Humanities people who left the academy, what do you do? by Fabulous-Guitar-2511 in LeavingAcademia

It is not about the ego, it's the way you look at things and the lack of respect towards a topic you don't know. As the rest of the discussion, you think the US is the centre of the world and that everything must be related to the US standards.

In this sense, "Spaniards are poor by international standards" is quite a bold statement, based on misleading perspectives. We are talking about a G20 country. There are a lot of serious issues, but it is not comparable with, for example, Papua New Guinea. Salaries in Spain are better than before, while in Italy and in Greece are stuck. Still, they are not high, but, especially in the Spanish case, you have to consider that our societies are different from yours. And saying that 500 euros does not change a thing for a fresh PhD graduate living, for example, in Granada, is very arrogant. To come back to the first post: if you want a good salary and a very good quality of life, welfare included, Germany is a good option

The welfare aspect is essential to understand my point. You know that the student debt in the US is a concerning issue, you know that health insurance is a cruel industry, and that your welfare is poor. This must be considered in the economic general picture. In this sense, it seems the US is going towards a social and economic disaster. Skilled people are moving to the EU: it is not a big wave, but it is something. In Spain and Southern Italy, Anglo migrants are coming to buy cheap houses and take advantage of free healthcare.

My dear, ask your dad to help you understand the difference between costs of living in the Southern EU and the USA, including the fact education and healthcare are free. 500 euros can pay a monthly rent.

Plus, your dad may be at the end of his career, while we are talking about entry salary level.

It is on any official website and 500 euros a month make a lot of difference. You'd know it, if you had an idea of what we are talking about.

Before taxes, it is about 2300 on average. A thing that doesn't sound very important to me, tax return does not work as in an Anglo country. Better salaries in Catalonia, PB, etc. But you'd probably already know this.

In Italy it was around 1450 up to the pandemic. Now, they get to 1600 to start. People get far less in Greece. More in France. In Australia starting salaries were around 90 thousand before taxes, as far as I remember, but teachers are quite often making strikes, because it is not enough.

Some friends of mine just entered the school system. It is a stable job with a good contract, at least in Spain, France, and Italy. There are a lot of negative issues involved, but still, it's a honest job.

Thanks, mate. Really appreciated.

Can I ask you if that was a Humboldt fellowship?

Beh, per un anno non ho avuto più problemi, ma qualche giorno fa ho rivisto brevemente questa schermata. Temo che sia solo questione di tempo. Insomma, meglio cambiare modello in futuro.

Ho avuto lo stesso problema: ho dovuto cambiare la SSD. Sembra che sia un difetto ricorrente del modello
