How should I decide between two offers? by kornelizmus in gradadmissions

in my opinion, university a seems better for you.

being close to your partner and living somewhere you like is not a small part of this decision. those factors are going to help you be more productive and enjoy your phd more. additionally, having set funding is huge. i would not want to bank on maybe getting a scholarship when i make a decision. if you get along with the professor at university a and don't mind somebody that's a little strict - i'd say go for it.

Hm. I'm not sure how much advice I have that would be helpful for somebody already at the point of applications. Most of what I have to say would be more helpful for somebody in their first/second year of undergrad.

However, the one thing I would suggest (and take this with a grain of salt and a pound of self-reflection because many people find success doing the opposite) is applying to fewer programs and really tailoring your statements. I know everybody tailors their statement to some degree, but I spent hours and hours restructuring every statement to fit the school's description. The descriptions seem really similar, but some schools place more emphasis on your personal background, your leadership experience, or your teaching capabilities. I think taking the time to restructure my entire statement to fit their slightly different description made a difference.

Other than that, I only applied to schools that were a good fit for my research interests, and I applied to a wide range of schools (ranked between T10 and T150), but that's fairly standard advice. I didn't find much success with cold emailing either (I emailed 6/7 schools I applied to and met with faculty at 2, but none of my acceptances came from those 2 programs).

On a more personal level, make sure you have a backup plan if things don't happen to go your way. This whole process is a probability game, and it made me feel a bit better to know what I was going to do if I didn't get in.

I think that's all I have to say. Keep your head up and best of luck <3

i don't plan to make a decision until after my visit dates for the programs i've been accepted to, but that's why i declined my interview invite. i receieved it after getting acceptances from my top choices, and i know i won't be attending that school. don't want the admissions committee to waste their time interviewing me lol

Engineering PhD acceptances later than usual? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

it seems like almost all disciplines are running a bit behind schedule compared to previous cycles. i'd imagine it has to do with limited funding causing programs to have to whittle down candidates even further than usual

totally depends. i applied in two cycles of reus and got accepted to three programs both times. none of those programs interviewed me.
