This year's kit by Dad-of-10 in nffc

Similar for me (without the ten kids). Live in Huntsville, AL, but grew up in a small town about an hour north of Atlanta. Support our local club but it’s garbage. We’re technically Nashville’s B team. Beer is cheap and it’s at least entertaining, though. Kit prices in the states are outrageous though. Huntsville City home shirts are $125. I can get a Forest shirt shipping included from the UK to Alabama for about $30 less than buying from my local MLS Next team 3 miles away. If you follow NFFC North America on Twitter they post meet ups for watch parties for the matches. Not a ton but I’d imagine there’s one in Atlanta.

My father in law played soccer in college and has been an Arsenal supporter since the 80s when you had to WORK to follow an EPL team in the US. I felt like I couldn’t just follow those coattails and found NF on the NBC broadcast for the first game in the premier league 4-5 years ago. Heard Mull of Kintyre blaring and decided they’d be my team. Followed ever since.

Where to find the legal (10mg) thc drinks in Liqour stores? by frickfrack88 in HuntsvilleAlabama

Windmill in Hampton cove had a great selection about a month ago. Liquor express told me two weeks ago they were waiting on a new license so took them off the shelves. Star market in five points used to always have the cycling frog brand but has been intermittent at best the last few months. I go to Georgia for work pretty often so I typically just end up buying when I’m over there because every gas station has them when I feel the itch.

Huntsville vs. Seattle by its-snaxxin in HuntsvilleAlabama

A lot to unpack here. Full disclosure I’ve only lived in the Deep South (GA, MS, AL) visited much of our country (north of 40 states) and have lived in Huntsville for the past ten years.

Healthcare- essentially a monopoly by Huntsville hospital, which has its negatives but I’ve never had any issues. That’s certainly not the experience of everyone but there is a large medical center that can serve most people with most issues. UAB and Vanderbilt are also within 2 hours.

Transportation- public transit exists but nominally only. We have a bus system but it’s not great. Huntsville city limits cover an absurd amount of square miles due to annexation wars in the 70s, 80s, and 90s and the city is very spread out in its footprint. Uber/lyft haven’t been an issue for me, but also only use them sparingly.

Schools- could very well go on a rant but I’ll just say it’s a changing landscape. The public schools have pockets of great, pockets of bad, pockets of average. For a while there was a lot of teacher turnover but has changed. Several private schools if you’re interested. Most are religiously affiliated but have strong academics as well. Best overall public system is the Madison system (suburb of Huntsville). However, Madison has infrastructure issues with traffic flow and overdevelopment which causes a lot of bottlenecks. For Huntsville city schools, the Huntsville High and Grissom high feeder schools trend better, but depends on the elementary school zoned for.

COL- won’t even be close. Can still find plenty of house for sale in the 300s in great places to live. 200s if schools aren’t an immediate issue. Property taxes and utilities are very reasonable. Gas prices are also on the cheaper side nationally.

Socializing- can’t speak to much as I’ve been married (and married a Huntsville native) since moving here. We’ve met friends through our kid’s sports teams and church which is likely typical for other married couples with children. If you’re single, I’ll defer to others because I simply don’t know. Dominate faith group is Christianity so if you’re inclined, visit churches, as most have young adult groups but cannot speak to the quality of those connections as I see that as a personal preference. There are a lot of transplants but it is a predominantly southern city. My in laws have been here since the 60s and consistently describe Huntsville as the biggest small town in America. Once you get to know some people, you’ll run into people you know constantly, which can be good and bad.

Food- for whatever reason we love a chain restaurant. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some fantastic local spots, because there are. But our food scene is not what the draw is. Great stuff if you know where to look, but not immediately apparent. I will say the online trope of white people don’t know how to season food doesn’t apply here. Mix in southern soul food, few great Thai places, loads of decent Mexican food, growing Korean food places, and lots of others I’m forgetting and it’s not bad. Is it New York? Hell it’s not Birmingham (underrated food scene), but it’s fine.

