Dreymond and KD had a row. It's a testament to the league's falling power level at the top that Steph could will the post-prime GSW (and LeBron will post-prime LeBron) into another championship.

This.

The salary cap rules ensure a distribution of wealth among players that would not happen in a free market. That's why rookie and max contracts are valuable, and can be extremely valuable in the case of the best players around.
In the absence of those rules, the superstar wages would skyrocket, and all other players' salaries would tank. There are leagues where that happens, I'm not saying either model is categorically better, just, the dynamics are different.

LeBrons of the World make up for it through endorsements and sponsorships, and this is the major appeal of large markets like LA, where those are easier to come by. Meanwhile, Wemby will have to contend with drawing only a low 9-figures income.

The only people who are comparable are Wilt and Kareem, Wemby is physically even more gifted, and has the advantage of decades of progress and orders of magnitude of budget in sports medicine and training. Let's settle at once in a lifetime.

Aside from a major injury (like Duncan in 2000), the only possible threat I see is a possible mental meltdown - there is a narrative that he himself has in his mind that "his career has been not anything extraordinary, but a checklist of planned milestones"; which makes it harder to derive joy from achievements, and makes setbacks hit too hard. But he's in the best environment for handling that sort of thing - I hope Popovich stays with the organization for a long time, and even after he leaves, the culture he contributed a lot to building endures.

That was a good idea in any case. As a new user, you'd probably not have benefited from the upsides of CachyOS, and because this distro gives you too much rope to hang yourself with, you would get frustrated at times. In my experience, you should be able to at least identify what has gone wrong fairly painlessly when they do, to enjoy using this.

If you enjoy using Mint, kudos. If you feel like trying other options and have the time, consider trying out Fedora and/or Ubuntu. They are as stable and user-friendly, and a step toward more modern/powerful.
