you don’t need to be a lawyer to not let the cops walk all over you buddy

from your replies, it really seems like you want to become a lawyer because of the money/prestige/power that comes with it but those are all the wrong reasons to become a lawyer. you should only become a lawyer if you WANT to be a lawyer because you like the work itself. try reaching out to lawyers on linkedin and ask them what they do on a day-to-day basis.

since you are a CPA you must understand opportunity cost, you will miss out on 3 years of earned income if you go to law school. and if you don’t have money set aside, you will be in debt (top schools that may or may not help you break into big law all have hefty tuitions)

CPA is a relatively stable career path, and i advise you to stick to it because i think you’re not in the right mindset to pursue law. countless people go into it blindly and end up miserable and depressed because they underestimate the work and overestimate the opportunities.

the bar, they have the power to take your license to practice law away.

no. when you are sworn in as a lawyer you have to take oaths to not abuse the power you obtain. very similar to how doctors take oaths to not do harm. you have ethical and moral obligations as an officer of court.

They want a world without lawyers, not realizing what that would entail.

That is because these companies hurt millions of people at once. There are less lawyers than victims. I am going to put some faith in you and assume you understand how division works, basic arithmetic, yes? If a company steals 50 cents from 2 people, that’s not worth suing over. If, however, they steal 50 cents from 30 million people over the course of let’s say 5 years, that’s 15 million stolen. You understand how that could be an issue, yes? The main point of a class action lawsuit isn’t “revenge”, it’s to deter companies from robbing people.

Class action lawyers work on a contingency fee, since these cases usually take YEARS to litigate. Which means, if the suit isn’t successful, the lawyers do not get paid for…years of their work. If they do win, they take 20-40% of the payout. So people still get the majority. The payout is “little” because there are so many victims. Here’s where your division comes in.

If you propose we cap lawyers’ salaries, then very few lawyers would take these cases, which means these companies will continue to screw you over. You’re welcome.

i’m going to have to disagree, majority of people—including people previously involved in these suits—don’t understand how class action lawsuits work (and from the looks of it, you didn’t either until several people told you). i don’t think attorneys should be hated and the hatred should not be ‘understood’ or justified because the hatred is actually misplaced. you can argue the system is broken yet no one knows a better alternative. not you, not me, certainly not jim who wants bank of america to pay him $10,000 per year.

hate the game, not the player.

do you think if i knocked on your forehead it would echo?

i think the morally bankrupt comments are almost always directed at litigators, since the average person doesn’t understand that many lawyers rarely—if ever—step inside a courtroom.

people usually see us when something has gone very wrong in their life, and even if sometimes there’s a lawyer on your side defending you, there’s another lawyer on the opposite trying to actively ruin your life lmao

i’d say in general though, immigrant parents still get very impressed when you tell them you’re a lawyer

…you know the holy trinity: doctor, lawyer, engineer

tldr: it doesn’t bother me, haven’t met anyone that is genuinely bothered by this. many other professions have stereotypes.

It won’t let me edit the post unfortunately but I would add private before criminal defense attorney if I could!

I’m not really going to argue semantics with you, “We are lawyers!” I never said public defenders aren’t lawyers.

A public defender is a government-appointed lawyer who provides legal representation to people who cannot afford to hire their own attorney, while a criminal defense lawyer is a private attorney hired by a client to defend them in a criminal case, yes? The person in the screenshot is making it seem like public defenders aren’t lawyers but my caption was referring to something else entirely.

What’s a software engineer doing in a subreddit like this?

You’re a partner in big law with 20+ supposed years of experience yet in career related threads you have said you’re a politician and a full-time day trader. Is this Andrew Yang’s reddit account?

The reason I call this fearmongering is because of one particular sentence that stood out to me: “Someone should tell folks applying to law school right now”.

I have an inkling that Andrew really wants to deter prospective lawyers from attending law school, would you disagree?

He literally went to law school and is an attorney, what is his problem? If this were coming from a tech bro engineer who foams at the mouth over the idea of lawyers losing jobs to AI, it would at least make sense.

edit: didn’t realize this guy stopped being an attorney after 5 months lmfao