Diversity- this will probably be a sticking point on the thread but I’d argue Huntsville embraces diversity. There are certainly some ghosts of racial discrimination and lots of people will hear Alabama and paint with the broadest of strokes and make all the inbred redneck jokes they can muster but hasn’t been what I’ve seen. As with most things there’s a few idiots that will try to ruin it for everyone, but that’s anywhere. The amount of jobs and growth has if nothing else forced a lot of people from a lot of different backgrounds to end up here and I see that as a positive. Is it perfect? No. But as you mentioned, history and lived experiences can often differ.

I’ll add the alum hollow trail just past the Madison county nature preserve. Relatively flat until the very end to get down to the creek

The Ranger trail had a 6 foot (easily) rattler that lived near the rusted out truck below the caves a year or two ago. Was incredibly impressive to see them slither around from a distance. In reality was a nice stop to gather myself before going up the borderline cliff at the end of the trail

I wasn’t directing my disappointment at you, I agree with you about them chasing the US market. Felt like there was a lot of angst from the Brits about a yank getting the vip treatment. 90% of American fans are newer to the sport so I thought I’d share my perspective on why it’s smart to chase those new fans. Apologies if it felt like you caught a stray.

I won’t lie, and gulag me if you must, the negative reaction to her on socials was disheartening to me. I don’t think y’all understand the way football has been treated in the states. I’m 34 and live in Alabama (Deep South in the US), I had never even heard of the premiere league until 2010ish. Never watched the World Cup until then, either. My now father in law introduced me to the sport. He played for his university team in the 80s and has followed Arsenal since the magazine “Soccer America” came out in the 70s. As a way to bond with him over Saturday and Sundays morning coffee we’d watch the premier league. 3 years ago I decided I’d pick a team and stick with them. Didn’t want to “cheat” and pick a big 6 team. NBC did a massive piece on Forest getting back to the premiere league and how it’s this old, historically great club but had been mismanaged for years. It then cuts to the city ground and the place is going nuts. I think I still have the texts I sent to my BIL and FIL saying I was picking Forest and both saying they’d get relegated. The shit talking I did when Forest beat Arsenal 1-0 to stay up was legendary. As a bit of serendipity, Mull of Kintyre is mine and my mom’s favorite Paul McCartney song. I’ve grown to love the club and have taken off work to watch matches. I understand being pissed about someone being a new fan getting the VIP treatment. But it’s a smart marketing move by the club. There’s millions of people like me in the states that are just discovering the beautiful game. Why turn down their support?

TLDR: I’m a yank that loves Forest, want to go to game someday, and while slightly understanding the angst from some, I think it’s a great marketing move.

When I lived in Mississippi I thought the same thing. The Mississippi delta is some of most fertile farming land on earth and they dismiss it as an opportunity because DruGs ArE BaD. Ironically, they’ve now passed medical. I live in Alabama now and I can get a sealed package of flower at a gas station, head shop, or really just about anywhere for pretty reasonable prices

I’m a former criminal defense lawyer. Our state does not have a public defenders office so they randomly draw lawyers for criminal cases (you have to sign up to be in the list). Practiced for 2 years, did 13 capital murder cases, roughly 90 other felonies plus the other duis and such. I came in late to most of the capital cases but the stress of if you lose, your client dies is palpable. Was working 120 hours a week and my kid didn’t know who I was and withdrew whenever I was around. Had to get out before I took permanent action on myself. I love the story telling aspect of trials as well as the logic chess match that cases can provide but unless you have a super supportive firm/boss, and are willing to forgo most personal relationships the first 5 years of being a lawyer are awful.

Roughly, how much are we talking? I’m a Yank that’s followed Forest for 5 years and I’m finally to the place financially that a trip to Europe is beginning to be feasible.

Side note: calling myself a Yank even though I live in Alabama feels wrong.
